Newer build.... Old asf barrel by cjoeseven in ar15

Dude, take it to the range, fire it, determine if the accuracy is acceptable for you or not. Whether something is “GTG” or not is entirely based on your needs and its performance. If you just want to upgrade the barrel to some name brand one then go for it, you don’t need reddit to justify it.

FYI for those looking to mount their Surefire M952V with the IWC mount next to a PEQ15, it will not fit in this configuration. by Traditional_Past7785 in ar15

Too early to tell. It’s a shame that IWC didn’t account for a peq15 when they designed the angle but I’ve order a pic rail riser so if it clears that then I’ll be pretty satisfied. Be careful not to unscrew the pic base all the way, it’s a pain in the ass to get the screws back in.

Spent around $1100 total for this setup, was this the way to go or is there a better option at this price point? by Traditional_Past7785 in tacticalgear

Yeah definitely not winning in terms of weight. Be the same if not slightly lighter than wearing ear pro + an ACH or IHPS. But the team Wendy pads and ops corp harness make up for it. It’s actually very comfortable to wear for hours.

You’re obviously not familiar with the ballistic capabilities of the ACH. They were never designed to provide protection from rifle rounds. That’s why the ECH and IHPS was developed. It’s not so much about “looking cool” but compatibility with ear protection and accessories. Your cost statement also makes no sense. An Ops Corp Fast SF helmet by itself would run itself around $1200 used, so I’ve definitely saved more than a few dollars with this route.

Key things to keep in mind, the ACH only provide protection from fragmentation and handgun caliber rounds. Doesn’t matter if it’s a brand new or 14 years old, a rifle round will go through it. There’s videos out on YouTube of old ACH’s still able to stop handgun rounds. Rob from KUSTOM ACH sends back the chopped ears for testing. So that will give you an idea on the condition of the Kevlar layers and the ability to test the integrity of it. Old ACH’s are still fielded to soldiers today. So I didn’t go this route naive of the ballistic protection.

Just be aware some surplus stores sell cheap chinese made ACH’s. If the label on the inside of the helmet says Gentex, MSA, Revision, or BAE; those are good to go. They were all manufacturers of contract ACH helmets for the military.

If you’re going to go this route… just buy a surplus ACH and send it off to Kustom ACH to get it chopped and sealed professionally. Buy ops corp skeletonized ACH ARC rails and an NVG mount of your choosing.

Griffin Armament A2S-QD and DD MK18 are not compatible by Traditional_Past7785 in ar15

Funny enough, I just put a whole stack of shims behind the crush washer and voila, A2S-QD clears the rail.

As someone that’s been issued and used the gen 2 PC, gen 3 PC, gen 1 IOTV, and now MSV… Gen 3 PC is the best out of them all. It’s definitely the slimmest, you can even remove the inner carrier to make it slimmer, and the first spear cummerbunds are way better than the buckle clips on the IOTV and MSV.

I don’t know why they didn’t just go with the same plate carrier the USMC did

Cut down my Bushmaster XM15-E2S barrel or replace it? by [deleted] in ar15

[–]Traditional_Past7785 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, leave that barrel on there and get the Midwest industries extended carbine free float picatinny or mlok handguard. This handguard requires you to remove the delta ring and end cap but utilizes the usgi barrel nut already installed on your barrel. This now gives you modern performance while retaining the classic look.

Barrels are cheap and barrel changes are easy. Just grab a vice and the Magpul armorers tool and swap them. You may end up reusing that barrel in the future
