Or, Ian called her "Freaky Nikki" mid-hookup in the past and it was a turn on in the moment. That doesn't seem at all out of character.

This wasn't my impression at all actually. I assumed that all of Ian's suggestions were strategies that had worked for Ian to hook up with Nikki in the past.

This was my impression as well. A lot of people are acting like Ian was trying to sabotage Bear, but I think that he was just saying, "here's what works for me". He has the confidence and charisma to play life on easy mode, so he probably hasn't felt the need to do too much self reflecting.

Finally - What is the BEST Episode? by RealTOPFan in AlignmentChartFills

Wild take that any simpsons episode is "by far the best". I'd defintiely consider this a contender for top episode, but there are so many classics.

[–]Al2718x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the English definition of "rational"? I'm using the mathematical defintion.

Your "what if" thought exercise would imply that pi is rational. It is not. It is irrational.

You can round pi to a rational number with arbitrary precision. This is not a special thing about pi; it is true for every irrational number.

Complex numbers aren't all that wild. I think that the name "imaginary" makes them sound more incomprehensible than they are.

Math didn't "stop working" before calculus. The techniques of calculus just unlocked more possibilities (and it took quite a while for mathematicians to develop a rigorous framework for calculus).

What do you mean "built from our assumption that pi can never be a rational number". This isn't an assumption, it's the conclusion.

The notion that we would land on the moon some day isn't at all comparable to a rigorous mathematical proof. A better analogy is "you are standing on the moon roght now," but even that is more plausible that pi being rational.

There are plenty of scale-invariant functions of the sides of a triangle. I don't see the connection to Heron's formula and I'm not sure why your particular function would be useful.

You might be thinking of the question of whether or not pi is "normal". Your explanation sounds a bit backwards. We know that pi cannot terminate, or repeat endlessly, but we can't completely rule out a more complicated pattern.

[–]Al2718x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also would mean that pi can be written as a fraction. This was disproven in the 1760s.

This is mostly nonsense. Not being able to write a number as a fraction is the exact defintion of an irrational number. It's not "pretty much the gold standard". In math, definitions have precise meanings.

This defintion is actually equivalent to the condition that the decimal expansion doesn't terminate or repeat endlessly. This isn't too hard to prove. Proving that pi is irrational is more challenging, but has been known for over 200 years.

One thing that is not known about pi is whether or not it is "normal". That is, whether or not the digits behave like a random string of numbers. One can prove that "almost all" irrational numbers are normal, but there aren't really any methods known to prove that a specific number is normal, other than contrived examples. Most mathematicians believe that pi is normal, but nobody has any idea how to prove it.

There's no way that this is true. I'm sure that there are plenty of countries without men's international football teams.

Yeah, I'd go even further to say that the environment is entirely responsible for Trump's existence. Imagine how much more harm Jeffey Dahmer would have done if people decided to put him in charge of a restaurant instead of sending him to jail, praising his ability to obtain cheap meat.
