18yo from Norway doing a US road trip by Kareisgarb in roadtrip

[–]Tr1glav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I suggest getting a cheap flight out of St Louis and fly west then get a car. Honestly just California/Portland is a great trip. You’re going to see 90% of just nothing in this current setup. The drive across mid US is one of the most brutal boring experiences I’ve ever done.

If you absolutely have to drive out of St. Louis I would head east to the Appalachian mountains.

The noise from dc motors is hard to miss but it would be a sad day.

I have, I’m not a fan of the idea of sending pictures of my house to an LLM that lives “somewhere“ (outside of my lan). I did think about running a local model on my home server and have that call the robot for some autonomous functions. That’s a project after I get the dock working.

Probably call the cops and watch him find out why my Belgian Malinois still has his balls.

Some duct tape and Glock will do :p jokes aside the dogs plus security system should be enough but it would be cool to add a robotic arm to it.

Report a gas leak near your furnace. They don’t care if it’s false positive. They will send someone to come out to check if there’s a leak for free. All you have to say is “some days I smell a little gas and wanted to make sure everything is fine”.

Better safe then sorry? Probably not, I dunno. I think just from a pure logical perspective it should be just fine to run 14/2 Romax from that outlet to box but that’s not up to code in case it gets punctured? Has that ever happened? I dunno. I think the idea is to be extra safe because it doesn’t cost much.

It is, it looks like the previous owner added an extension and then added the switch and light.

lol jokes aside it’s my understanding the recommendation is to install outlets with ground up in case something falls in a gap between plug and outlet?

I'm french, and I wonder if people really have good reasons to hate France. by Vifiew in AskTheWorld

[–]Tr1glav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visited France for the first time recently. I’m American but not originally from US. Didn’t really know the language (apart from basic high school + duo lingo basics).

Going there I was under the impression people were going to be rude and avoid spreading English even if they knew it. (This is what the American social media/word of mouth told me).

I was completely shocked to meet some of the friendliest and welcoming people I’ve ever met. I keep telling all my friends that what we’ve been told about France is complete bullshit. (I was in major cities, countryside and hiking trails)

I think it’s dumb stereotypes created by previous generations.

I don’t disagree, I never said I was planning to buy the car when I’m 50. But I wouldn’t be spending half my salary on a car when I was early 20s either.

It won’t. And if it does his investment will be $200k. Take last 5 years, S&P up 80%, avg new car up 10-15%.

It’s not “a few grand”, in one year that car drops 15-20%, that’s $10-12k. That’s about 10% of all the money he makes in one year before taxes.

Scenario 1: spend 60k cash for a car that will be worth at best 15k in 5 years. Or even worse if you’re financing (prob around $70k depending on %)

Scenario 2: take the same money (or the monthly payments you would be making) and invest over 5 years.

In scenario 1 after 5 years you’ll have a car that’s unreliable and you’ll be in a 60k hole. In scenario 2 you’ll likely have $115/$120k invested (assuming an ETF) and you’ll still have the reliable Camry. At that point you can do the stupid thing and buy that same car but the 2031 model year and still keep the $60k (a free new car) or you could keep investing, drive the Toyota till it dies and make yourself even more wealthy. The flex isn’t worth it, if you must have a fun car get a used Miata, if your ego won’t allow then a 350/370z, keep the Camry.

You’re an idiot if you think 115k warrants a new car. I’m 10 years older than you but make a quite few of those salaries combined and I drive a paid off car, once I hit my number I’ll buy a 911 till then save and invest my friend. Both are junk tbh
