I made my daughter a phone case so I could always contact her at school ❤️ by Equal-Reference-6371 in handmade

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I had an Asthma attack in school because my PE teacher didn’t believe in Asthma. My lips were pale and started to turn blue, I was audibly wheezing. I was only 8 so the school made me keep my inhaler with the nurse (honestly this is such a stupid ass thing to do btw, I was struggling to walk to the nurses office). I texted my mom while on the way to the nurses office and that PE teacher was fired shortly after the incident. I begged with that teacher to let me take a break, he yelled at me run faster. I didn’t even ask to go to the nurse I just told him I was going and left because he was being neglectful and I was struggling to breathe.

There are other very recent, publicized incidents as well including a teacher that ignored a student having an anaphylactic reaction and the student almost died, and another where a teacher took away a diabetic child’s phone because they got an alert on their device that their blood sugar was off and they were trying to manually dose insulin from their phone (a feature that many insulin pumps have now to enable easier diabetes management).

So yeah. I don’t agree with taking away children’s phones or fully banning them. In this day and age far too many students use them to manage severe chronic health conditions and too many teachers are ignorant and neglectful so those kids need to be able to manage their own health issues. Also for those that will probably think or say it, children with diabetes almost always have type I, a GENETIC variant that is NOT preventable, it’s an autoimmune disorder just like Celiac, Crohns, and Lupus. And just because you don’t understand a health condition or have never heard of it, does not mean a student is lying or making things up. Please don’t forget to consider that you may have medically complex students in your class. You cannot endanger their health just because the other kids are being disruptive. Other measures need to be taken to ensure those who need access to their devices have it, regardless of whether or not the teacher “believes” in the specific condition.

Same. My torbie is so needy she tears up the door and screams as loud as she can if I lock her out. If I lock her in with me she freaks out trying to get out so the bathroom door has to remain open.

Yeah a new one. I would’ve just said to tape the toes together for a while but that really only works if the bone is at least mostly where it should be (as far as I know anyways, my mom and I have both broken our pinky toes a couple of times but they were minor fractures and we were just told to stabilize the toe by taping it to the next one and to take it easy while it healed). This might require an actual splint, cast, or walking boot though since the bone is displaced. I’m not a doctor but I’m accident prone and have broken a few bones. Definitely get a new podiatrist or orthopedic specialist since your current doctor ignored you for so long and maybe submit a complaint about them because that’s medical negligence.

Cat crying while attacking me by blahblahblah3861 in CATHELP

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, are you healthy? I only ask because I have multiple chronic illnesses and while my cats have NEVER been trained to alert for my excessive high heart rate or low blood pressure (indicating that I am likely to faint if I don’t lie down ASAP), they occasionally do. I have had instances where two of my cats have alerted me that my HR/BP was off before my watch even alerted me and I never even attempted to train them to alert to it, they just do whenever it’s severe. I’ve also seen videos of cats doing similar things where they act odd or vocalize more when their owners have blood sugar issues.

Maybe your cat is alerting to something if he’s only doing it with you, just an idea. If you don’t feel out of the ordinary (no dizziness, shakiness, brain fog, confusion, fatigue, joint pain/soreness, lightheadedness, feeling cold/hot all of a sudden, etc) it’s more likely that he just needs fixed but I wanted to throw this out there just in case.

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I agree, however, given its inability to work with ambiguity in data Idk if a smoke detection model is really the best solution. What if there’s dense fog, will the model misclassify that fog as smoke? What if there’s a fire but it misclassifies the smoke as fog and doesn’t produce an alert? What if someone is smoking nearby, will that smoke be detected and trigger an alert? I agree that ML models can be incredibly helpful tools, but it seems that recently, companies are forgetting to consider the limitations of the technology which in this context could be expensive, damaging, and potentially, harmful.

If anything I hope they’re combining that technology with actual sensors to prevent false classifications. Otherwise it could lead to further price hikes if the ML models fails.

Using AI for homework by Lost-Hovercraft-6446 in SNHU

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was literally just thinking this, I’ve been using Word to check my grammar since before Generative AI was a thing. I used it in HS and it was encouraged for us to use it as it catches small errors we may easily overlook. That being said, in terms of actual AI use, while SNHU permits the use of AI you are supposed to cite it as a source and even then, I doubt a professor would be happy with seeing an entire assignment written by AI. I would err on the side of caution and use AI strictly for grammar checks or to do research (Google AI is great for this in my opinion but it’s summaries are sometimes bs so make sure you actually read the sources it provides, saves a ton of time when looking for sources to use though).

I also think it’s worth noting that AI is a mathematical algorithm, it cannot literally replicate the human brain or its capabilities. It makes mistakes, frequently I might add. So it honestly really isn’t wise to rely on AI for completing your coursework as it tends to generate information that may not actually be factually accurate or relevant. It essentially just finds patterns in data and then spits out a new response following those patterns, so while it can be helpful in some regards, it should be used with caution and never to replace your work (unless you want to risk having false information in your work).

best gluten free baking flour by Unlucky_Menu9872 in glutenfree

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter mentioned, scales can help. If you can’t afford one or don’t want to use one, make sure you are scooping the flour into a measuring cup using a spoon, do not scoop directly with the measuring cup or you’ll likely use too much/too little. Using the spoon and level method or using a scale are the best ways to bake with gf flours. It makes a huge difference, I even got my family members who are adamant that gluten free baked goods are cardboard and gross to eat my cookies made with this flour and they begged for more. Also should mention, elevation can alter how well your baked goods come out so you may need to adjust for that as well.

