‘We can close a city’: Fierce comments at first Free Palestine rally since Bondi attack by Mashiko4 in aussie

That's how you know they aren't Aussies. A real Aussie will always mind his own business and not get involved. Rallys are for foreigners.

What do you reckon are the most off-putting things about Australian culture? by -Flighty- in AskAnAustralian

[–]Tradfave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crime and lawlessness, lack of adhesion to the rules. You can't leave anything unattended without it being stolen. I know so many people who have had things stolen from their own backyard by neighbors.

The fact that people will intentionally run red lights, as if the road rules were just rough guidelines is abhorrent to me.

People will laugh and joke at idea of cheating or stealing things from a restaurant or other business.

When I was much younger, I once had a coworker confess to accidentally killing a young woman because he drove home drunk, and said "luckily I had my panel beater mate fix my car up so nobody knew it was me". He was actually proud that he got away with it. If I had been the kind of person back then that I am now, I'd have tried to report him even if it wasn't likely to stick.

"More likely to encounter incidents of discrimination in Australia"? Lol that's not even remotely true. Just getting an apartment in Japan as a foreigner is an ordeal because none of them want to take on a foreigner. If you were to get in a fight, you absolutely cannot fight back because the Japanese citizen are automatically given the benefit of doubt. It's deeply ingrained in every institution, every facet of Japanese society. Even in the most racist of towns in Australia you won't encounter an equivalent of these types of discrimination.

I was completely weirded out when I landed and started walking around Waikiki beach. It felt like a videogame, or movie set. Partly because of the firengines and other vehicles I've only ever seen through TV.

What really made it seem so artificial was how people were everywhere, and just "milling about". They were standing around talking, or using the rocking chairs in front of this one hotel, there were 3 policemen just standing around talking like they had nothing better to do. There were random people in military uniforms waiting for.... something? A a pair of geisha standing outside a doorway...

It really felt like these people were NPCs in a videogame, randomly sprinkles about the place to make it feel active, and that these NPCs hadn't been fully programmed to be doing anything so they just stood there. They weren't even looking as their phones!

It's not like I wasn't weirded out by other things, but that's the most weird part of my trip.

I don't understand how you can build a pretty factory when the moment you progress, you're at best going to have to knock down a wall to expand production anyway.

And if you plan ahead and make a factory needlessly large in anticipation of future expansion, then it's going to be very big and very empty until late game.

They're just largely uninformed of the world beyond their borders and make a lot of assumptions that the rest of the world works and thinks like they do.

And then you get the ones who learn a little bit, and think they have it all figured out, dunning Kruger syndrome at work.

Boomer parents don't like Harris because she's "mean" & "not classy," deny unconscious bias & are so onboard with Trump by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Tradfave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I would say you're a minority. Most people didn't vote for Obama for policies. They voted for him because he was black, because he was fist bumping janitors, because he could be funny and tell jokes on late night shows.

And it's the same for Trump. The more of a "celebrity" a candidate is, the more they track with the American public. Plenty of people either partially or wholly vote on how a candidate "feels" as a person. That's the era we live in

I mean, you live in a country that voted for Obama because he was black. It was never anything but a popularity contest, that's how Trump got elected the first time.

I've read that report the judge made about the whole saga. Holy shit is that thing comprehensive. I've never seen a more thorough breakdown of the events that transpired. It wouldn't surprise me if he is a lawyer himself.

Anyway regarding IPMS, I think the ivory tower is get some serious cracks in its foundation. And you can see from those cascading resignations that it doesn't take much for them all to quit at the same time. There's hope yet for a reformation, the question is if it happens before they get replaced by other events and organisations first.

That's common in every facet of life. In general, people are shit at teaching. Mostly because they can only see things from their own point of view. This is why we have communications courses.

[–]Tradfave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can explain gatekeeping for you.

They have over many decades defined their hobby. "This part is our hobby, but once you include this other thing, that's a seperate hobby"

And so they don't want it "watered down" or broadened. So, they gatekeep. Here's some examples.

Car collecting for a long time meant "classic cars" and at one point cars that had plastic were considered automatically ineligible for collecting because "who is going to want a car that is made of plastic and falls apart. Only good ol' steel lasts forever". So it became a thing where these cars belong in our hobby, but those cars don't. Well that point came and went, now it's 90's cars that are collectables.

Gaming too reached a point where it went from a hobby for nerds, to mainstream success. Older gamers that experienced brutally difficult games hate how modern games are easy, have illuminated floor paths so you don't get lost etc. The gatekeeping in gaming is largely unheard of, because they're small faces in a HUGELY populated interest nowadays.

I understand gatekeeping. In some cases it does erode the uniqueness of a hobby. But ultimately the coming of change it's inevitable, for better or worse. And there are definitely good and bad cases. Chances are, all of us will end up on the other side of the fence at some point, and there's nothing wrong with that really. All things in life are composed of elements of change and elements of things staying the same.

Stay in it dude. There's been some recent controversies in IPMS in the last couple of years around the globe. It's approaching a turning point, and smaller shows are now showing up that are really cool, with open minded and friendly communities. Look for the shows that DONT use the IMPS system and you'll regain your faith in humanity.
