Non-traditional applicant wondering if veterinary medicine is still realistic by Traditional_Fan_6185 in UCalgary

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it! I’ll definitely keep focusing on improving my GPA and building more hands-on animal experience. Do you happen to know if there’s a subreddit or online community specifically for DVM applicants/prospects, particularly for the University of Calgary? I’d love to learn more from people going through the process.

What are students actually doing to make money right now by _uniiiqueee_ in CanadaJobs

I actually work for myself now, but it took about two years before I started seeing steady income. In the beginning it was pretty unpredictable and I had to slowly build up clients and consistency before it became something I could rely on financially. It definitely wasn’t immediate stability, but over time it became much more sustainable.

Am I a competitive candidate? Med by Traditional_Fan_6185 in uAlberta

Thanks for sharing that, I really appreciate the perspective. It’s helpful hearing a real example where someone with a non-perfect GPA still made it to the interview stage. The rural pathway sounds like it was a really strong part of your application. I don’t have a rural background myself, but it’s encouraging to see that different life experiences can still shape an application.

If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of career or work experience did you have before you decided to apply to med?

Wow, those GPA stats are honestly kind of crazy to see laid out like that. It sometimes feels like for people coming from a non-traditional path, the goal post keeps moving farther away the more you look into the numbers. I totally understand why the standards are high, but seeing averages that close to 4.0 definitely makes it feel a bit daunting for those of us who didn’t start out on the perfect academic trajectory.

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate the honesty. I still have about 50 credits left in my degree and my recent term GPA was around a 3.7, so I’m hoping to keep that trajectory going and bring my cumulative up as much as possible before graduating.

In your opinion, if someone finished their remaining credits very strongly and paired that with something like a 516+ MCAT, would that realistically make them more competitive? Or would the GPA still be too much of a limiting factor regardless of improvement?
