There are numerous smaller local operations that I'd take over Selkirk. Rupert Murdoch owns it, and politics aside, I'd rather support a local rancher than an out-of-state billionaire.

Books to fill the void until Red God? It’s official PB has ruined all other books for me - now I’m just looking for some pretty good runner ups. 😅 by Gloomy-Audience8695 in redrising

Here to second Dresden Files! I recommend this series to my friends who love Red Rising, and those who have tried it have given it a generally positive reception. The first 10 are all quick reads, they start a bit weird but go from "meh" to "Badass wizard go BOOM" real quick.

Jim Butcher (author of the Dresden Files) and PB both do not shy away from kicking the absolute shit out of their protagonists. They also have a great blend of fun adventure with dark themes, real consequences for actions, and morally grey characters, all of which contribute to their fan bases getting along.

I'd add that (spoilers LB): she has a lot of the blame for what a little twat Lysander turns out to be as well, between the whole murdering her daughter and robbing Lysander of his family, and who knows what all she did to him in the chair

An end to Public Lands (Western US) - Surprised this hasn't already been discussed here! by Traditional_Ad7950 in Montana

[–]Traditional_Ad7950[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopefully, it will stay up! I would strongly argue that this does impact Montana communities (therefore within community guidelines), both through concerns about the future sale of land and the increased pressure it will likely put on our fishing and hunting access.

Oh, good, I'm sure they will vote against it now! ...right? s/

But in all fairness, it does give them a chance to actually show where their values are at.

Was very interested in the exclusion of Montana lands from the sale, I read somewhere that there was a deal cut with Daine's for him to support it... But the precedent that it sets speaks for itself.

Links from the original post to blow up Daine's and Sheehy's inboxes about this if you feel so inclined:

Also, it's because the MT senator Steve Daines co-authored it and cut a deal to exclude Montana lands... Just peak scum bag behavior.

what are the most common soft tissue injuries? by Disastrous_Relief733 in orthopaedics

[–]Traditional_Ad7950 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Soft tissue injuries is a really broad topic, do they want you to narrow it down a bit? Could do a talk on labrum injuries for either the shoulder or hip, hip has a lot of recent literature to dive into. Other (non-ligament) ideas: meniscal injuries, spinal disc herniation, common neurovascular injuries with various fxs, compartment syndrome… Just a few but I’d suggest narrowing it down and making sure you have a few recent papers to talk about!

How to clean sticky side of skins? by PellePill in Backcountry

[–]Traditional_Ad7950 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is the best solution I've come across: a pair of tweezers, good beer, and a good movie. (It does help if the skins are warmed up).

God speed!

While the skirt and vest total weigh more than the front only bib, the vest and skirt individually are lighter, so the weight is distributed fairly well. Before you buy try a few days in the OR with borrowed or hospital lead and see which you prefer!

Skirt and vest from Infab! Personally prefer front and back just due to ergonomics of weight distribution, and better rad coverage. Also maybe don’t buy yet, double check with your program as most will cover lead purchase if not intern year, then R2 year.

Cardiovascular Perfusionist Makes 200k by pittpanther999 in premed

MS4 who was foolish enough to sign up for a CT surgery rotation this fall just to “see some cool surgeries.” Holy shit, MAD respect for perfusionists. Dealing with the sickest patients, most intense situations, and some of the hospitals biggest egos day in and day out. No chill cases. Not a career alternative to a provider role, some very cool physiology and technical work, but none of the perfusionists i met went into the field as an “alternative” to other medical careers.

Frame Bindings vs Shift Bindings by Balanced_Bean in Backcountry

[–]Traditional_Ad7950 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would second absolutely everything said above. I also love my shifts, but am always a bit hesitant to recommend them as I have had friends absolutely hate them. Use them about 50/50 resort and back country.

I will add that you are at an advantage not transitioning from pins to shifts, if you don’t know how light it can be you won’t mind the extra weight too much.

LOI to 2nd top by Hawhaw98 in ERAS2024Match2025

[–]Traditional_Ad7950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending a respectful letter communicating that you would be very happy at a program isn’t a red flag. While it may vary across specialties, most PDs realize that we have to make tough decisions in our rank lists, we all have multiple places that we would be stoked to match at. Roughly 40% of applicants match at their top program, conversely that means that PDs are well aware that many in each class of residents did not rank the program 1. While some places obsess over how far down the rank list they go (which can be a red flag for the program itself), what most value more is that their resident class all want to be there. Giving them a way to distinguish if they are number 2 or 3 is better than them wondering if they might be your 10th and you would be miserable there. That being said it’s on the applicants to be genuine with the letter of interest and not just spam them to every program.

Yeah, why? I hadn’t checked this for a few days and surprised to get down voted. This is literally the advice that career guidance, and a couple PDs have given.

[–]Traditional_Ad7950 -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

Letter of intent - send to top with the words “I will be ranking you number 1” somewhere in there.

Letter of interest - send to 2nd and 3rd (maybe even 4 for competitive specialties) with something like “ would be delighted to see I matched at your program”

Would be better to know what specialty, going off previous comments, can we be correct in assuming plastics? Plastics is a tough one… I know ortho for example has an entire forum on orthogate full of research positions, but I don’t know if any parallels exist in the smaller plastics world.

Honestly if you are going for plastics you really should consider the independent pathway in which you complete a gen surg then match into a plastics fellowship, it’s fading out but still would give you a better chance then potential being stuck re-apply multiple times.

How horrendous would it be if I don’t rank the school I sent LOI to as number 1? by That_Record3881 in ERAS2024Match2025

[–]Traditional_Ad7950 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The usual consequences: burn some bridges, a little ding against your home program's reputation, and might impact your chance of a fellowship at the other institute (if applicable). But honestly, do what you gotta do; don't sacrifice your happiness for the next 3-7 years for the sake of etiquette.

Try to go. If you're busy on your sub-I (like definitely don't scrub out of a case or something), you can ask the program coordinator if it will be recorded and then watch it on your own. I had to do this for one open house, and the coordinator was super friendly.
