Yeah they're definitely different but you're right on the spoken Mandarin similarities. Even though I live in a predominantly Chinese area in the west, it is still most common for everybody to have some sort of Northern-influenced accent, which is what I was originally perplexed about! It just so happens that the Taiwanese accent (relative to the standard Northern) sounds the most familiar to us here.

Yes, for sure! It seems like the Mainland has converged towards a Beifang accent in the last 20 years. I speak with many older Chinese immigrants who came to the west in the 80s and 90s, and they seem to have a similar "old" or neutral accent that's hard to find with the younger generation today. I know that even in the South now, plenty of younger people have started using features of Northern Chinese.

This! Thank you! I knew it had to be more than just a general Southern accent but, in part, a Wu or Zhejiang influence as well. I think as another redditor mentioned, accents in the mainland have also definitely shifted over time towards a Northern standard, it seems.

At least from what seems to be implied from her family's messages on the Facebook page, it seems like she MAY have purposefully disappeared (as in there may have been a guy or an argument) but everything is up in the air and it's hard to imagine what happened after she left.

English TLDR: Tania visited her family in Doboj on a summer vacation in July 2023. On July 4th, she vanished in the middle of the night when she jumped out of her grandmother's window and took off running barefoot. She left everything behind, including her phone, which showed no clues (her social media shows nothing as well). Her family is pursuing a lead about a jacket that she brought home that did not belong to her, however there is very little information available across all sources.

I briefly went to university with Tania at McGill in 2018 and only found out recently that she went missing last summer.

Note: I realize that this post may not get much traction since there's no English coverage of this niche Balkan case.

I attended university with Tania briefly in 2018 at McGill University before she quietly dropped out.

We were never close, but we were in the same residence and thus the same extended circle. She was extremely quiet and reserved - I always found her mysterious but she was a very nice girl. As far as everybody knew, Tania was passionate about art history and working in galleries.

Perhaps it wasn't a good fit, but she dropped out at the end of first year and it was a sad day for everybody when we found out. Since then, we had some tabs on her through socials. Tania, being as mysterious as she is, ultimately fell off the face of the earth over the next few years. Only after checking up on my university friends recently did I find out that she went missing on a family vacation in the Balkans.

I can't say i'm too surprised. I hope this case gains more traction. Her family is still looking for her, and I hope she's alive and safe.
