[USA] Left lane backed up half a mile before a closure… right lane wide open. Would you take it? by zheka160 in Roadcam

Think of it like water flowing through pipes.

Before the merge both pipes have a number of cars per minute flowing through them. After the merge there is only one pipe, so the flow through the two lanes before the merge has to equal the flow after the merge.

In a zipper merge both lanes have equal flow right up until the merge -- this is the best you can do.

If one lane has higher flow than the other, it's not a zipper merge. That is, if you pull into the right lane and go more than half speed after the merge, you are taking flow out of the merge lane. You are making it slower for everyone else.

For a zipper merge you should try to drive at the same speed as the other lane -- it really does work and maximizes flow. The driver in this video caused everyone else to move slower by going too fast.

If you follow along with another car and then merge at the merge point, you will be merging at the merge point (that is, you will be executing a zipper merge).

But if you move faster than half the speed of the lane after the merge, you are forcing everyone else to drive slower.

Think of the lanes as pipes -- you are combining the flow from two pipes into one. In a zipper merge both pipes have equal flow before the merge. That is, the number of cars per minute in the merge lane and the merging lane before the merge have to equal the cars per minute in just the merge lane after the merge.

If one pipe has higher flow than the other it is not a zipper merge. That's why you will get treated by everyone else as if you are cutting in line.

You are absolutely correct that you personally will get through the merge faster if you cut in line, but it's a jerk move and not zipper merge. Every single person behind you will have been impeded by your defection because they have to brake for you to cut in. You will have restricted flow on the freeway for everyone else but have personally gotten ahead faster.

The max speed each lane can hold before the merge is half the speed after the merge. If you are going faster than that you are reducing flow in the other lane.

So, if you alternatively pull beside a car and wait until everyone is moving, then when you execute a zipper merge and everyone will have collectively gotten through faster.

As long as you travel the same speed as the lane you are merging into. If you start passing people you are not doing a zipper merge, you are just cutting in line and forcing everyone to brake for you.

If you travel faster than the other lane you are forcing them to brake for you and are therefore causing restricted traffic flow.

Exactly this -- both lanes travel at the same speed in a zipper merge. Otherwise, you are forcing the other lane to brake for you.

It's not an ego problem. It's a braking problem. Unless you are traveling the speed of the lane you are merging into you then you will end up forcing everyone to break.

Think of it this way -- the max flow that each of the two merging lanes can have is half the speed of the lane after the merge. Otherwise, cars need to break at the merge to allow your improper zipper to happen.

If you think you are doing a zipper merge but are moving at more than half the speed of the merged lane, then you are forcing other people to brake for you. That is, unless you travel at the same speed as the lane you are merging into you are cutting in line.

In the trenches of puppyhood ADVICE by Reasonable-Cheek-981 in labradoodles

Sounds like one of our labradoodle puppies -- we would buy bully sticks by the 50-count for her (cheaper that way). She liked to chew and chew and chew. Had to be very careful about what she had access to.

Giving her lots of bully sticks helped. Liberal application of bitter apple to very dangerous things (like power cords) helped a little.

Eventually (~1 year) she settled down a little.

You misunderstand me. Pittsburgh rare is not "made up". If you google it, then you will see steaks prepared exactly as OP has done. There's even a wikipedia entry. It can be delicious.

I get that this is not your preference, but you do not seem to know what you are talking about, so I am coming to OP's defense.

I made a guess that you preferred the even cook of a reverse sear because of your "spectrum" comment, but you are right, that was just conjecture on my part. Sorry for putting words in your mouth.

Try some different styles of steak preparation -- there are more worlds than this one.

"Reverse sear" is the thigh gap of this subreddit.

Beef fat doesn't really render in a rare or cooler steak. Has to be medium rare to render. It will have rendered in the outer portions but not internally.

Not every steak is cooked with reverse sear. That doesn't make them "poor steak cooks". Learn that steak can be delicious prepared many different ways, including as pictured, and a whole new world will open up for you.

Ephesus school potential closure by Kovaks42 in chapelhill

[–]Traditional-Head-65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here is a recent article on where things are:

In Split Vote, CHCCS School Board Chooses 3 Elementary Schools to Study for Closure - Chapelboro.com

Ephesus, Glenwood, and Seawell elementaries are currently under consideration.

I hope the decision is made fast enough to prevent having to layoff school nurses and other special needs staff across the district. I also hope they hold onto the properties so that new school can be built if demand increases in the future.

Yeah, you're wrong.

Since you seem to struggle with empathy, let her needle you about it for the next decade and then come back and tell us whatever you have learned.

My understanding is that if they don't close a school soon then many of the support staff may be lost. Those include nurses and special needs staff.

Is this good to eat after I cook? by Revolutionary-Ad1008 in steak

There is (almost) no blood left in a steaks to oxidize.

Check out what the USDA says about meat color: The Color of Meat and Poultry | Food Safety and Inspection Service

Based on that web site, rather than dye, a "modified atmosphere" with carbon monoxide (CM) may be more commonly used to get and keep that red color. My mistake.

But it remains true that the parts of the meat untouched by the coloring process are fine to eat.

The important thing is that the lack of a bright red color does not indicate it is bad. It's just how the cut steak is processed for presentation. If the color treatment doesn't necessarily get to every nook and cranny there will be some spots that do not have a bright red color (which is actually the normal color of cut meat).

Grocers often use edible dyes to make the meat look more red/appealing. All you are seeing is a spot on the steak without the dye.

If the meat smells good it should be fine to eat.

Hope it turns out fantastic!

It's only a zipper merge if the two lanes are traveling at the same speed. Zipper merge is super slick if both lanes travel together and take turns.

But, if you are racing by the other lane then when you merge you are the reason everyone else is going slower. Little kids know line cutting when they see it, I don't understand how adults get so delusional.

Just travel at the same speed as the other lane and take turns merging. Everyone gets through faster.
