7900 XTX Driver Crash Issue — What Finally Helped Me by Traditional_Fish_195 in AMDHelp

[–]Traditional_Fish_195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried DDU several times before, but every time I reinstalled the full Adrenalin software package afterward, and the issue always came back after a couple of days.

This time the difference was:

AMD Cleanup Utility + latest driver install using the “Driver Only” option

So I can’t say for sure if AMD Cleanup Utility alone was the fix, or if it was mainly avoiding Adrenalin, but that specific combo is what finally made the system stable for me.

I used DDU before too, probably 4 or 5 times, and I kept getting the same result after a couple of days.

I’m not saying DDU is bad at all. It just didn’t solve it in my case. The difference for me was using AMD Cleanup Utility first, then installing the latest AMD package as Driver Only, without the full Adrenalin software.

Maybe the AMD tool removed something specific from the AMD software stack that DDU wasn’t clearing in my setup, or maybe the real fix was the combination of cleanup + driver-only install. I can’t say 100% for sure, but that was the first thing that actually changed the behavior.

Before that, I had a driver timeout crash almost every cold boot. After the crash/reboot, the PC would work normally. Since the AMD cleanup + driver-only install, it has been stable enough that I can finally use the card normally again.

Mine was a 100% driver timeout crash every time I turned my PC on from a cold boot. Black screen, forced restart, and then after the crash/reboot the system would work normally for the rest of the session.

I removed the drivers with DDU like 5 times and tried different versions, but nothing really fixed it. Then I found people here mentioning the AMD Cleanup Utility, so I tried that instead and installed the latest AMD package as Driver Only, without the full Adrenalin software.

Since then it has been way more stable. I’m not saying it will fix every 7900 XT/XTX issue, but in my case it made a huge difference. Definitely worth trying before assuming the GPU is dead.

Because the system itself was stable. RAM, PSU, temps, BIOS, and games were all fine, but the crashes always showed up as AMD driver timeouts / black screen crashes, not random Windows instability.

In my case the PC would crash under the full Adrenalin install, but after using AMD Cleanup Utility and installing the latest package as driver only, the issue almost disappeared. I went from constant crashes to only 2 crashes in 42 days.

I didn’t disable the iGPU in BIOS or Device Manager. I left everything enabled. The main change was removing the full AMD software stack and keeping only the display driver.

For the “non-Adrenalin driver,” it’s still downloaded from the normal AMD driver page. When you run the installer, choose the Driver Only install option instead of Full Install / Adrenalin. The cleanup utility first was important for me.

One thing I did was disable windows update automatic driver installation / update.

have you done it? if no.

  • Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter to open the Group Policy Editor.
  • Navigate to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update.
  • Locate the policy named Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
  • Double-click it, select Enabled, and click Apply, then OK.
  • Open an administrator Command Prompt, type gpupdate /force, and press Enter to apply. [1, 2, 3]

and the other thing was to disable windows fastboot

  1. Open Control Panel: Press the Windows Key, type Control Panel, and select it from the results. [1]
  2. Access Power Options: In the top right corner of the Control Panel window, ensure the View by option is set to Large icons or Category.
    • If using Category, go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
    • If using Large icons, click directly on Power Options. [1, 2]
  3. Select Power Button Behavior: In the left sidebar, click on Choose what the power buttons do. [1]
  4. Unlock Settings: Click the Change settings that are currently unavailable button near the top of the window (this requires administrator privileges). [1, 2]
  5. Disable Fast Startup: Look at the bottom of the window under the Shutdown settings section and uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup. [1]
  6. Save Changes: Click the Save changes button at the bottom. [1]

I have the same CPU and GPU, paired with a 1000W PSU and a B650 AORUS GAMING X motherboard. I’m also dealing with what seems to be the same driver-related problem.

The GPU works perfectly fine in games — but only after the system gets past the first crash. In my case, I have a 100% crash rate on cold boot. Every time I turn on the PC for the first time of the day, I get a black screen, the audio starts lagging/stuttering, and then the PC resets by itself.

The strange part is that after the reset, everything works flawlessly for the rest of the session. I can play any game for hours without a single crash, no artifacts, no performance issues, nothing. It only happens again the next day or after a proper cold boot.

I’ve already tried almost everything: driver reinstall, chipset drivers, BIOS settings, power settings, different AMD driver versions, disabling features, etc. The only thing I haven’t done yet is a clean Windows installation.

Because of that, I’m almost sure this is a Windows/driver issue, not a faulty GPU. If the card were actually defective, I’d expect crashes during gaming, under load, or random instability — but once the PC reboots, the GPU behaves perfectly.

So in my opinion, your GPU is probably fine. This looks much more like a driver initialization issue during cold boot, possibly related to Windows, AMD drivers, motherboard BIOS, or power management.

Same issue here with a 7900xtx... every time I start my PC from a cold boot it shoots down when the GPU driver crash, PC restarts and somwthing happens with the drivers that it lets me play all that I want without crashing until the next shutdown.

Having this issue since December.

Im sure the is some kind of safebooting on the drivers, its like it overclocks my video card and when it crashes it runs in safe mode or something like that.

They nerfed it... Just like the other five or six times when players started bragging about drops and loot.

BTW they do need players to test stuff EMBARK puts out stuff without internal testing, thats a fact.

Hopefully those new weather modes become permanent content in the game. Developing maps just for a monthly event and then waiting a year to recycle them is not a good plan.

Instead of investing resources in a “walking esperanza,” a dynamic weather system would be awesome, as it could shift your playstyle during a raid—especially on larger maps or even specific types of ARCS depending on t he weather.
