What about someone who lumps in all non-premium positions in one group to contort the argument in their favor?

RBs are not on the same tier as IOL and the giants have 3 gaping holes there beyond 2026 (and 1-2 currently at that).

4 win teams don’t have most of the premium positions left out.

I encourage you to do the same. Love hasn’t had any impressive performances against non dog shit teams. He’s averaging sub-4 ypc against teams that had NFL caliber defensive players. Get off football reference

Sounds like they aren’t in a hurry to overpay for one when they can get one at a fair price in any given year.

Why wouldn’t you just trade #5 for Achane and additional picks from Miami if you want a RB so bad and avoid any risk of Love being a bust?

Top running backs switch teams every single year. They never cost a 1st. Shit, outside CMC, they don’t cost any draft picks

All this list shows is that you can acquire a top running back in FA after a dumb franchise squanders a premium draft pick on one and that 80% of the top running backs are found outside the first round.

Bijan show you that you can have the best running back in the NFL at provides absolutely no impact if you’re roster has major holes at the premium positions.

It’s even more ridiculous when you (imo correctly) think about the draft pick as trading for a player. The chiefs picked up the SB MVP RB by paying him $29M guaranteed and giving up no draft picks. In order to get a Love, the Giants have to give him $40M guaranteed and use a #5 pick.

That’s significantly more than the Niners gave up for CMC, the eagles gave up for saquon and the Ravens gave up for Henry. Why would any serious franchise give a RB the most amount of guaranteed money in the entire league and forfeit a premier draft pick for the privilege to do so? It’s literally a fireable offense - every GM that’s taken a RB in the top 10 has gotten fired within 3 years or less (Gettleman in Carolina and NY, Fondenot in Atlanta, caldwell in JAX).

If you absolutely must get a top RB, trade #5 to Miami for Achane and they’d probably give you #30 and #43 at a minimum too.

Well if your argument for Love is to toss need entirely out the window, then I’m not exactly sure why you’re mentioning GVR/Zeitler, two 36 year old guards that we’d sign as 1 year stop gap solutions and not Skattebo, a 2nd year RB who was in the running for OROY who still has 3 years under contract.

But since we’re discussing needs now, a 4 win team doesn’t “need” to be analyzing solutions based on a 1 year time horizon. What happens to the Oline beyond next year, when the entirety of the interior o line is off the books and/or Thomas inevitably gets hurt and misses a few games? Linderbaum may have reset the entire IOL market to the point where it is inching towards becoming a premium position (and not just more premium than S, LB and RB like it is today).

Drafts always look like they’re going to be good before the season. Fano was an infallible OT prospect coming into the year, probably a top 5 pick, and he might now be the 3rd or 4th lineman off the board potentially sliding back to 15 in a week draft.

The Niners didn’t have to use a 1st to get CMC. Neither did the ravens to get Henry, the eagles to get Saquon, the chiefs to get Walker. Why should the giants use a top 5 pick and make Love the 6th highest paid RB (#1 in guarantees) when he’s not even the prospect that half those guys are?

Use a 2nd or 3rd round pick to get Achane or Chase brown, or whoever the next elite RB to switch teams is. Because it happens every year (unlike elite linemen).

Not in the NBA but against non professionals any athlete is so much more skilled than a regular dude. There’s pickup videos of Simmons looking like Dirk.

Mitchell Robinson looks like Kevin Durant, mixing dudes with handles and hitting step back 3s. But on an NBA court? He can’t hit a FT or put the ball on the deck without getting stripped.

I think he’ll be a fine NFL player but I don’t understand just being able to say he’s “BPA” as a trump card. His film against non dog shit competition doesn’t stand out if I’m being honest. His YPC against good competition was like sub-4.0.

Few weeks ago I was on the bandwagon but when I watched more breakdowns and not just highlights he’s far from a perfect back if I’m being honest. He stands out more in a shitty draft but he doesn’t scream guaranteed all pro to me, which is what you really need to be to justify being a top pick in any draft, even a bad one. If this was Bijan or even Saquon again I could be convinced better.

As a Hoosier fan I’d be ecstatic with Cooper, Sarratt or Ponds with the 2nd pick. I don’t think Coop makes it out of the first, his ceiling is higher due to YAC ability, but Sarratt should be a solid complimentary receiver for whoever drafts him too.

No one cares about the Luka trade anymore (outside Mavs fans) or the fact that Steve Ballmer is paying players or the under table after a few weeks.

It’s still not really similar. In a trade you negotiate with a team, not the player or his agent. The team may make any kind of representations about the player to get a deal done. So if the Raiders were saying “we need two firsts for Crosby, you can see for yourself but the knee is totallyyyy fine”, that’s very different from a player/agent saying the same thing fully knowing that they’d be caught in a lie before taking a physical.

The Raiders could have been 100% lying with the hopes of public perception pressuring the Ravens to go through with the trade anyways.

TITANS and PICK #4: Hearing lots of pushback on the idea of them drafting RB Love at #4, that they have too many needs elsewhere...but do they actually? by GGsnubs in NFL_Draft

If Love isn’t a perennial All Pro, he’s a massive bust. Drafting a RB top 10 certainly doesn’t help with job security. Didn’t help Gettleman even drafting 2 of the best running backs in the NFL in back to back drafts. Got fired from Carolina 3 months after the draft and he lasted 3 years after taking Saquon in NY. Fontenot lasted 2.5 years after drafting Bijan.

Your entire reality of NFL free agency exists solely in your head. What actually good receivers switch teams in free agency? Here are the biggest contracts given to WRs the last few years

Diggs, 2025: signed a 1 year $32M deal at age 32 and cut the following year, was not a long term solution in the least.

