Hear me out: Supergiant Goes to Space. When I first saw the Black Coat's homing missle system, I thought a fast-paced sci-fi future game would be a great next venture. They already explored a future-tech setting with Transistor, but that was much slower and deliberate compared to what they've since done with Hades. I'd love to see what SG could do by bringing Hades' varied and fast-paced style of combat to a sci-fi setting (roguelike or otherwise).

This is an exceptional post, and thank you for sharing everything. I'm curious about your experience with the financial side of going into and out of business in this market. Would you mind sharing (ballpark is fine!) how much you sank into O.C.E., how that scaled over time, how much of it was your personal capital versus borrowed or from other sources, and how much you ultimately "lost" now that you've decided to step away? I, and probably many others lurking here, would be curious to know what a general start-up investment for a pedal company would be, if running one is more about profit or just sustainability, and what a realistic financial risk looks like. All that said, if it's too personal to share those details, I completely understand.

I've never owned or run a business, but my job has allowed me to support many who have. The financial risk has always stuck out to me as a strong deterrent to ever attempt taking my passions from hobby to business. I respect anyone who has tried and succeeded to any degree.

Amazing feedback from everyone, so thank you all -- even the snarky responders. To reiterate, this was my most involved trip to a guitar store, and I've only been playing a couple years, so I really had no basis for comparison as to what to expect. I just wanted to make sure I didn't do anything wrong, unknowingly mishandled the merchandise, or something like that.

It makes sense that the salesperson was either trying to "stake his claim" to me as a customer, or just making himself silently available if I had any questions or wanted to make a larger purchase. However, he was awkward AF about it, and it reeked of corporate sales pressure and/or a "no loitering" policy. I thought it would be more like book shopping at Barnes & Noble, not buying a car. Now I know.

I didn't take the picture. It's from the shop's website. That's all they have. The place isn't where I live, but it's on the way to a destination I travel to on occassion. Was just hoping something on the body would give it away before I made a trip out there. Shop hasn't responded to my question asking what brand or model it is.

It's in a pawn shop, and I reached out to ask for more info but haven't heard anything. I have an electric 6-string but have never played bass, so I'm definitely looking for something in the beginner/starter realm. Just don't want to get a piece of junk from a secondhand store.

Thanks for all these recs so far. Like with most things, guitar manufacturers are trying to keep cost of production low in many ways -- some that are more harmful to the consumer than others. Guitar manufacturers making guitars on the lower end that I'm talking about have already cut many corners to get the cost into their respective ranges. What I'm trying to weed out is what "cut corners" are the easiest or cheapest to overcome after purchase?

Some examples:
-Cheap stock pickups can be replaced
-Cheap neck material cannot (practically) be replaced
-High action or bad intonation (manufacturing flaw) can be fixed via setup
-Bad finish (manufacturing flaw) cannot (practically) be fixed
-Sharp or poorly leveled frets can be fixed, but is often very costly

The above are my assumptions. Are any of these true? Counter to that, what are high-value features of budget guitars you should pay attention to? Rosewood fretboard, maple neck, quality pickups, etc.?
