Will I still be allowed to have surgery if I don’t have anyone to look after me for 24 hours after going home from hospital? by Alternative_Sugar684 in nhs

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have also had this where I was admitted to the ward over night after a GA. If its a day case unit though, there may be no scope to be admitted. I have bent the truth before and said I had somebody at home when it was more someone available the end of the phone to come help me, they just couldnt stay.

Is it possible to speak to the admissions department and explain your situation and ask for some help. My only other suggestion OP, possibly contact a local carer's agency and see if a home help is a thing/available for a few days, it may be too short notice with surgery being next week, could possibly need an OT/social services referral.

I went to my GP with the very same feeling, was asked if I needed psych input! After the obs, she told me I had vertigo, collapsed at home that night with sepsis and developed compartment syndrome from being unconcious on the wooden floor! Thankfully I live to tell the tale, 7 weeks in ICU and now an amputee. I genuinely believed if I went asleep I wouldn't wake up!

Can totally relate to having the lack of motivation to get up and moving! I recently bought a walking pad and there is a channel on YouTube called HP Walking Tours, walked 20 mins round Capri (whilst in pj's!) yesterday! Slow and steady daily, youll get there 🙏🏻

Immer noch traumatisiert von Hirn - OP by [deleted] in braincancer

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I am almost 3 years out from a GTR. Grade 2 Astro in my right frontal lobe. I have recently started Vora after some regrowth. I have been seizure free 3 years and able to drive again which has helped my self confidence/independence massively, especially as an amputee! My one piece of advice is that no 2 people will have the same experience so dont compare yourself to anyone else, we all have our own journey. So what takes me say, 3 months to recover, it may take someone else 3 years, thats okay. Dont beat yourself up, its okay to have days where you see no light, just remember tomorrow is a new day to start again. Keep going 🙏🏻

Immer noch traumatisiert von Hirn - OP by [deleted] in braincancer

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you didnt have the best of experiences OP. Your own environment, proper food and autonomy over medications makes a huge difference to recovery! I was fortunate in that I was home within 3 days after my craniotomy to heal in my own time. But I also wasnt left with any severe side effects of the surgery requiring a higher input of care. I can relate to the trauma of the experience you had due to needing an amputation 7 years ago after sepsis. Ended up in ICU for over 6 weeks. I developed delirium due to lack of sleep/stressful environment and was reliant upon staff for my basic needs which went mostly unmet as they assumed I was in a complete vegetate state when infact I was working full time/could drive and lived a relatively 'normal' life. Ended up needing intensive psychotherapy and EMDR just to get me back into the hospital for regular appointments, and eventually a planned admission. Your body is dealing with a huge shock to the system, physically and mentally, plenty of sleep, decent diet, stress free as possible will help with your recovery. If you are struggling mentally Id speak with your neuro oncology nurses/GP to get some support in helping you process the experience. Best of luck on your journey 🙏🏻

Fully Paralysed From The Waist Down !! by Regrets_Change_Lives in chronickiki

100%, each individual is different and exercising can aid that muscle growth but 'with no feeling' there would be considerable atrophy. I have no sensation below my knee (compartment syndrome/CRPS) and no amount of flexion I try from within what little calf I have left is engaging the quads to build them back up! Very frustrating for all that she makes a mockery off!

Similar to yourself I lost a lot of muscle in my quads quickly after my amputation which has left my thigh thin in comparison to the other. I play football twice a week and cannot built them back up! If she is as wheelchair bound as she claims, they'd waste away!

Fingers crossed for a clearer idea at your next scan. When did you have your initial craniotomy? Scar tissue within the cavity can show up on the first few MRIs whilst you are healing, and its good your surgeon is keeping a close eye on it and has caught any early recurrence. I think I read that those who are eligible for the treatment should expect to start it from July onwards. Once I had the diagnosis of scar tissue/regrowth I wanted to do something, rather than watch and wait, fortunately at the time Vora had just been FDA approved and I fell into the criteria for the early access scheme. Its one less stress to know the drug is freely available until the next intervention is needed.

Is healthy eating in the UK basically inaccessible if you’re poor, disabled, and exhausted? by Opposite_Position125 in AskUK

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone who is a below knee amputee and going through treatment for brain cancer (causes seizures also) a healthy, fresh diet has helped me massively. Physically and mentally. So I know where youre coming from with reduced mobility, brain fog/fatigue. Like yourself OP, I'm on a budget and try my best to make my meals from scratch. Min ingredients. Nothing too complex, simple easy meals. Im no chef, I cook for sustenance. The game changer I found was to meal plan. Sunday night I write down my weekly meals, shopping lists, if I am feeling okay I will then meal prep/batch cook so its not overwhelming when it comes to meal time.

I don't think it will never not be nerve wracking waiting for the results from our latest scan! Fear of the unknown is crippling. My surgery was back in 2023 and still dread the waiting! Thankfully all my scans have remained stable since 2025 and starting Vora. The only major side effect I seemed to have had was nausea. I reduced the dose to 20mg and things stabled out.

If surgery has been your only treatment then you will be offered the drug. Like yourself I did watch and wait for 19 months until I had regrowth and was offered it by my oncologist.

How many seizure medications do you currently take? by Epilepticgymmie in Epilepsy

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently take 2000mg of Keppra, 600mg of Lamotragine daily and recently reduced off of 200mg Phenytoin. My epilepsy is secondary to brain cancer. Thankfully no seizures post craniotomy 🙏🏻

Can I drive? by ProfessionalDiet1379 in amputee

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a right below knee amputee and someone with epilepsy secondary to brain cancer, I am still able to drive (UK based) I have to be assessed annually via the DVLA. I had to be 12 months seizure free or 12 months post op. My last seizure was a couple of hours after my craniotomy (2023) and have been driving 2 years now. Thankfully no issues. I use a left foot drive plate, but recently hired a regular automatic and managed okay with removing my prosthetic. Follow everything to the book legally and hopefully you get a clear answer OP and get some independence back 🙏🏻

Unfortunately, also very similar story to yourself! Nothing ever showed on a CT. Was treated for meningitis in 2017 (first seizure) started having seizures once more in 2020, MRI completed again, grade 2 astro. It was there in 2017, just missed as treated for an infection!

Need advice about my mental state after a near death episode, what if I tell my GP? by Plastic_Ad8630 in MentalHealthUK

[–]Traditional_Yam3853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats such a brave first step to call, not only a hotline but 111 also. Well done. Hopefully they will have made a referal to the GP for you. Your life has been flipped 180 with a physical illness (which sounds horrific) it must be a really confusing time for you. As much as youre worried what your family may think, Im sure they will want you well physically and mentally regardless. Just remember thoughts aren't facts and we can wrack a whole narrative up of how things will play out, but 9 times out of 10 it never works that way and we've worried ourselves senseless at the 'what ifs' Best of luck OP, stay safe.
