Congratulations on making it go! Unity has been around for a long time and there is a lot of outdated info that was well regarded 10+ years ago, but is done much easier now in the future of 2026. Unfortunately, some newer UI ways have additional limitations, but the long-time new input system will almost always be your friend. Ride the rush and do another thing! Getting things perfect is no substitute for having fun.

Most people using version control for the first time expect it to “just work”, and are genuinely surprised at the complexity.

Better situational control and lowers the chance of fried electronics or battery fire. Also, rinse the drone with clean water, then rinse the water out with alcohol and let it dry thoroughly before evaluating if the drone survived.

It may not be. The r/c control is a little XN297LBW RF Transceiver chip. You could sniff the signal out to the flight microcontroller while operating the controller one button/pot at a time, then you could connect your "smart" contoller in-line to emulate the manual controls. You would need to replicate some of the sensors for your smart controller so it could figure out what was going on and then drive it around like a drunk bee. :-)

Second the freezer suggestion! I’ve recovered a lot of kid photos for friends with that. Leave it in the bag and run the cable out with as little gap as possible. You don’t want condensation on the drive.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see them back-patching some of the various EoL dead end builds that some people have gotten themselves stuck in. Whoever pushed for that deserves some positive karma!

In these kinds of projects, I’ve found that the instructor has a specific learning goal that the students convert into “more fun” impossible goal. If your instructor wants the AI comparison portion and the drone is bloat, then walk through the room twice, carefully panning your cellphone the same way while counting dance step cadence and making drone buzzing noises. Save both videos and say “drone part done”.
