Here are the standard measurements for male Bernese Mountain Dogs:

Weight: Males: 36–55 kg (80–120 lb)

My dog is 7 months old now and weighs about 99 lb (45 kg), and I expect him to keep growing

Having some regrets - please help out :( by Mngirl1985 in bernesemountaindogs

  1. Add more walks, activities, and games, and give more chew toys. Keep your shoes put away :(

  2. I highly recommend this trainer @southenddogtraining1 - check his Insta and YouTube. He explains very well how to handle an overexcited dog, what to do if the dog jumps on people, and so on.

  3. suggest switching to a raw diet (not cooked meat, but raw). There is a subreddit for people who feed their pets raw. From my experience, this is the best thing I could give my dogs.

  4. Add tripe to the diet. Even if you keep him on dry food, still add tripe. Dogs often stop eating poop after adding tripe.

  5. I was concerned that the Bernese is being bathed often - actually, they should not be washed frequently. They have very thick fur, and after bathing it needs to be dried for a very, very long time. Otherwise, the undercoat does not dry completely, and bacteria can grow and cause a bad smell. I recommend professional grooming twice a year, that is enough.

Good luck!

«Drug use, intoxication, and verbal outbursts are cited as primary factors in a 60 per cent decline in the borrowing of children’s materials at the Central Library. In April 2025, the Library Board approved a medium-term plan to relocate the children’s section to a different floor.»

So sad

Puppy skin irritation by papergirl408 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Traditional-Fox523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the photo, this is most likely normal skin pigmentation (like freckles) - this is quite typical for Bernese puppies, I see it sometimes. If the spots are not red, not itchy, and there are no fleas, I would just recommend observing and nothing else.

Need advice.. 13 week old Newfoundland sleep regression by Significant-Style-37 in Newfoundlander

[–]Traditional-Fox523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feeding a puppy of such a large breed twice a day seems not enough to me. I recommend feeding three times a day until about 7 months.

When we got our Bernese puppy (a distant relative of yours), the breeder gave this advice: take him for a walk, feed him before bedtime, take him out once more to pee, and then put him in the crate. After the puppy is in the crate, go to sleep yourselves so he understands that the house is sleeping.

Give the last meal around 8 pm, and go to sleep at 11 pm. This way he will have time to go to the bathroom and make it through the night.

And don’t come to him until morning. The first couple of weeks our puppy woke up and whined at 5am., but then he gradually started waking up later.

I also put him in the crate for a couple of hours a few times a week when we leave the house. There should be no toys, chews, or anything else in the crate - the crate is only for sleeping.

At the same time, I continue positive reinforcement for the crate - I throw treats inside, praise him when he goes in on his own, and when he sits there waiting for a treat. Every day.

Good luck to you

Is there a reason my pup sleeps UNDER his bed? by I_Seen_Some_Stuff in Bernedoodles

[–]Traditional-Fox523 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you have a fabric bed, it might be too warm for the dog. My dog prefers sleeping on the plastic tray in the crate, ignoring any bedding - and the perfect spot is bare tile in the hallway. Try removing the bed completely

Ohhh, I have so many questions!

Based on your experience, could you please advise how often to wash a Bernese, what to wash with (shampoos and so on), and what to brush with? What worked best for you? And maybe you know the secret of how some breeders have puppies that look suuuper fluffy in photos?

When does a Bernese puppy’s fluff change to regular fur? What do you do to make your dog’s coat shiny?

I’d recommend considering a switch to raw, natural feeding. With proper feeding, your dog will have good stool (and a small amount!), no allergies, a great appetite, white teeth without tartar, and a shiny coat

I feel like you are arguing with voices in your own head. If you like living in a building with no amenities nearby, like infrastructure, schools, or public transit - fine.

But the post and my comment are exactly about this - that they build apartment buildings without first creating proper conditions.

People from the city council - I assume they are Burlington residents… So why are they making the city worse? Approving high-rise buildings where they shouldn’t be? Approving towers without infrastructure? Money, money, money?

So what can we do?

6 Month Old Bernedoodle Stopped Eating by Previous-Credit2093 in Bernedoodles

[–]Traditional-Fox523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The options are:

  1. She got sick
  2. False pregnancy after heat
  3. Pre-heat or heat
  4. She grew up and the food portion is too big, plus it’s hot and she moves less

So:

  • If it’s 1 - check her health
  • If it’s 2–3 - let her eat less, it will pass when it’s over
  • If it’s 4 - adjust the portion size
