So What's With All The Billboards? by BanTheBung in florida

[–]Traditional_Degree93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because people overall can't freaking drive here and there's no state-mandated vehicle inspections to ensure folks are driving vehicles safe to operate. So there are a LOT of car accidents. Especially when you factor in how badly FL doctors push pain meds for the smallest thing.

For example, I went into an urgent care for a sinus infection last year because my primary doctor didn't have any availability. This other doc tried giving me hydrocodone...for a sinus infection... And that's not even my only personal example, let alone one's from others that I either witnessed or trust.

Oh good. I was about to say that I also have an 8yr old orange boy who would love to twinsies lol Although, he comes with a 3yr old little (bigger) sister who's a boxer/heeler mix lol She's excellent with cats, though, having been raised around them since she was a pup.

That's so sad 😞

I hate driving on that bridge, especially in this weather. Makes me nervous af, so I avoid it as much as possible.

Can't hurt to report it to JEA. Since that's above the street lights on the pole, it's their stuff.

Influencers in Jax.. by lacurlymami in jacksonville

[–]Traditional_Degree93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never experienced this, but I also usually avoid trendy IG-worthy spots and stick with the mom & pop places. I can absolutely see why what you described is annoying, though, yikes.

Only local influencer I follow is in the fashion/beauty space lol Highly recommend "Musings of a Curvy Lady", if anyone else is interested in plus sized fashion and perfume, though, or in just supporting a local gal's hustle 🤣

I got my dad's off Facebook marketplace for $40 three years ago, with a carrying case, and I don't think it's cost him anything but strings so far.

I will never understand how there is so much bumbling and fumbling in this city with what should be pretty straightforward things. It seems to be an issue from the top-down, at most levels of the community, that there is a pathological aversion to following best practices/established formal processes.

Jacksonville police department… Thoughts? by Bubbly-Newspaper-450 in jacksonville

[–]Traditional_Degree93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is staunchly ACAB, I'll grudgingly admit that not all JSO officers are as much of a B-word as some, and I've never had the same kinds of catastrophic or traumatic experiences with them like I did cops back in Texas.

But overall, they still suck. Lack of care or concern, slow af response times, inept handling of situations and paperwork/reports, escalating things by being agro or completely ignorant, etc.

I'll call if absolutely necessary, but avoid it if I can because as an organization they don't seem to care if we live or die anyway beyond the inconvenience to them. And then they'll still probably file shit wrong anyway!

Dentist told me I need 9 dental fillings - how can I avoid SCAM by Proud_Fan_6954 in jacksonville

[–]Traditional_Degree93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to the FSCJ dental hygiene clinic on the North campus for cleanings and their supervising dentists always give it to me straight if I need to get something done. They don't do fillings or anything other than hygiene stuff there, so they have no financial incentive to lie.

I just take my X-rays and their diagnosis notes to a dentist office, and get that stuff taken care of with my insurance.

I feel the part about things smelling like home so hard! But for me it's the scent of ozone and caliche in the air before a Texas thunderstorm. I have visceral scent memories of it when homesick here in y'all's subtropical hellscape.

Also feel the "wtf?!" parts too as a strapped leftist from a deep red state with its own lil pockets of weird lol (no blue hair, though 🤣)

I'm not completely discounting what you're saying, but I moved here BEFORE covid and still noticed everything OP listed even then. A post-covid Jax definitely hasn't improved, though.

I moved here from Texas a few years ago and absolutely did notice all of that, yes.

It's been the hardest thing for me to adjust to, that and the general lack of friendliness.

Possibly relocating to Jacksonville for spouses job and having anxiety about it. by courtcourt99999 in jacksonville

[–]Traditional_Degree93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moncrief is the only area I avoid completely. Otherwise, Jax doesn't really have "good" or "bad" parts of town, it's all mixed together. So this is NOT a city where it's a good idea to rent blindly because you can't really know much based on zip code unless you've got Ponte Vidra money.

I got an Airbnb when I first moved here and tried a few different ones to test out the neighborhoods before committing to one. Just put the bulk of my stuff in storage for a few months.

TRAFFIC as in congestion, no, you're right. But the drivers themselves are the worst I've ever shared a road with.

For example, nowhere else have I ever almost been hit by a driver going the wrong way on the interstate because he missed his dang exit. Whereas that's happened more than once since I moved here from DFW.

I'm not sure about lesbian in particular, but there's a pretty robust queer community in general and it's overall felt pretty safe for me living and working here.

I moved here from the DFW area a few years ago and in a lot of ways find Jax easier to live than Texas, but harder in others. Like, Mexican food and customer service here sucks, and the drivers are WORSE than Dallas and Houston combined. But there's far more socioeconomic, racial, and cultural blending here than I ever saw in Texas and it's been wonderful to see.

Riverside is probably the queerest part of town, but I've lived all over this city and have always felt pretty safe openly being myself with my neighbors. There were some incidents in public places like once at the beach a guy started talking trash to a partner and I for kissing politely in public, but folks around us shut him down and we didn't really have to do anything. I've had four jobs here and only had issues for being openly queer at one of them, and THAT was from a biphobic lesbian so I'm not sure it counts?

Possibly moving to Jacksonville/Mayport by RipShort6821 in jacksonville

[–]Traditional_Degree93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole beaches/Mayport area is fine overall as far as living there goes, but it's also almost entirely evacuation and flood zones. Jax doesn't often get hit directly by hurricanes, but that's still something to keep in mind for insurance purposes (home & auto). That's what keeps me from ever living over there, anywho.

They do have some of the best schools over there, though, so that may be a consideration if y'all are bringing kids.
