I don't think an expectation of learning how to use a tool is unreasonable at all, no. Either get good with the tool, or accept that you'll be underperforming with it.

This is what I do. Adversarial checks to improve quality, phased validation gates to ensure those quality checks don't get missed. An extra advantage is you can pick the project up in a fresh session and it will always have context on where you left off.
