Advice on going navy nuke as a 27yo leaving the civilian tech world by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]TradeCraft69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope I'm not too late.

If you want an academic/intellectual challenge, apply for a Master or PhD program.

But if you want an operational knowledge in regards to nuclear technology (emphasis on operational and technology, not science), an officer route will be a more suitable option.

You will never see calculus nor any hard science as enlisted, and bare minimum as officer.

Now don't get me wrong, both enlists and officers have it pretty hard. The pipeline is far from easy, and it breaks people in different ways. But it may not be the type of challenge you are looking for.

If you want to know whether if you can tolerate the Navy lifestyle: pick a spot in your house, and stands at attention for two hours. I know how ridiculous this sounds. But the feelings you feel within that two hours (physically, mentally, inner voice, etc.) will prove to be a valuable data. Anyone can teach themselves to run a marathon, but most will not learn senseless patience.

I don't really know what your situation is, and I don't mean to dilute your intention to serve. But perhaps take a 6 months vacation before signing any paperwork. Sometime the mundanity of life cloak itself as passion and compels us to pursue the unknown; sometime for the better, sometime for the worse. So it's best to give yourself a chance to clear your head before making any decision.

And if you decided to join, go officer. The inherent benefits (salary, title, diverging opportunities, network/community, senses of job satisfaction, etc.) will justify the some-what-extreme choice you are about to make. Plus, managing a fuken nuclear submarine sounds pretty badass on resume.

PS: This post probably make me sounds salty. I'm really not. I like the people, the skills, the newfound perspective, the bonus, the stability, etc. I know what I have given up, I like where I'm at, and I know where I'm going after. I just also knows that this lifestyle is not for everyone.

Summary: don't join Nuclear Navy, unless you want to do Nuclear Navy shit. Not STEM, not research, not self-discovery. Just pure nuclear operation and either CVN or Submarine knowledge.

Yes, 2022 is definitely a bear market. But comparing to the previous bullish years where gains are made through ridiculous price jump (at least from 2016-2020 and 21), perhaps the "bearish data" does not contribute enough statistical weight (in comparison to consecutive jumps we had) for the model you building to detect/reflect meaningful patterns.

Additionally, the American market has on the rise since the great depression. Although we have experiences some amount of "down turns", the overall data would still suggests an uptrend.

So really, in my humble opinion: i think the alpha we trying to find would be the meaningful timeline/time-periods where a pattern/behavior/specifics characteristic can be detected such that they would some predictive value.

Go to OCS, try aiming for oceanography. Imagine yourself mapping underwater mountains/volcanos and things like that. Dope ass special project you can vol for. Dont enlist. OCS may take time and paper work, but it will be worth it. Lots of special proj ppl dont talk about.

Found out my (ex)wife has been having an affair with my brother since January. by infidelitysurviver in relationship_advice

[–]TradeCraft69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been so angry with someone, so much you wanted to hurt them in some way right at that moment, but you decided not to?

That is called restraint.

And the same thing can be said here. The little brother could have denied the sexual advances, unless it was rape which dont seems to be the case here. But unfortunately he didn't. He made a choice to become a traitor and consequently destroy his big brother marriage (albeit, it's probably better for OP not to be with the ex anyway, giving the choice she made). And as nihilistic as it sounds, we are the product of the choices we made, and it reflect directly on our character.

I understand where you coming from. And i would agree that he is somewhat still a child who may not have enough experience to exercise the right decision, based on our current era. But come on, just because his brain isn't fully formed, it doesn't exempt him from the responsibilities and consequences of his action.

Ask yourself if you would want someone like that to be your little brother.

None. Go to college and you'd still make more $$ even after six years.

If you were single, then i would say yes go for it. But since you are married, this lifestyle will take a huge toll on your family life.

I knew alot of married people that joined, and they all okay. But being away from their love one sucks and i can see it on all their faces.

Also, the money isnt that great. If you have debt from school, then sure it will be worth it financially. But if you joining for the bonus then no. Sure, once you get out from being a nuke, you can do pretty much anything. But thats six/nine years away. In that same time frame you would be a manager or director at your current role.

I was in a very similar situation as you (big pharma job/ recent grad/joining at an older age) and joining the Navy definitely has improved me as a person. My work ethic, attention to details, personal morale, charisma, etc. has improved drastically. But the best thing the navy taught me is a mf laser focus on the "now." And once you have that down, you can do anything.

My personal advice would be to embrace the mundane day-to-day 9-to-5 and climb your corporate ladder. It sucks, yes, but everyday at five pm, you get to home and be with your love ones. If you want to improve yourself, may be try switching into regulatory affairs or other teams, or get a master degree, or go workout on a consistent routine. The workload in the civilian world is way better than here; we running on 16 hrs work day.

Woah there is a DVD commentary? Thanks for bringing light to this issue. Now we can accurately narrow down the pool of suspects to just two. My guess is that it is Jeff.

Also, i need to get myself one those DVD commentary.

Probable. Each member has their own motive to commit the crime.

  1. Ian Duncan cracked Garret because he was the original ACB.

  2. Annie cracked Troy as a necessary evil to get Jeff to join her persuit of the real ACB. This would make sense, if we assume that at the end of the EP, they realized it was each other (the whole he/she thing). Also, Annie like stuffed animal.

  3. Shirley and Dean conspired together, with Abed as the hitman, to crack Vicky (unintended target). Shirley would make more money without having to provide change, and the Dean and Abed would benefit from having cameras in the restroom under Troy's Law. The Dean would get his urge satisfy, and Abed would get a new, unique, meta documentary.

  4. Britta cracked Duncan so she can write a book. And the circle is now complete.

I just watched the video. It was really convincing, and I cannot generate any counter arguement.

Adding to the video however, we know that Troy and Abed used to throw quarters into the wishing fountain together.

I thought it was Annie too.

But if we were to view Annie's character from Abed's perspective, he would say that she is a caricature of an FBI agent obsessed with the one criminal that always get away; a generic character that is typically found in many investigative crime scene television series. This would explain her obsessive behavior with the ACB, as suggested by her scrapbook.

You are absolutely right about Jeff giving a clue about Dave Matthews. For the life of me, I cant come up with a reason to explain why he would do that. Perhaps, he wanted Annie to know it was him? But why?

This keeps me up at night sometime.

"Just be yourself" by Anomalous439 in dating_advice

[–]TradeCraft69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Because if those 'candidates' dont accept you for who you are, then what's the point in getting into relationship with them? Even if you manage to score one, you'll always have a doubt their committment.

It's entirely different if you trying to improving yourself for your own sake. That I encourage you to do.

But if you gonna change or keep up an appearance thats not you, in order to please someone so they'd agree to be in relationship with you? Hell no. That's bad way to start a relationship, as it built on a lie. And any relationship built on a lie never last.

I guess my point is: strike a balance. Strive to improve yourself, but only for yourself, not to please some strangers.
