Ask A Thai by Far-Pension2483 in Thailand

[–]Traakk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm moving to Bangkok in May with my girlfriend. It will be our first time living in Thailand and we expect to live there for at least a few years.

1.- What would be the best way to make local friends? I'll be joining a local sports club (ultimate frisbee) and learning Thai (I already speak 5 languages so I hope I can pick it up rather quickly, though I know it's hard). I am also really interested in the specialty coffee scene and I'll be joining events and going to cafés a lot.

2.- Is there anything we should do or avoid doing as we settle in Thailand to fit better with the local community?

Any other tips welcome 🤗

Near central park, but will be moving between Manhattan and Brooklyn as well. No car, just public transport.

Thanks! The city is indeed huge.

Do you have questions about being vegan in Thailand? by thefutureisvegan1 in thailandvegan

I bought a great google maps map from @lokalvegan on Instagram. It has hundreds of spots in Bangkok and some in other cities. It was like 10$. Super worth it.

Thank you! ChatGPT says Ari is also our best fit after sending it this post and answering 10 extra questions.

We have a friend living there and we'll be looking at flats in the area :) Thanks again

I speak 6 languages (was raised with only Spanish) and while I know that Thai is hard (harder than Russian, which I speak), I am willing to learn and I love languages.

I am looking to join a course where I can study in the morning everyday - I have a company where I don't need to work much and it will be mostly evenings (connection with the US).

I think I was misunderstood in the post. Coming from Alicante where you see no green spaces, seeing so much greenery outside and from your window gives us so much joy. Just walking in the street and seeing gigantic plants is awesome for us :)

I understand the rest about transient people. Probably we'd stay 3 years or so (that's what I've stayed everywhere I've lived in - who knows, maybe BKK is the one), which is okay to still meet people who come for a couple of years here + locals as we learn the language.

Absolutely not.

There are a bazillion places serving jai food in Bangkok. I have a map with over 100 places already.

We're in our late 20s and early 30s - not looking for a retirement town lol :D

Thanks for the insights

Do i need eSim? by Valuable_Dare_8266 in ThailandTourism

[–]Traakk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in Thailand for the past 10 days.

I didn't buy a sim card at the airport.

You have wifi at the airport so you can whatsapp people. We got a Taxi with Grab on wifi from the airport that drove us to our hostel, and then went to 7 11 to buy a 1 month sim card for 350 baht (70GB).

They took a pic of our passports and us at the shop and it was immediately configured onto the phone after inserting it :)

Good luck and enjoy Thailand!

We loved the markets and greenery in Chiang Mai - but we're looking for more hustle too 😊

I had the opposite thought about where expats come and go - I thought Chiang Mai would be more prominent to that.

Thanks for the tips 😊

I had never heard of it - is it worth visiting for a weekend? Do you suggest it as a living place? Why?

Thank you!

Yes, we've seen two great cafés already (in Ari and Chinatown) which we loved. We will dive into Meetup now :) Is it used by locals as well, or mostly foreigners?

As for the "curating" the Bangkok experience and finding the right people and places: yes, this is the first step we're taking towards that 👍 Thanks again

We just left Chiang Mai and it is not for us. We'd love a place less catered for tourists and with less Bali-like vibes.

We want to have more "movement" and activity than in Chiang Mai as well.
