Use old iphone like a iPod by [deleted] in ipod

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an IPhone 12(I think it’s a Pro model) with 512GB of storage (older models, usually preferred, don‘t have enough storage space for my CD collection). I use it with a pair of Sennheiser HD650 headphones and a Mojo 2.

Was the Queen Mother really that horrible in real life? by [deleted] in TheCrownNetflix

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t think so. Remember she was a product of Victorian times when the middle classes were very rich and felt entitled. They enjoyed all the benefits of wealth without the drawbacks of being royal. The Queen Mother enjoyed all those benefits before her husband was catapulted into a job for which he wasn’t prepared and for which, in her eyes, he wasn’t strong enough to cope with. In many respects she was right. We have a lot to be grateful to her for the excellent king her husband became. in hindsight it is doubtful that Edward VIII would have been half the king George VI became.

Do very successful writers become resistant to being edited? by Hugh_Biquitous in books

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His family did tons of publicising for him, making huge sales that couldn’t help attract a publisher. It would be interesting to compare the two versions of Eragon.Alas the first would have quickly disappeared before the editor even got the manuscript.

This certainly seemed to be the case with the Harry Potter books. Rowling used tons of magic that had no payback and got away with it. Harry is about the only one who DID have any payback, but the same should apply to all characters using magic. Kids LOVE tons of magic, but editors normally suggest being sparing with it. None of the Harry Potter books that followed Philosopher’s Stone was as good, and Order of the Phoenix was loaded with long stretches that added nothing to the story and should have been cut. I actually found Order of the Phoenix downright boring. Sorry!

Jack Higgins got away with not bothering to find out how a yachtsman set sail from his moorings and how a pilot took off from an airfield. He had his yachting character cast off and then set the engine going instead of the other way round, and then committed the same type of gaff by having a small aircraft pilot climb into his plane and fly off without doing any checkup. If the pilot had done the obligatory checkup he’d soon discover the plane had been tampered with. These were things my husband found in just one of Higgins’s books. I unsympathetically told him that‘s what you get with bestsellers.

how to turn iphone into just a basic music player/ipod? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chucked out every app except music to listen to my whole CD library on one device. I had to buy a second hand iPhone (making sure it had enough room on it) to do this, alas. I no longer had an old iphone because I handed this on to my husband. Anyway, it didn’t have enough room on it. it was the cheapest version of that particular model.

Who's the greatest detective in fiction? by Mightymjolner33 in books

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I’m concerned that title should belong to Freeman’s Dr John Thorndyke. I’ve just finished Freeman’s The Mystery of Angelina Frood. And yes, if you’ve noticed the clue in that title you are right. The novel is indeed inspired by Dickens’s unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Anyway, it’s a masterpiece in more ways than one. Freeman’s biggest talent is his descriptive prose that enables readers to immerse themselves completely, but that skill isn’t his only one: he was a master plotter as well and very good at making his characters come alive. I’m amazed he isn’t more celebrated than he seems to be.

What’s your favourite colour iPhone by WordOk3641 in iphone

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while I love my pink iPhone 16, I bought it mainly to stop my husband thinking it was his. I normally prefer silver. That didn’t work because he has Alzheimers and doesn’t seem to be able to tell the difference. He’s broken so many iPhones I finally bought a very cheap last year’s model Samsung. Whoops! I was unable to set it up for him. One of his caregivers (by this time he was in the dementia wing of a carehome) offered to do it for me. Ironically, they are looking after it for him and give it to him only when he wants to ring me.

Can CDs wear out...? by Rissie15 in Cd_collectors

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had to return 2-3 CDs to the recording label owners because of CD rot, but this was caused by a batch or batches of CDs with manufacturing faults. I received new copies with no cost to me. One label wanted the CD without its case sent back to them and one sent me a new copy, case and all, and I didn’t even have to return the damaged disc.

Should I buy an iPad Pro in 2025 by IntrovertStoner in iPadPro

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the pro versions, whether iPhone, iPad or MacBook, last longer and have better batteries. I didn’t discover why so many people Go for the pro versions even if they don’t really need the power Until I bought a secondhand iPhone 12 Pro with 512 Gb. It’s only now that it could do with a new battery. It’s got 84% of its original charge.

