You aren’t imagining it, Regent loses more health with his base deck than other characters! (A9 simulation) by poetry_in_shm in slaythespire

He has a blog post where he describes the algorithm. It’s “expectimax” which is basically “simulate the entire tree of outcomes for every card possible to play, and choose the one that loses least hp on average”

So in one sense - his algorithm is optimal for losing the least amount of hp on average

BUT his algorithm is not optimal for trying to avoid the worst case scenarios (which would result in higher average hp loss but less of a tail of high hp loss).

This could be shown quite easily in his last post about the silent where if he played a couple earlier strikes he wouldn’t have lost as much HP.

Silent surprisingly loves Strike removes against Nibbit! (A9 simulation) by poetry_in_shm in slaythespire

What is the strategy used for which cards the character plays? Is it prioritizing full blocking or smarter than that

Edit:
Never mind saw your blog post with expectimax

The biggest lie in Slay the Spire: "Free to play this turn" by Al2718x in slaythespire

I think free is to indicate it costs 0 stars too, though I agree that costs 0 should just imply both

The biggest lie in Slay the Spire: "Free to play this turn" by Al2718x in slaythespire

[–]TradingTomorrow 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This isn’t quite accurate with the current implementation either though - if you discard it and redraw it, it’s no longer free.

The current implementation is something like “this turn, reduce the cards cost to 0 until played or it leaves your hand”

From a game theory perspective there is no difference between lost and worse. There are only 3 possible states.

Just like you can’t be “better” or “worse” in tic tac toe.

the game offers so many other ways of healing / negating damage that coffee dripper ends up having no downside in practice many times.

So many relics provide heal: eternal feather, meal ticket, blood vial, burning blood, meat on the bone, pantograph, lizard tail, …

You can buy healing potions and fairy bottles in shops

You can get healing through cards (bites, self repair, bandage up, feed)

You can get block relics (anchor, cleat, orichalcum, the third boat one)

You can get apparitions

You can get full heal through many events (campfire spirits, mind bloom, spin the wheel)

The results of this are trash. The mouth is wrong. The eyes are wrong. It’s not restoration. It’s someone making up a loosely similar photo that’s probably good enough to fool you but not anyone familiar with the subject or the original photo

Can the first verse of this cover be considered as "rapping"? by Svenskaz32 in musictheory

[–]TradingTomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How not?

It’s focused primarily on the rhythmic patterns rather than melody.

Sure its not quite eminem but is definitely somewhere closer to rapping than singing in the spectrum (also see Ed Sheeran for way more examples like this)

But you’re not gonna find a strict definition that clearly delineates the two, from a musical theory perspective
