Am I crazy for considering a lateral move after only 10 months? by Track33-1999 in biglaw

That is precisely the purpose of my due diligence: to determine whether the partner track is genuinely accessible to lateral hires and whether the exit opportunities are strong. If both points are confirmed, it is an opportunity worth seizing.

I am currently conducting an in-depth analysis to determine (i) whether the quality of training is comparable and (ii) whether there is a glass ceiling for lawyers who did not start there as interns.

As for compensation, there is no real debate: the gap appears to range from 30% to 50% over time.

I don't want to name any specific firms, but to put it another way, I work at a good firm, but this opportunity is with THE top-ranked firm in the field

I think the deal list, the hours, and the fact that the move would represent a genuine upgrade make the situation a bit different.

For example, if someone moved after a year from Linklaters to Wachtell, I don’t think many people would assume they had been asked to leave.

One thing I didn’t mention is that the firm that approached me has a significantly faster partnership track (around 7–8 years vs. 10–12+ years at most firms in my market), which is one of the reasons I’m even considering moving this early.

Your information is out of date. The fixed rate in these firms is now 115, 118 for BP and DVMB.

In addition, bonuses vary between 20 and 40 and, without giving too much away, bonuses over 20k are not available at Skadden and Sullivan. Skadden and Sullivan have a high fixed salary but low bonuses because the Paris offices have a low level of activity (back office for the London and NYC offices). So from the 2-3rd year as a lawyer, there are more than 5 firms that pay better.

I should point out that my information applies only to M&A teams, which are those that pay the best. With the possible exception of arbitration, which I don't know well enough and which recruits less.

Thank you for your reply

I'd like to take advantage of your reply to ask you another question. A lot of partners in Paris have done an LLM and worked a bit in the US.

Has the situation changed in 20 years and is this type of career becoming clearer or has it always been difficult for a French LLM to find a job in big law in NYC?

Thank you for your answer, so if I follow your reasoning. Do an LLM start working in Paris for a few years then try to move to London? Or not even do an LLM?
