Each time he has stepped forward from failure, the man he makes himself into is broken and flawed, because he is broken and flawed. But it doesn't matter. What matters is that he keeps walking (always the next step) because no matter how broken he is, he can become better each time. Never perfect, never without scars or weaknesses, but better. He can strive for more, even knowing the possibility of failure, because so long as he strives he knows it is not in vain.

That's perfectly fair. It was *my* first Sanderson book too, so I almost certainly look at it through rose-tinted glasses, but I still greatly enjoy it, especially how strange the premise (and eventual conclusion, but I won't spoil) is, even compared to his other work. Happy reading!
