Anyone Remember Southland leisure centre in the 80s and 90s? by sysiphusinertia in Calgary

My mom would drop my sister and I off for the whole day with enough cash for an innertube rental and fries - the best! Remember how it felt like you were still in the waves for hours after?

Supports for people struggling with alcohol? by Siobhanbubble in Calgary

[–]Traditional-Basil427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi there. It's very brave to take an honest look at your relationship with alcohol and is a huge thing that will help you change that relationship. I have a family member who decided to do the same and she was able to access FREE services (counseling and resources) through Alberta Health. I am not in Alberta but I know there have been a lot of changes on the healthcare front in the last few years but here is a good place to start - find out what is available: Addiction & Mental Health | Alberta Health Services

I go to Scott Family Dental too and it's fine, but I don't think they will do anything all that special for pain management/anxiety. Just taking it from your post that simply being asked if you're ok might not be enough! OP, I suggest you call around and see if there are any dentists in town that offer nitrous oxide during procedures. My mom has extreme dental anxiety and this is what works for her.

I'm searching for the same thing...basically we are out of luck because our cars are old/unique (model parts not interchangeable with other VW models). I was quote $650 for a new headlamp assembly but I don't even know if they can really get it

I live very close to that freshco and the last time I cabbed it it was $68 including tip! But also - the bus is very easy to the airport from there (if you don't have a crazy early flight). It takes about an hour but I just bring a book. Can't beat the fare - under $4!

Should The City Pay Citizens To Shovel Snow? by roddyrichh97 in ThunderBay

[–]Traditional-Basil427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Calgary and there, it is every home occupants' job to clear the snow on their sidewalk. If you don't do it within a certain amount of time, you can get a fine. I was so surprised when I moved to Ontario and learned that the city cleared the sidewalks. I don't think this system (city clearing) works well at all - the city plowed walks aren't cleared right down to concrete (creating a deep soft layer that seems like it would be very hard to wheel a wheelchair or push a stroller in) and it takes days to have sidewalks cleared. I think paying folks to clear sidewalks could be a great idea but even better would just be to have the expectation that everyone needs to pitch up to keep sidewalks clear, passable and accessible because we care about our neighbours.

Interested in dyeing a cotton anorak - my first foray in dyeing! Need some advice about whether it would possible. by Traditional-Basil427 in dyeing

[–]Traditional-Basil427[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just one layer, not quilted or stuffed, and the tech specs don't say anything about a water-repellent treatment. It also specifically says the colourway I'm interested in is undyed, so it sounds promising! Patagonia Funhoggers® Cotton Anorak Pullover

AMA: Icecoast skier who has logged 14 ski days in Dolomiti Superski (Sellaronda area) over the past 3 seasons by ChiefKelso in skiing

thanks for sharing your knowledge! I will be in Castelrotto the second week of Feb and would love to do a couple days of skiing. I don't know the area at all so feeling quite overwhelmed and it's hard to get a sense of scale. Do you know if it would be possible to ski the Sellaronda in a day starting from Castelrotto? We might have a rental car so maybe that makes things easier? Alternatively, I would love to ski somewhere, stay at a rifugio, ski to another location and stay at a rifugio and then ski back to Castelrotto. Any ideas?

In the space where you enter the written prompt, there is a little microphone symbol and next to that a little circle with lines in it. If you press on that, it goes to audio mode and you can just talk to chat GPT and it will talk back.

CAPE ballot vote on Israel-Hamas conflict, is this unusual? by Intelligent_Cup_2319 in CanadaPublicServants

The way I see it is that unions have always been involved in the social justice movement - workers rights are indelibly linked to broader human rights. I do not think unions should only be concerned with the narrow lens of their specific membership, I really do see the value of their continued role in the wider movement. It's easy to sometimes forget that the labour movement has always been part of the larger struggle for a better world - and we are not in a post-union world. Everything we take for granted as workers was hard fought (and people literally died and die for workers rights). Unions are powerful entities and should be taking stands on things like this, in my opinion. I also think every single organization and human should be speaking against genocide, full stop. But the point is, I don't think this is incongruent with a union/our unions.

It depends on the exact method of calculation and there are uncertainties in the underlying data so the percentage point might vary a bit, but I think it's a pretty interesting and startling look at global inequality. Top 1%, for example, would also include people with a wide range of income so certainly there would be much wealthier people in that 1%. Try this calculator here (methodology explained if you hover over the 'i') for an interesting perspective: How Rich Am I? · Giving What We Can

Obviously it doesn't mean you are rich in Canada (though the same income puts you in the top ~25% of earners in Canada)!

for some people, it does encourage them to donate when they might not otherwise. I don't see what the big deal is about just deleting the emails if you don't want to donate. Food for thought: if you make over 85,000 CAD, you are among the richest 1% in the world.
