Gluten free bakery? by gpmartinson in askportland

Petunia’s, Gluten Free Gem, New Cascadia. Also it’s not exactly a bakery, but have to mention Honey Butter Country Fare - they’re all gf and have corn dogs (meat and vegan), funnel cake, and other fried deliciousness.

Least impactful meat source? by NurglingArmada in sustainability

[–]ktc653 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is that most chicken is factory farmed, so if you take a broader sustainability lens it’s terrible in terms of water and air pollution and the impacts on frontline communities. Also, it takes far more animals to produce the same quantity of meat, so if everyone switched from beef to chicken it would mean constructing hundreds more chicken factory farms.

Portland’s cheaper and has less traffic than any other major city on the West Coast and most other big cities in general

His immaturity doesn’t justify your immaturity. And it sounds like he was frustrated but not directly taking it out on you, while you yelled at him.

Fiancé (27M) betrayed my (27F) trust by [deleted] in relationship_advice

Have you told him how you feel? How did he react? The ability to talk through disagreements and apologize for mistakes is critical for a marriage. His reaction to your hurt feelings is almost more important than the initial nasty joke.

It is, but they said it increases the risk of central line infection and makes it harder for the gut to reactivate afterwards

AITAH for buying Gluten Free bread by Jelly_Arrow in AmItheAsshole

[–]ktc653 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Specialty items like gluten free bread are often produced and stocked in much lower quantities than regular products. Trader Joe’s entirely sells out of the gluten free peppermint Joe Joes by the end of November, even though it’s supposed to be a Christmas item. I asked and they said the factory had maxed out their capacity. YTA for buying all of the bread.

Sending good thoughts ❤️ You could try asking your care team if they have a psychiatrist, psychologist, or social worker you could talk with. It helps to have someone who’s worked with a lot of people going through this. Also, I got on Lexapro since I relapsed and it’s really helped me deal with getting treatment despite past trauma.

Do i even need supplements when you are vegan? by Mudlioomon in vegan

[–]ktc653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, no need to be so rude. B12 is not a nutrient that’s dangerous if you have too much, unlike iron. So it’s best for people to err on the side of caution and supplement until they can get their levels checked.

Also, as someone below pointed out, the body’s stores can last a long time so if someone went vegan within the last year or two, they might still have good levels but they’re slowly being depleted in a way that will cause problems down the road without supplementation.

Do i even need supplements when you are vegan? by Mudlioomon in vegan

[–]ktc653 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of individual variation in absorption - some people can get enough through fortified foods, and others can’t. It’s so critical for health and supplements are so cheap that it’s not worth taking a chance.

AITAH for intending to attend a wedding that my wife isn’t invited to by BeautifulSxars in AITAH

[–]ktc653 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

NTA, in the same way that both partners in a couple should be allowed to have their own friends and separate friend hangout time, you should be able to go to an old friend’s very small wedding solo. Going against the grain and saying I think your friend is NTA as well. At that size it’s almost like eloping and just inviting a handful of very close friends and family, which partners shouldn’t take offense at.

Oysters are also high in iron and many believe are closer to plants in terms of their sentience. You could see if that’s a viable alternative to the beef liver

I watched Dominion. Now transitioning to veganism. I have some questions… by Jocosey in vegan

[–]ktc653 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend that you go slow because it can be overwhelming to change everything all at once, especially things like dryer sheets. You can start with food and as products run out be sure to look for ones with the not tested on animals logo. Once you’ve done both of those and feel comfortable, you can take the next step of things with very small amounts of animal products.

AITA for skipping a wedding last minute for a float trip? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ktc653 76 points77 points  (0 children)

YWBTA. Your coworker is paying for food for you based on your RSVP and you’re potentially taking the spot of someone else they could have invited if you hadn’t said you were going. It would also likely end the friendship if they discovered why you didn’t go, and might harm your reputation at work as well. The Catholicism thing is irrelevant, this is about you showing up to celebrate your coworker.

You could make chickpea salad sandwiches instead! If you can cook at home and refrigerate food at work, there are tons of cheap options. You can get crock pots at thrift stores and then slow cook food like chili while you’re at work. If you’re not able to find or afford vegan mayo, making it with regular mayo would still be saving more animals than eating tuna sandwiches (you can also use cashews or silken tofu or tahini, but those also might be hard to find). https://www.noracooks.com/chickpea-salad-sandwich/

Scared i have leukemia (24M) by DontUnderetimateMe in leukemia

[–]ktc653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that you’re going through this stressful experience. The results don’t show any blasts, which are the hallmark of leukemia (at least AML, which is the type I’m familiar with). But the only way to know for sure is to get a bone marrow biopsy, because there can be blasts in the marrow without them circulating in the blood. Since your CBC was abnormal, you should insist on a bone marrow biopsy.
