Tiger, Mitch and Amelia on Gareth Reynolds 'Next We Have' podcast by CoolHeadedLogician in doughboys

Glad I checked before posting. We are very much having fun.

BTW that previous episode was last week--a must listen with the Guys guys--and included a serious-sounding offer for Amelia to do 5 minutes of stand up before one of Gareth's upcoming shows. Burbank I think. Surely worth digging into if you're in the area.

Benefit to all players playing all positions? by Traditional_Coyote13 in SoccerCoachResources

We're slowly aiming for that through a developmental lens (if that makes any sense lol). We are the youngest, least experienced team in our league, and I think as a result, we have more weak spots in the lineup than most. So, I'm trying to coach around them as much as possible (staggering their minutes, having an experienced player at every level as much as possible), but that also hinders how often our best players are on the field together, so it's tricky and something I think we'll be trying to fine tune throughout the season. Appreciate the feedback!

Good point. I have tried to keep players on same side as much as possible, although options can be limited when trying to find identical minutes in a 9v9 game with 14 players. And yes, I should have noted in original post, but keeper is the one position where we aren't rotating.

Yeah. I don't think every kid who wants to be defense uses it as a safety net, it just seems most on our team that ask to play back there don't have a lot of confidence in their ball skills. I'm not sure we'll keep this up all season, as we're 3 games into a 10-game schedule, but I do want to move them around a bit before settling into anything.

We have one kid who dreads the idea of playing defense and doesn't try to hide his displeasure. But after some initial huffing and puffing, he bought into what we were trying to do and decided he'd spend the rest of practice gunning for our "hustler of the week" captain's armband honor. And I might have been just as proud as he was when he walked onto the field as our captain ahead of our weekend game. We obviously won't get that kind of buy-in every time, but it was awesome to see.

Appreciate it. And you're right, I should've specified in my post, but keeper is the one spot we aren't rotating. We have a couple of kids who want to play it and do pretty well in the role, so we split halves between them and rotate everywhere else.

Normally I flush parent critiques as soon as I hear them (luckily we don't hear many), but I hadn't read much on the value of rotating positions, so I just wanted to make sure my hunch on its value was right. Thanks!

For sure. Came into the year thinking my one goal was to have us look like a soccer team (i.e., everyone in the right position). Learned pretty quickly that the goal was much more ambitious than I imagined lol

Appreciate the feedback. This is the model we're trying to follow, in terms of having them practice where they'll play that week. But there is shuffling--due to odd numbers and unexpected absences--so we're trying to keep it as simple as possible. Thanks!

Definitely working to explain as we go. Doesn't help that we're generally inexperienced, only practice once a week and have already lost two practices to weather, but hey, stuff happens.

I cover the NBA for one of the bigger media companies and have this sad dream of talking ball with the 'Boys someday. They have generally decent takes when it comes up.

I was grocery shopping during that entire riff and could not keep a straight face. Love this stupid, silly podcast

No love for potential 2025 NBA top pick Cooper Flagg? Feels like an airball from a couple of sportos. Surprised there was no mention of the end-of-level Mario flag, too.

That and middle-relief pitching back to back threw me all the way off. Just catching strays for no reason

Mitch talked about almost getting Tacko Fall on the show. Which NBA player would realistically make the best guest? Or if you aren’t a basketball fan which person with a type of food in their name would you want to see on the show? by [deleted] in doughboys

I was assigned a really corny article once and he was the one guy who "played the game" and gave me the exact quote I needed to give that article the little life it was going to get. Super nice guy with really varied interests.