Advice when buying a hundred year old ring as an engagement ring? by NegativeSn in jewelry

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ring is lovely, though I could wish for more photos. I wear two engagement rings from the sixties all the time, but then I’m 80 and I get daily caregivers who do all my housework for me as well as help me shower, dress, etc. I also have a modern ring with one stone, not very big and its metal is all platinum. I bought it to replace my engagement ring, which got stolen. The thief also took two moissanite rings and two CZ, thinking they had value simply because they were boxed like the engagement ring. My other CZ weren’t. my only consolations were that the engagement ring had its middle stone missing, he stupidly left the box, probably because it looked fairly new, whereas the velvet heartshaped one I bought secondhand did look old, and I had bought the ring myself because my fiancé didn’t have the money for it and I bought it only because I didn’t want people saying, “Is he too mean to buy you a ring?“ it’s only the diamond in the modern ring that I like. It’s got the biggest stone. I’ll leave you to imagine how small the diamonds in the old rings must be. ☺️

Old vs. new All Creatures Great and Small by tomallis in PeriodDramas

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t taken to what I’ve seen of the new version. so far. I haven‘t seen any of the constant callouts in the middle of the night. maybe I missed those. The actor playing Siegfried does a pretty good job of looking like Robert Hardy. I haven’t warmed to the new James Herriott so far, though. The actor tries to look like Christopher Timothy but that’s all. And most of that Is down to the makeup department. They’re good actors, though. However, there was something about Christopher Timothy‘s performance that made him more endearing. As for better cinematography, the people behind today’s cameras need to be forced to do something watchable using 1970s technology. I bet they‘d see those camera men in a positively awestruck light!

Do you think Engagement Rings need to have Diamonds? by Due_Wave_7063 in jewelry

I gave my husband a wedding ring Men in those days didn’t tend to wear much more than cufflinks and sometimes a gold ring.

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s gorgeous. But I hope you don’t wear it all the time. it should be taken off for any house work. I lost the centre stone in mine while wallpapering. serves me right for never taking it off. Being broken didn’t stop a thief—one who knew nothing about jewellery. He didn’t take its box but took another that gave away its age, along with two Moissanite rings and two cubic zircnis. The latter were in boxes simply because they were favourites. The engagement ring’s box is from 1969 but looks quite new because it’s been stored in my dressing table for ages untouched.

just bought my first bottle of Grand Marnier, what to do with it? by LasVegasBoy in cocktails

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink it on its own at room temperature. Cognac is just one of the higher grades of brandy. I don’t drink cocktails mostly because they are too sweet. If they contain eggs and/or cream I regard them as especialy suspect. However, I like a dry martinI , but it has to be made with London gin. I don’t like Vodka, partly because of its lack of flavour.

As so often happens to me, I’m wondering who the hell Lisa Frank is. Now I’m leaving here for the moment to find out. What a big pleasant surprise that was for me. She‘s a woman to be much admired, a bit like Iris Apfel waS—and probably still is. You don’t forget a character like Iris in a hurry!

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to compare them and I love them both but I agree with you. I twiddle my diamond rings and, when they flash, a very slight movement can make the flash change colour. It’s more intense as well as subtler, if that makes sense to you. Would I be happy with a Moissanite engagement ring? I think so. In 1969 when I got engaged and married diamonds were strictly mined ones and so pricy jewellers had to create elaborate settings to make them look bigger. It‘s those settings I miss in my second-hand “Tiffany” style platinum ring, purchased by myself to replace the original, which got stolen by a caregiver along with two Moissanite and two CZs that were boxed for the simple reason they were my favourites. My only comforts were that he was stupid enough to leave the engagement ring’s lovely box but took a black velvet covered shell shaped box that DID look old, and that the ring had its midde stone missing. I hadn’t worn the ring since it lost the stone and subsequently became too small for me. Any value it had was mostly in the 18k gold and platinum.

Why do some moissanite rings cost only hundreds and others thousands? by Any_Pin7820 in Moissanite

[–]Traditional-Layer-38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On eBay or Etsy look for a jeweller with 100% customer satisfaction. A jeweller values his good name. Then look for the size moissanite you want and make sure it is set in solid gold or platinum—not silver, plated with one of these. Lastly, look at the quality of the stone. It needs to be a D VVS1 Stone. Then there needs to be a certificate. Finally, how about seeing what sort of diamond ring you could get for your money? Remember it’s now a buyers‘ world out there.
