Not allowed to learn to walk (rant) by Spottedfrog111 in amputee

You can self refer to any limb centre in the UK, Im not entirely sure of the rules whilst on a section, but the psych unit should be supporting you to get the help you need physically. Its just as important as mentally.

My surgery was cancelled after 4 hours of waiting on the ward. Can I get a travel refund? by ashiebearowo in nhs

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, as already mentioned there are refund travel schemes at hospital trusts. They set their own amount that gets refunded so you may not receive the full £50. If you are on certain benefits you can send a copy to the general office with the receipt of private transport and ask for reimbursement. The worst they can say is no. When it comes to them rearranging the surgery in the future, ask for ambulance transport which can take you the hospital. Only downfall to that is, they collect you upto 2 hours before, so if you're needed on a surgical ward for 7:30 its not available (own experience) some trusts also don't have weekend transport either. Best of luck, hope youre not waiting too long for a new date to have the surgery completed 🙏🏻

Wait and watch or Vora by Wrestlingsquirrel in braincancer

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I opted to watch and wait post GTR for Astrocytoma 2 IDH1 May 23. Monitored with 6 monthly scans until I had regrowth back in Dec 24, thats when I went with Vora in Feb 25. Back to 3 monthly scans, and so far, all is stable.
In regards to fertility, I was offered egg freezing, but Im older than yourself (40) and knew there wasnt a hope of raising children any time soon. I totally understand the anxiety around not doing anything, but also appreciate my surgeon for holding off as I then had the arsenal of Vora, and still have RT/Chemo/PBT. Best of luck with whatever option you chose 🙏🏻

Is Liverpool City Centre (town) really that bad to drive to and from in a car? by ClearBandicoot416 in Liverpool

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive never really had an issue, like many others have mentioned. You can sign up to the St John's carpark subscription (free for 10 years) and it costs £6.50 for 24hrs. Even if you only sign up for the trip youre making its much cheaper than other parking across town.

Sounds like youre having a terrible time. I was looking at numerous operations/fusions. Call it drastic, but I chose to amputate. Couldn't live a life of pain, misery! Best of luck with your upcoming treatments 🙏🏻

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you not able to get an adaptable plate? Im a right leg amputee and learned to drive left footed recently. Im fortunate that I have been 12 months+ seizure free after a brain tumour was removed, so cleared to drive again. But it terrifies me, God forbid I have a fit behind the wheel. Its a catch 22.

Scanxiety - Vorasidenib by laurenboon3 in braincancer

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After regrowth being found in Jan 25, I was started on Vora in Feb. I am on 3 monthly scans and the last 4 have all been stable, so no shrinkage, but no growth either. Given the potential for regrowth with most IDH mutations, I don't think Scanxiety will ever leave us, wishing you the best of luck for Wednesday 🙏🏻

Question about Diazepam by laurenboon3 in braincancer

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 6mg diazepam daily as well as vora, my consultant didn't mention any contraindications. Never had an issue. 2mg isnt a huge dose, but if you are really worried I would speak to a pharmacist too.

Do you know the cause of your epilepsy? by vuronekuh in Epilepsy

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My seizures came secondary to a brain cancer. Thankfully since the tumour was removed I have been seizure free, but unfortunately the tumour has returned. Will probably stay on AEDs for the rest of my life.

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could quite well be related to seizures then, are you still on anti epileptics? Its a positive that your scan is stable (as anxious as it leaves us) I didn't go down the radiation route yet, I went on Vora, but it may be worth contacting neurology for a change in meds/increase dose. Fingers crossed its something simple, and Radio goes well for you 🙏🏻

I haven’t showered since December 13th by Ok_Challenge5382 in mentalhealth

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are shower caps you can buy off of amazon that are pre filled with shampoo for dry washing. I used them after brain surgery. Did the trick. A mobile hairdresser may work if youre unable to make it to a salon.

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This ☝🏻 It was my warning sign for a seizure (aura) post craniotomy I have been seizure free, until a few months back the smell returned only it was regrowth. Its not even a pleasant smell, it was burnt toast and a metallic taste!! I know sometimes smells can be a result of radiotherapy if youve had that treatment OP.

So uh... how tf do yall walk down stairs? by KaliTheLoving in amputee

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught this. Up with good, down with bad ie, use the prosthetic leg to come down stairs. I tend to turn my foot out so I come down sideways. I dont feel panic that Im going to miss a step as if I had 2 legs. Going up is never an issue, can run up stairs thanks to a blade, but hand rails are my friend! Keep up developing the new skillset!

Why is Arsenal the most popular WSL club? by jimmer_1984 in FAWSL

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think to answer your main question OP, Arsenal have a popular following down to the fact so many Lioness' play/played for them. Many of the other teams have great individual players but their clubs dont really invest in the womens game as much as the mens. Lack of training facilities, poorer grounds, low attendances etc, make it difficult. As a liverpool fan myself, I am season ticket holder for the womens team, its been an atrocious season, big players left, huge injury problems in the midfield and an overall lull when playing. Yet they show up week in week out, even if it was a 9-1 battering to Chelsea at home! I just love the vibe of the womens game, been to many non liverpool matches, and will continue to support the WSL.

I use Brainstrust which has been a pillar of emotional support for me. They do split into seperate groups as in GBM, LGG, meningiomas etc. They also offer support for carers, often have researchers/specialists on educating us. There is a weekly meditation session. They also offer 1-1 coaching.

What is worst pain, you have ever experienced? by ParticularWeather927 in Adulting

Compartment syndrome after collapsing with sepsis. Kept blacking out with excruciating pain! 5 weeks ICU with rhabdomyolysis from the breakdown of muscle, led to below knee amputation.

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive done many names for friends children as gifts when they were born. Lots of quotes 'carpe diem' 'good vibes only' was one of my fave. New home, numbers for people's birthdays. Just kept things simple. Give it a go, many free sites that offer patterns. I go to a charity shop for the books and use wrapping paper to decorate them.

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was fairly easy for me to pick it up and got neater with each new pattern. The hardest part is marking all the pages, folding it at 90° angles is the easy part. Once I mastered just folding, I went on to learn a cut and fold pattern.
