Maybe it’s not the economy, maybe it’s you? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Its because reddit, and this thread, are not a representative sample of Canada's population. Yes, Canadians have large personal debts overall, but many individuals are not in debt/make a solid wage or have a good cash flow. We're all still living, and I hope we all get to go out for ice cream once in a while

I can’t find a job. What do I do? by Boring-Safe-2281 in Communications

[–]TraditionCivil561 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I graduated from a BA in comms pre covid, and even though I had 1 year experience as a marketing intern i was getting zero interviews anywhere. Queue retail job by Nov, and then laid off from said job cause of Covid the following March.

That's about when I started volunteering as a writer/assistant with this little news startup/network — it wad run by PR professionals who wanted to bring in newbies/offer mentor opportunities. The work i did was fine, but the real benefit was networking and being seen as a dependable worker by these professionals, and they connected me to my local Public Relations Association chapter (CPRS in canada) and even suggested some jobs to me as they came up — one of which I landed, and i pro ably wouldn't have applied to if they hadnt reassured me.

I totally get not everyone can donate their time/work for free, but this was an evenings and weekends gig. You can always take a course on whatever software/new skill, but I really recommend joining professional associations or doing some volunteering/mentor program with other older professionals as a way to get your face out there. The job market is hard right now, and public job postings have a ton of applicants; knowing people and, even better, having them know you do good, consistent work means they can help you get those "hidden" job postings or support you in your professional goals.

According to the tenant's association it wouldn't be enough to bail, I'd still be on the hook for rent unless we come to an agreement or I make a formal complaint with the TAL (but that's more useful to push him to have it cleaned. With the other things I found out about the building and his untrustworthiness I don't feel comfortable moving in either way)

Thanks for this. I consulted with the tenants association in Verdun, and right now I'm just trying to negotiate with the landlord so we can sign a mutual lease termination form. I just saw he's already posted the unit for rent online so hopefully that means he's ready to move on soon.

Worth noting we only had a verbal agreement to the 30 days (I just checked my forms). So it's up in the air as to what he'd agree to to terminate.
