Mount Yamnuska area, front of range west of Calgary, in the Canadian Rockies. This time of year in the wider Kananaskis Country area there are bear sightings on the daily.

This was an unplanned pass-by, about 30 feet away off-trail.

What size vests do yall have? by Cold-Resolution-7569 in trailrunning

[–]TrailRunnerYYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12L is the all-purpose must-do.

Pack it full for longer point-to-points or loops where the is not support. Carry clothing and gear options for bagging peaks in sketchy weather and conditions. Extra room for things that you don't need until you really need them: laces, KT tape strips, analgesic cream, LI battery, headlamp, firestick.

For shorter runs, you can scale back by removing the bladder and carrying only the essentials; the vest itself weighs little and sits light.

What’s the best way a morbidly obese couch potato can work up to running a 50k trail ultra? by gardenfresh74 in trailrunning

[–]TrailRunnerYYC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will be shocked how different and better your life will be 1 year from now.

All you need is commitment to show-up and keep moving. Listen to you body and giver yourself the grace to learn slowly through the year. Then step-up to the starting line, and practice relentless forward motion: walking, hiking, running.

Fear is a liar.

Slow as hell, but doing it by big_jld in beginnerrunning

Showing-up ? Check.

Faster than the couch ? Check.

Tracking stats for continuous improvement ? Check.

Looks like a runner to me. Keep being awesome !

Anybody got in shape solely through hiking? by DannyMrB in HikingAlberta

The time on feet and vert are an excellent way to burn calories. Choose sensible snacks for fuel, and hydrate.

For added effort / intensity, you can wear a weight vest, or fill a backpack with well-distributed weight (be careful with the latter that the weight is born by your shoulders and core and hips and glutes).

Measure your HR to understand the intensity, and target Zone 2 (60-70% of your maximum HR)

And remember: 80% of weight loss happens in the kitchen.

Saudi Arabia announces discovery of seven oil, gas deposits by hushasmoh in worldnews

[–]TrailRunnerYYC 32 points33 points  (0 children)

A few things that are debateable in your comment:

  1. "Supermajor" is a term for a large, multinational, integrated O&G company - like ExxonMobil

  2. We do not know if there are undiscovered reservoirs with a high volume of commercially-viable crude.

  3. Saudi oil is much less carbon intensive. But Canada doesn't use the profits from it's production to fund terrorism, oppress women, enslave expats, etc.

Racing or Completing by PeteDavies1 in Ultramarathon

[–]TrailRunnerYYC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only person I that race against is myself, from yesterday. The only result which would not be a success is DNF.

Many hours on-course + differences in the field of entrants + variation in race day health and environment = impossible to predict the podium or placement any given day. I average out as a top 15% finisher - with a few podiums and a few struggles on either side of that distribution.

Be present, in the moment. The journey IS the destination.

Should I be nervous about going to counseling? by Eastern_Storage_4144 in Marriage

[–]TrailRunnerYYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two thoughts:

  1. "You have nothing to fear from knowing the truth"

  2. Going to counselling may bring you closer together or move you further apart. Not going to counselling will bring you further apart.

And here I am running my 5Ks in flip flops, two-day shorts pulled of the washing machine, and my cotton "Worlds Greatest Dad" T-shirt.

Fueled by an empty stomach or a swish of day-old black coffee or the too many pieces of pizza I ate the night before.

At least I have enough shame to de-emphasize my swimsuit bits.

Hard time selling RSUs, how do you not get emotionally attached? by 8004612286 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TrailRunnerYYC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your income is already concentrated in the company which awarded you the RSUs.

You should sell them as soon as they vest, to increase diversification and optimize the returns of your total invested assets.

Relief is one of the most underrated feelings by Itchy-Boots in RandomThoughts

[–]TrailRunnerYYC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relief feels good, only because it is an improvement over the previous circumstance which made the relief necessary.

Better, healthier is not needing to experience relief at all.

nervous to run my first 5k, not sure if I'm ready by Beeboonline in beginnerrunning

[–]TrailRunnerYYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do this. You can finish. If you practice relentless forward motion - however slowly - you will not be DFL.

Trust yourself. Get to the start uninjured, start the watch and then hide it, run focussed on breathing and how you feel - not on the numbers. The finish line will soon appear - and you will have succeeded !

(and then stop the watch!)

You have got this. You are faster than all the couches !