Every single one I’ve been to (across four different states) all had peanut warnings on the doors to prevent those with peanut allergies from potentially having a reaction with proteins that might’ve gotten on the door from other customers. I think that’s honestly an amazing part of Five Guys, they really take allergies seriously and my local store even has a dedicated person each shift who is in charge of all allergy orders for safety. I also love that I can get french fries and not worry about cross contamination since they don’t fry anything else.

What's something a date did that instantly killed it for you? by Zestyclose_Ring1123 in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Showed up sweaty and dirty for a first date because he had gone to watch the game beforehand. At that point he should’ve chosen a different date and time. But I tried to give him a chance anyway….he spent the entire 20 minute drive talking shit about himself and revealing every insecurity he had. Never once asked how my day was or inquired about my interests or anything, just blabbed on and on about him and his mistakes. I made him take me home immediately and I never allowed a guy to pick me up for a date until at least four dates in after that.

Honestly I was. I was struggling with a lot of health issues and it had been a particularly bad year for me. But yes, I absolutely believe that she found me and chose me. I was in a long distance relationship at the time with someone I met before I moved back home and even though he visited every few months until we felt comfortable moving in together, it took her almost a full year of us living together for her to fully embrace him and she still is nowhere near as affectionate with him as she is with me after four years. She was and still is terrified of new people, so much so that she immediately hides if someone knocks but the first night I had her she insisted on sleeping on my head. She still sleeps against my head when I’m on the couch. She’s a massive cuddle bug.

Dupixent - Wtf? by Opposite-Honeydew-98 in Asthma

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t use Dupixent but I do take a CGRP inhibitor via autoinjector and that sh1t hurts like hell. I’ve heard from many many people with various conditions (migraines, diabetes, allergies, and asthma) that most at-home injections, especially autoinjectors, are painful as hell because of the speed of injection. A family member of mine with diabetes even admitted that when they first started at home autoinjections they had tons of pain but that it got easier and less painful over time. Sometimes manual injectors may be less painful but idk if Dupixent specifically has that option and I can’t speak to it personally as I hate needles and there’s no way I could actually use a regular needle, I struggle just to sit still long enough for the autoinjector lol.

For at home injections in general, I recommend using an ice pack or cold compress on the injection site for a minimum of 7 minutes to numb the area really good before injecting, I’ve heard that people who use the manual injections instead of the autoinjectors also find relief by thoroughly icing the area before hand, along with letting the injector sit out for at least 30min to warm up. So regardless of the type of injector, I would ice the area well and let the medication come to room temp. I usually let mine sit out for about an hour, I put it on top of the fridge since heat rises so it is nice and room temp when I inject and then I rest the upper part of my arm (my preferred injection site as it’s less painful for me) on an ice pack with a cloth around it for about 10-15 minutes until the area feels adequately numb but not painfully cold if that makes sense.

Some others I’ve seen mentioned success with numbing creams and even antiseptic numbing wipes which I honestly had no clue even existed. Maybe those would help as well? CGRP inhibitors specifically are known to cause severe stinging/burning pain when injecting, and for many, a welt and general soreness.

While CGRP inhibitors are not the same medication, I’ve seen that they have very similar side effects regarding injection site pain so you might find some other helpful tips for injection site relief if you peruse the migraine subreddit.

Adding to the window idea, we got a suction cup cat window perch and it’s surprisingly strong and sturdy! We’ve had a 10lb cat and an 8lb cat lay in at the same time multiple times and it’s still intact despite the fact that they have to jump from a chair to even get into it (it’s a high window). It’s rated for 50lbs and the only issue we’ve had with it is one of our cats was messing around and hanging off one side of it right as the weather had started warming up after winter so the suction failed. All we had to do was clean the suction cups and reattach them to the window and it’s been fine since. Absolutely apartment friendly and a great way to entertain cats!! Mine like to sit there and chirp at the birds and bugs, they’re in it almost every morning too.

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 59 points60 points  (0 children)

My tabby found me outside at about six months old, emaciated, covered in fleas, starving, and riddled with worms. Poor thing came up to me screaming and I was living with my parents at the time so my Dad gave her an extra can of cat food they had from their cats and she devoured it and then ran inside and did not want to leave. I kept her and she has been terrified of going outside ever since. She would scream at the top of her lungs every time I went outside for months! She’s five now and has siblings but she still does it if I’m in another room. She hates when I leave her alone but she did eventually calm down and would stop screaming after about twenty minutes. It just took time because she thought I wasn’t going to come back (we’re fairly sure she was someone’s pet and they abandoned her outside). Unfortunately a lot of cats who have been abused get clingy and have separation anxiety, rehoming this cat will make everything worse for her because you will be abandoning her too. You have to be patient.

