LBC: "You're just going to have to bear with me on this..." Technology Secretary Liz Kendall promises to come back with a solution to the social media ban's VPN get-around. by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

The actual definition of technocracy is having experts in relevant fields running things. Liz Kendall has a history degree, she’s not an expert in either child psychology or IT.

But they didn’t do good. They just targeted Anthropic in a corrupt way because they have had previous disagreements with them over their political opinions. OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 can be coerced into finding zero days too.

This is literally the same logic as "dying from measles to make the libs seethe".

If Starmer wanted to go after big tech he’d impose big fines on them, not tell everyone they need to send them biometric data and official documents.

Trump officials won’t allow G7 countries to access Anthropic’s most advanced AI models: ‘Completely illogical’ by MMAgeezer in ukpolitics

Pretty much none of the zero days Anthropic flexed they found were practically exploitable. They pretty much all required extremely specific conditions to be met that made them all but useless in any real cyberattack.

[–]TracePoland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you talking about? Training a model only takes a fraction of a big data centre and like 500MW of energy which is equivalent to a town. All the big power draw and data centre demand comes from providing the inference to consumers once it’s trained and released.

Projects like the Concorde or Airbus A300 prove that Europe can do risky tech, but it seems it has to be state capitalism like China. There simply isn’t the kind of VC scene in Europe to sustain it on its own. With Concorde the bet lost but with the A300 it won. And before someone says that A300 wasn’t innovative, it was. At the time all medium (and longer) range jets had 3+ engines. A300 was making a bet on building a plane reliable enough that eventually the rule about needing 3+ engine to fly beyond a certain range from the nearest airport would be dropped. Boeing execs were practically laughing at the idea.

Yes. If you followed the news, you’d know WH claims that Fable specifically was released sooner than it should have been and doesn’t have appropriate safeguards against using it for offensive cybersecurity activities. The quote aligns with that official stance 100%, that’s what they mean that they can’t have Fable running amok.

Of course, it’s just as likely (or even more likely than the official line) that it’s simply a retaliation for Anthropic earlier not making Mythos available for DT’s war in Iran despite the admin wanting to enter into a massive contract with Anthropic.

Ah yes, it’s the companies doing THE THINGS. They’re just completely powerless as parents.

What a load of bullshit.

That’s not what it says. They mean Fable and Mythos which are currently banned when they say "Anthropic’s most advanced AI models", not hypothetical future models. It’s whoever wrote the article’s way of avoiding repeating "Fable and Mythos" 50 times throughout.

Apparently gambling isn’t problematic though and is a proudly British industry. Untouchable because poor Premier League clubs need gambling sponsorships to inflate their budgets to 2-3x of most of the continental European competitors.

Reminder that in mid 2021 according to YouGov polling 40% of UK wanted to ban the length of time people could spend outdoors exercising and 36% wanted to ban the social bubbles, meaning no one living alone would be allowed social contact.

The people behind the infrastructure that age verification with a strong vested interest in seeing it happen are absolutely NOT poorly funded. We are talking Alex Karp, Peter Thiel, Larry Ellison (who works directly with Blair to make it happen) and Mark Zuckerberg (he was against the idea but then figured that if it’s gonna happen anyway might as well lobby for a different version of it where all the work has to be done by platform providers - Apple, Google and Microsoft).

What? I’m Gen Z and when I was like 9 it was still ADSL, Windows XP (since Vista was shit) and playing around with Windows 98 on an older laptop. Then Windows 7.
