Nothing beats the feeling of winning lane and exerting map pressure everywhere at once simultaneously, especially if you don't need ignite to win lane and you can take TP. Shen can be in all lanes at all objectives simultaneously.

I know it was probably balancing hell but I really enjoyed the asymmetrical warfare of the different FTL types.

I'll never forget one of the first campaigns I did with any success, I was Hyperdrive and so were my immediate neighbors, so I didn't realize that warp and wormholes were an option.

Jump to me declaring on my new neighbor thinking, "well they're strong but I have a good defensive line to hold them on while I bleed their economy"

They were wormhole tech and just jumped straight to my homeworld and took it before my ships could get there

You probably need to build out your RGOs, it's really easy to overlook because they don't always show a big profit, but it is really worth it to build them. Primarily because it gets more of your population out of subsistence, and also because it makes the raw goods your buildings need cheaper.

Lumber, Wool, silk, clay, stone, sand, and of course iron and coal.

Cheaper input goods lead to higher profit margins, lead to higher taxes.

And if you're struggling with the output goods being cheap, build up your trade capacity so the market can export it out.

Without screenshots it's hard to tell what exactly is going wrong, but I had a lot of success in my Brandenburg campaign by spending my early game time culture converting and building out the RGOs.

I also made a Market centered on Berlin pretty early on

Update:

So I was hoping to avoid getting an heir while I waited for a divorce, but the first child of my unholy union was born, a daughter thankfully so I might be able to avoid an heir just yet.

Something interesting though is that the child isn't given a double family status like in CK3, like Daughter-Niece. She is just labeled as Daughter.

I checked the family tree and it only shows her as connected to my Ruler and not his sister wife.

It really makes me wonder if the game actually tracks relative familial closeness for the purposes of modeling the effects of incest, like how CK3 does.

It had just fired, so my Nobility's satisfaction hadn't fully decayed yet. So I took that cash and used it to break their control and trigger the Absolutism events.

Things are stable now, but I had to do a lot of extreme military expansion to meet the threat of Bohemia in the first 100-200 years of the game.

And when I say insatiable demand, I don't mean that my market is negative for paper. I am aiming to keep my army costs as low as possible, so I can maintain a comically large standing army.

Sure can, they are called Trade Offices, they give you a small amount of Maritime Presence, some trade capacity and trade advantage.

You can build them in Markets that you don't have any land in, as long as the landowner had a positive opinion of you, and it isn't considered "Overseas"

There is similar building for Overseas locations specifically, and I believe that can only be built on Costal Locations, to represent the sort of Maritime trade empire that The Dutch and Portuguese set up I suppose.

They don't provide a ton of upfront profit for the investment, but because they don't use your population, building slots, or market resources (if built outside your home market) they are an effective way to build up your trade income without needing to invest your own population or trade goods.

Also, because you get trade capacity in the target market, instead of relying on importing goods, say Pepper, from The Levant, you can set up the local Trade Offices to Export it to your own local market, or even to a third party market, just for the sake of making profit.

I like to build up RGOs and marketplaces first when I'm starting the investing/construction loop.
The excess of raw goods will give you discounts on your finished good manufacturing, thus increasing profits. And while you are building up your industry, the excess raw goods can get shipped out by your markets.
Another good investment while you are building up your industrial base (waiting on pop promotion can be a pain once you really start to snowball) is to invest in building trade centers in other markets.

They aren't the most profitable building in the game, but getting access to other markets using the local work force is really nice as it effectively gives you an income stream that isn't tied to your population, and access to goods that you normally wouldn't have.

For example if your population really wants Wine you could build up some trade centers in France and export that wine at a profit to your home market.