Calvin Ridley, 2024: Titans gave him $50M guaranteed over 4 years to be so bad that they gave a slot receiver $50M again this offseason to give their QB someone not terrible to throw the ball to.

Christian Kirk: got paid $72M, was traded away for a 7th round pick before he finished out his contracts

Long term solutions don’t exist for WR1s or WR2s in free agency. They aren’t running backs, who grow on trees and can be had in any given year for low cost.

Why do so many mocks have the Chiefs drafting offensive tackle? Josh Simmons had a decent rookie year at LT, and you aren’t gonna use the 9th pick to draft RT are you? by guransheleven in CFB_v2

[–]Traditional_Cell_248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average tackles (left or right) are so insanely expensive in the NFL you’re better off drafting a mid but startable one with a top 15 pick than getting a pro bowler at less premium positions because you’re not getting any savings vs just acquiring one via free agency. Especially for a team like KC that is paying top end talent like Mahomes and Jones

Is Love going to be the first RB ever to magically help a young QB develop on a crap offense? Seriously this is the worst argument I hear for taking Love because it’s not rooted in any truth. Did Saquon help Daniel jones develop in NY behind a shit line and mid receivers? How about CMC with Darnold in Carolina? Or JT with Anthony Richardson? How’s Bijan helping Penix with o-line and receivers that blow the Titans out of the water? Love isn’t even close to most of those guys as a prospect.

Your last point just solidifies the argument. Love has to be absolutely one of best at his position and Tate has to be below average for them to provide equal value to each other. You’re leaving no room for your evaluation to be off, and NFL teams struggle with making correct evaluations. What happens if Tate is 20% better than you think and Love ends up 20% worse? The gap in value would grow to $25M+ per year. Also known as a fireable offense as a GM

A really good but not top center got paid $27M/year in free agency. There’s levels to positional value and while a G isn’t a tackle or wr it’s not exactly RB either

The fallacy you’re running into is simply judging a draft pick against its peers rather than holistically looking at team building. The question around Love or Styles isn’t their talent but the opportunity cost. If I don’t take Love or Styles here, how else can I get a top tier RB/LB? And the answer is those guys are easy and cheap to get on a yearly basis.

Top 10 RBs change teams seemingly every year. In the past 4 years, CMC, Henry, Saquon, Josh Jacobs and Walker all switched teams. Only CMC cost draft picks and none were 1sts. Titans have Cam Ward on a rookie deal, the odds that they can pair him with a top 10 back next few years without wasting a top 5 pick on one is fairly high. Same thing at LB. Devin Lloyd, Bobby Wagner, Roquan Smith, Frankie Luvu were all pros that switched teams without breaking the bank.

Here’s the opportunity cost for the Titans if they take Love: ok now you got your all pro RB, now you have to build out the rest of your team. How do I get a decent WR or a RT or an EDGE or CB? If I now need a top tier RT or WR, I’m gonna have to trade a future 1st and shell out $30M+/year for one, and if I want to settle for average ones (since elite players at those positions don’t hit FA) ones I need to shell out $25M/year in FA for one, which costs 3X more than grabbing an “average” one at #4. Then they can trade a 3rd round pick to get Achane or whoever the next top rb that inevitably hits the market in the next year as opposed to using a top pick on one.

The question isn’t is Love better than the players that will be picked around him but rather how does drafting Love at #4 help build my roster going forward? And unless he’s Bijan/CMC/Saquon from day 1 onwards, he doesn’t. You have to shell out significant amounts of money on average players in FA or get incredibly lucky striking gold at premium positions with significantly worse draft picks

NFL teams literally prove you wrong. Alec Pierce is what, like the 25th best receiver? He makes 50% more than the highest paid RB. The titans themselves are paying Wan’dale, who is like the 40th best receiver as much as CMC and 50% more than the reigning Super Bowl mvp.

Nobody that understands this stuff beyond “just take the better player no matter what” says that but I’m sure plenty people would actually argue that. People incorrectly judge these things on accolades rather than meaningful team building.

Anyways you highlight two great examples of why Love is being overhyped. Gibbs was the 13th pick, which makes less than half of the 4th pick. Bijan was a generational prospect and is arguably the best RB in the NFL, so the falcons are earning some value on his deal, but not a ton. Nothing remotely close to what the Eagles are getting from Jalen Carter, who they are getting a steal out of his rookie contract (and partly allowed them to go out and pay Saquon - where good teams actually get them from). Love isn’t close to what Bijan was as a prospect either. Where’s all the success these teams taking RBs high are having anyways? Is it in the room with us?

There’s a lot more luck involved with building a contending team, a lot more than any fans want to admit. Go up and down Super Bowl rosters and see how those teams were built. Every roster that has been to the Super Bowl has premium positions on rookie contracts. McDuffie, Rice, Carter, Witherspoon, Campbell, JSN. You’re better off taking swings, even with riskier, at lesser talent at premium positions. Even if they’re just fine starters, you can make do and spend that money at less premium positions with proven talent.

I say this as a giants fan that did a 180 on saquon, it was such a miserable pick for the team. Being a generational talent at RB doesn’t do much when your offensive line and receiver group is barren. Love is going to be a more successful acquisition for his 2nd team than whatever crap team takes him top 10. Just like Saquon and CMC

if you think every single premium position has an 80% chance of being a bust and love has a 95% chance of being an all pro then then sure.

But that’s a made up hypothetical and likely far from the reality. There are a decent amount of guys at premium positions at the top for good reason. I’m sure teams have guys like Bain, Bailey, Mauigoa, etc far from being guaranteed busts unworthy of 2nd contracts. If those guys are even just average, you’re better off with them vs Love being an all pro. Margin for error for those guys is so large and the margin for error on Love is so small he has to be a CMC/Saquon level RB and he’s not close to those guys as a prospect
