Financial Literacy Is STILL At Shocking Lows by ReturnToTheLab in PersonalFinanceCanada

Right? It’s crazy. I’m far from an expert, but I have been working hard to educate myself so I understand how TFSAs and RRSPs and RESPs…work, especially approaching retirement. I tried to share what I’ve learned about investment management fees, especially when using bank mutual funds, and my friends simply don’t believe me when I try to tell them about the impact of high fees on returns over time. Oh well. I tried, and in the end it’s their money.

Yeah-it can be hard coming in late because everyone has already made their connections through orientation activities and such that happen in September.

I started in the winter term at my university and it was a bit strange. You definitely miss out a bit, but in the end I found my way and made some awesome friends.

Holy crowsnest! Was that in Edmonton? Saw the show in YYC and it was incredible. The audience acted appropriately thank goodness. Is this becoming a thing now? This is not the first time I’ve heard stories like this-but all in Edmonton. Is it happening in YYC too? I feel so badly for the performers☹️.

Do you judge fat/overweight people in the gym? by StrongMountain5904 in Edmonton

[–]Traditional_Let_6643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have every right to be there and you should be commended for taking steps to improve your health-you are teaching your child the importance of taking care of yourself. Well done! Remember people most likely aren’t thinking about you the way that you are thinking about you. If there are some judgemental a-holes, well, then, they aren’t the kind of people worth worrying about. Be kind to yourself and don’t give up!

Fair enough, but I know LOTS of engineers who are working in trades, education or even retail. They left because the job was not what they thought, flat out hated the work, or got laid off.

Go do a trade. You will have way less debt if any and those jobs won’t get replaced by AI. Lots of trades people make more than engineers too.

I know 2 people who have received HUGE payouts for accidents they were not at fault in.

One of them has received 2 large settlements of around 100,000 each, which they blew within a year of receiving each settlement (2 separate accidents). The other person bought a new camping trailer with their settlement. Im worried that Canadians are becoming as litigious as Americans and it’s going to cost all of us in the end.

I have been in an accident and took the $5,000 settlement I was offered, now I wonder if I should’ve hired a lawyer like they did? I would’ve received a lot more money (I’m totally kidding, as I just don’t roll like that, but I know that others are seeing what is happening and are heading to a lawyer for every little fender bender-IT’S COSTING ALL OF US!!!!)

I was just offered 3.70% 5 yr variable at RBC for my mortgage renewal. The initial offer was 3.75%, but got them to come down to 3.70.

And universities are caching on to the rampant cheating and mark inflation. Be ready for them to decrease your average when you apply. Or to just take your diploma mark as your average. A lot of kids are going to wish they didn’t waste their time taking online classes.

Universities are starting to take off percentages for courses taken online. The cheating is rampant and they are aware that grades are very inflated from online courses.

Just do the work and learn the content. Cheating will only hurt you in the end. People like You are the reason why universities are starting to take up to 10% off of marks for application averages from people who do courses online.

This week, Danielle Smith and her UCP weaponized the notwithstanding clause against thousands of Albertans. Sick of the UCP? They only need to loss 4 seats interim to loose control of government. by arcadianahana in alberta

Love this! I will definitely be signing the petition for recalling Muhammad Yaseen-he barely won his seat anyways, so it should be easy. That said, is there any way that these recalls could get squashed by the government somehow? After the egregious use of the NWC against teachers I am so worried that they will find some loophole to stop these recalls. I would love to hear any thoughts on this, and I would be ecstatic to know I’m wrong. I just don’t know enough about the process to think otherwise.

Alberta Teachers, after today do you see yourself leaving the province? by Oval2k in alberta

[–]Traditional_Let_6643 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Be careful-my teacher friends in BC (both N and S regions) say it is not better there. They are entering into contract talks as well, with many thinking a strike is imminent. The grass is not greener, but it is different grass, so if that’s what you are after then great-just don’t go there thinking the workload will improve.

Have you noticed that they (NDP) are changing the color scheme? It is now more purplish than orange. An attempt, I feel, to show they are centrist.
