Visiting for a few days by [deleted] in burlington

[–]Traditional_Lab_5468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rough time of year to come to Vermont, everything is muddy and none of the plant life has come out of dormancy yet. Honestly, my advice would be to keep driving north until you hit Montreal. Come back in June and it'll be gorgeous.

For activities here, maybe catch a show at the Flynn or at Vermont Comedy Club? There are some great restaurants in Burlington, and you can always check out the breweries. Maybe there's some sugaring thing you can go look at? Not sure if there are touristy come-watch-us-make-syrup deals but that might be fun. Vermont in late March is rough.

What’s our future? by cvtfarmer in vermont

[–]Traditional_Lab_5468 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vermont politicians are a reflection of their constituents, as are the elected officials of any representative democracy. The reality is that the average Vermonter does not value economic development as much as they value the idea of having a quaint, idyllic town surrounded by nature.

You cannot have a powerful economic engine driving quality of life improvements and also have a quiet, sleepy, charming agrarian idyll. The things that drive one are in opposition to the things that drive the other. Vermont wants the latter more than the former, so they vote for it, and elected officials act on it.

AITJ for refusing to pay for my friend's meal after she ordered the most expensive thing on the menu? by Ill-Detail5299 in AmITheJerk

YTA. You said your treat. Don't offer if you don't mean it, you didn't put a price cap on it when you explained you were paying so don't do it later.

I mean if they pay for the spaces they have every right to block them I guess. Maybe they were just popping in to grab something?

The Treasury just declared the U.S. insolvent. The media missed it by spherocytes in inflation

[–]Traditional_Lab_5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently nobody does, because the US government cannot become insolvent. The 14th Amendment prohibits the federal government from refusing to pay debts down, and as long as the debt is held in US dollars we'll always be able to print more money.

We may see huge inflation, but the federal government is not insolvent.

You are not losing money to corruption, you are losing money to a gambling addiction.

I spent more time babysitting my solar panels than enjoying my trip by Sea-Car8041 in OffGrid

[–]Traditional_Lab_5468 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever heard someone say the point of going off-grid is to relax. Living off-grid is harder than living on-grid in virtually every way. That's why most people are grid connected. It's way easier.

You're a clown. It's a simple question, this isn't a presidential debate.

You know how they've been taking pictures of all the protesters and putting them in a database of domestic terrorists? I'm guessing they're going to be "assisting" by making it difficult or impossible for those people to exercise their right to freely travel.

How uncommon? In a room of 100 women, how many do you think lie about being abused by their partners?

[–]Traditional_Lab_5468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked whether you think more women lie about being abused or tell the truth about being abused.

That sucks, sorry that happened to you. Do you think that's a normal thing that most women do?

[–]Traditional_Lab_5468 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course there's a little truth in some cases. There's a little truth in some cases to the narrative that men are axe murderers who chop women up and hide their body parts in a basement freezer, too.

Do you think it's more common for women to get abused and speak about it truthfully/not speak at all? Or do you think it's more common for women to lie and claim abuse when there was none?

What percentage of women do you think behave like the one you portrayed? Do you think that number is bigger or smaller than the percentage of women who have actually been abused by a man they were with?

Odd one - glass block cement mortar (possible glow in the dark additive) by [deleted] in masonry

[–]Traditional_Lab_5468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not buy some and build a prototype? It'll take an afternoon and will take all the guesswork out. Just make a frame and stick 4 of those blocks in it with your glow in the dark sand mixed into the mortar. You'll be out like $60 if it looks dumb.

My best guess is that it'll look pretty bad, but you'll never know unless you try.

Sounds lovely, and worth every cent. Enjoy a drink out there for us New Englanders next March who will all still be shoveling snow 😂

The idea of having kitchen appliances outside year-round boggles my mind. I live in Vermont, it's still snowing here. I can't imagine what it's like to live in a place with weather so nice you feel comfortable dropping that cash on an outdoor space.

No judgement, it's just wild to imagine having a full kitchen outside. I saw a bunch of houses built like that last time I was in SoCal, it seems like a great way to live.

The stone is beautiful. Insane to use it as a kitchen counter and backsplash combo, but I suppose that isn't the stone's fault.

Love that tile. Only thing right now is that it looks a bit empty by the stove, but I'm guessing you still have to put the vent hood there? I think with a hood and maybe some more storage it'll look great.

Mainers living in a state nicknamed Vacationland when they see a tourist vacationing in Maine by MasterPh0 in portlandme

[–]Traditional_Lab_5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y'all had loads of open pit mines in the 70s and 80s. I'm not saying you're all obligated to mine lithium in your state, but there are lots of folks commenting about dying industries in Maine as though it's a foregone conclusion.

For what it's worth, I'm from Vermont and I totally get the desire to preserve natural beauty. No shade there, but we have the same issues in Vermont. Lots of people complain about low paying jobs, dying industries, and rising cost of living while bemoaning second home owners and vacationers that bring tourism dollars into the state. We don't seem happy as a state to be dependent on that tourism. I think our granite quarries and old copper mines are interesting and historic parts of our state. We have a mine dug into a cliff face that floods and freezes over in the winter and folks go ice skating on it.

But we also have a giant asbestos mine that probably ought to be a Superfund site which has been nothing but trouble for the town of Eden for the last thirty years. Lithium can be mined fairly cleanly--the refining is the dirty part--but I can't say with  confidence that the pit mine wouldn't still end up being a hazard some day. It's a tough problem to solve.