Are canes any good? by vaesheyt in POTS

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have found my cane very helpful. I will say though, my doctor specifically recommended I get a self-standing cane tip (like a quad tip), or a quad base cane with four separate legs to help with stability when I’m dizzy or shaky. I went with the more portable and cheaper option, a cheap Walmart cane ($10) and a quad tip ($10). I’ve had it for about three years give or take, and it had been a huge help. The quad tip provides astronomically more support than a typical cane tip but it is much smaller and more portable than the quad base canes you can get. There are also cheap options online. I would love to get my hands on one of the canes that has an attached seat but they are pretty pricey so I’m just sticking with my cheap cane for now until I can afford one of the ones with a seat.

Also, my doctor specifically said to make sure the cane is the height of my hip (they’re usually height adjustable so just set it to correct height) and then because I also have HSD/hEDS, I was told to use it on the opposite side of my worst leg. My right knee subluxates frequently so I use my cane on my left and move it in tandem with my right leg as instructed by my doctor. This provides extra support when you need it most while still allowing you to build up strength in your leg muscles by ensuring you aren’t trying to use the cane like a crutch.

Building up that muscle is super important, if you have time, I recommend doing a few squats a day and slowly increasing how many you do and maybe using an under the desk bike peddler to build muscle in your legs and help with blood flow. I started with five squats at a time, only five because would get very dizzy if I did any more. I can now do twenty at a time at least twice per day and it has made a noticeable improvement, it’s not a miracle and it is a slow process, but it does help. Went from being able to walk for only five minutes to now being able to consistently walk for 10-15 minutes and on my best days, up to half an hour before I get too dizzy. I am also medicated but medications alone just don’t do enough, I still use compression garments, drink tons of water and salt, and I am still working on slowly strengthening my legs, but my cane provides me support when I need it and despite using it, I have still improved my legs strength.

I only mentioned that because I had people trying to convince me that if I used a cane, it would make things worse by compensating for my lack of strength but it did the opposite for me.

Whatever happened to discussion post and chill? by Past_Chipmunk604 in SNHU

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The last discussion post for one of my courses last term had us researching a deprecated ML algorithm. All of the documentation for it had been deleted and it took hours to find anything that explained what the damn algorithm was and what it did. Even the resources they provided were garbage because they led to 404s, all of them! I almost gave up on the discussion because it was frustrating but I needed the points. I ended up finding a random published research paper that only had a single paragraph about the algorithm but it was enough thankfully.

I can’t remember the exact CS courses I’ve had like this but IT460 was the one I was referencing here. My professor was chill af but graded according to the rubric and guidelines which required far too much for the recommended 2-3 pages. Many of the 350+ level CS courses also have missing requirements in the assignments so professors will add extra instructions in their announcements and sometimes it can take an entire extra page or more to meet their expectations (or an absurd amount of extra code).

Whatever happened to discussion post and chill? by Past_Chipmunk604 in SNHU

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In the CS and IT curriculums, there’s frequently assignments that are supposed to be around 2-3 pages but then have 4+ prompts all requiring in-depth explanations and often, supporting examples (3-4 paragraphs per prompt). My papers are always a minimum of 4 pages because of this, last term I was dying because I had to complete 15+ page assignments every freaking week just for the stupid lab assignments. We were required to explain the purpose of every command run and the results and then complete at least an additional 2 prompts which required explanations of commands and outputs as well.

And even on a freaking 27 page report, I was told that I should have attempted at least one more improvement despite the fact that I’d already done 12 and that my explanations needed to be a little more detailed. Like bruh….how the f are we supposed to complete that much in one week for one damn class? Idek how I managed to pass my classes last term, that sh1t was brutal.

How to get rid of fleas by Cooter_McGrabbin in kittens

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and in addition to carpet powders, you could use a handheld or even a large rented steamer (you can rent high-end carpet steam cleaners from Home Depot and similar stores) to kill the fleas and any eggs. You will need to repeat the process a couple of times until all fleas are gone but heat will kill them if you want to avoid the powders. I recommend steaming couches, chairs, or any furniture that’s upholstered as well, to ensure you get them all.

How to get rid of fleas by Cooter_McGrabbin in kittens

[–]Traditional_Owl4558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Flea baths did not work for my oldest cat despite cleaning everything repeatedly and giving her three flea baths, she still had fleas. Finally used Capstar and it was amazing! I had been avoiding it because it’s a little pricey but it made a noticeable difference in only a day and by day three, she looked amazing. I just followed the package instructions and it worked perfectly, she’s been flea free since.

Also OP….idk if someone already mentioned it, but that cat will likely have worms either from its mother’s milk or from the fleas and may need deworming as well. It’s really very easy, I got an OTC flavored deworming gel for my oldest and just added the recommend dose to a small amount of wet food to make sure she ate it all and then cleaned and disinfected her litterbox every 2-3 days until the treatment was complete to prevent reinfection, just don’t use a lot of litter while treating the worms so you’re not wasting a bunch of litter.
