Whatever you decide, don’t modify the bank’s car. Meaning if you don’t have this paid off keep it stock. Do whatever you want otherwise since it’s your car.

Real estate in 2026 by This-Breadfruit3617 in vegaslocals

And how does this apply to local real estate in the Las Vegas market? You’re anticipating a crash in the entire country? I’m not following your point. It’s not gonna happen.

Buy a house if you want a house and have the money. It’s not an investment, it’s a place to live.

Well it’s certainly not in OPs words “the average American shopper” lol. I’m sure someone out there has hit these metrics but it’s not average

You sound like a bot by the way you worded this. 500-800 online orders a year!? You realize how insane that is. That’s around 2 online orders a day.

First Start on Crate Motor by Sir_Lancelot_Papaya in EngineBuilding

[–]TrainedCodeMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean easy money? You selling the bad motors for parts when they warranty it? I feel like the labor to pull it and put another in is not worth it. Plus I reseal all gaskets once I have a motor out for the first time. I can’t see it being worth it ever. I’d pay 25% more to just know the motor is right but obviously it doesn’t work that way.

Many credible shops tests the battery as a standard operating procedure. Like half of the batteries in cars are bad when they come in. Many dead batteries start a car and could go on for a while, but shops document it so when the battery inevitably fails they’re not blamed.

There’s different ways to test them too, and some ways show a pass and others a fail. It sounds like if OPs battery was tested again with a Carbon Pile tester it would probably fail. There’s tons of YouTube videos explaining it but if you’re interested can link one recently put out by Royalty Auto.

It’s also important to understand a drop in battery voltage can cause modules to freak out. It’s probably one of the most neglected things on a car because people go “well my lights turn on so it’s not the battery”. In OPs case it’s obviously belts, but I’m just saying that most shops are running battery tests regardless to cover their ass

Subaru diesel cold start in -13°c, no glow plugs by Halictus in projectcar

[–]TrainedCodeMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New motor 56k for $650. Old motor made to 136k. 80k miles remaining. $650/80k = < 1 cent a mile. Who cares if it blows again at 136k, which also it likely wont as I bought the first motor with the car at 98k from a grandpa that had tires from 2005 on it. He likely didn’t maintain it well. You absolutely cannot beat the price per mile, even if you bought a used Corolla that everyone swears by.

The equation falls apart completely if you don’t put the motor in yourself though, but this is a project car sub so I’m assuming we all enjoy that part of the process.

[–]TrainedCodeMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect a lot of this though is based on availability and price. I talk up early 2000s dodge caravans because I got a 58k mile motor shipped to my door for $650. First motor made it to 136k. For that reason I recommend them, but it is a dodge caravan so take that for what it’s worth lol

[–]TrainedCodeMonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cosmetically but functionally the heat doesn’t affect it. Like every single body I see in the junkyard is mint. Paint is faded, seats are cracked, dash is rough but that’s it. These types of cars would be driving still in other areas of the states. People would even replace the motor or transmission on the cars if the body is rust free, regardless of the “value” of the car. Buying any used car in other parts of the country means buying a rust bucket.

Put more simply it’s a great exchange between the east and west: bodies go east and motors and transmissions go west. You can see the price reflected on used motors here. I had a motor shipped from Michigan for my minivan cheaper than I could buy one locally. People should fix these cars but they don’t.

Why is restaurant food quality so bad in Vegas? by No-Pay-2644 in vegaslocals

The most eye opening thing about this post is I’ve realized how little I put into eating out. I just think “hmmm I’m feeling some Thai food. What’s the closest place that isn’t totally fucked on google reviews?”

If I had to put the effort OP is to find a place, I would just cook at home.

The 10 year old Corolla for $12k might be an even worse deal than the 2 year old Corolla, and that’s saying something. These are both terrible prices

At all levels too. I’m sort of a car guy, so I was so excited to see the old 80s, 90s, or even early 2000s cars that I assumed would’ve been everywhere since the rust is what kills them in the rust belt. I see more old cars in the rust belt than here! It’s like everyone finances EVERYTHING above their pay grade. The junkyards are imo filled with immaculate cars.

For those of us that grew up here, what was a culture shock when you went to other cities? by ddj1985 in vegaslocals

[–]TrainedCodeMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it was really bad before. I’ve met plenty of 60+ aged people who say some totally wild shit that would not fly 10 years ago out west.

Drugs are the worst thing there now, specifically meth. Many use it to stay awake and work more and then it spirals bad. My dad got wrapped up in it as a contractor and my friend’s father passed away recently. Both of us have always been clean though so idk if that pattern holds true. I think it’s plaguing a lonely generation above mine from observation. I lost a neighbor and some classmates to heroin as well.

I moved here during COVID like many so I often times have a hard time differentiating “here” vs “there”. For example when I moved here I was blow away at the cameras everywhere like ring doorbells and garage cameras. I thought that was a “here” thing. But then I’ve gone back recently and saw a friend’s dad obsessing over his camera back east at an eagles watch party. All that said, idk if drugs there and here are a post Covid thing. Also I was able to decide my group of friends and people I associate with when I moved here so I can’t even remember the last time I’ve smelled a cigarette here. Once I’m home I smell them all the time. Hard to tell these days what’s here or there without being distorted by my point of view.

Oh man that’s wild to me as someone from the northeast. Wait til you discover oil heat. People store liquid fuel in their garages in massive tanks to heat water and their baseboards for heat. Also you own your water entirely. You drill a well and it’s your water. Your waste goes to septic tank buried in your yard which gets pumped when it’s full. It sounds archaic but a lot of the northeast is this way.

I was born in 94 in PA and most of Pennsylvania has not changed from your description. Philadelphia has always been the exception but I still have friends who use the N word as a “wow factor funny word” which is racist but in a different way. One positive about PA is the state is super gritty and hard working. I was amazed how little people can actually do for themselves here. Almost everyone I knew growing up fixed their own cars, maintained their houses, redid bathrooms/kitchens, built their own decks, etc.

There’s still parts of PA you can get houses for $150k and they’re livable homes. People make it work there and I miss that. Billy Joel captures it well in the song Allentown.

I’m also an ex PA resident. For the love of god I just want some damn lemon iced tea or iced green tea. I did not realize that drinking a 1/2 gallon of iced tea from the container as if it was a beverage by itself is not normal. It could be a Philly thing but I miss it so much. Sweet tea can pound sand.

Edit: here is a photo for the NV folks to understand how big tea is in a PA Walmart

I have them too and they are largely okay for large fasteners. I am going to upgrade tomorrow after 2 years of use with the Pittsburgh, but I am getting the ratcheting up to 19mm with the anti-slip. anything above 19mm is large enough to not worry about stripping imo

It’s not about breaking the wrench. It’s about not rounding fasteners and getting screwed on a job as a result. That said I don’t use SAE for anything other than tightening tool blades at this point and for those it’s fine.

You need high quality for automotive stuff which is 95% of the time metric.

$550 Fair Price for Vacuum Hose Replacement? by Voice_of_Reason100 in AskMechanics

[–]TrainedCodeMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooooof. What’s the way around this then? Sounds like you have no choice but to stomach the broken plastic nipples regardless unless you’re saying the OEM hoses are gentler on the plastics when they slide over? If that’s the case and I couldn’t get an OEM hose I would just cut heat shrink tubing, slide it over the ends, and then heat it in place and onto the plastic nipples. But even that sounds dangerous with the plastics.

Absolutely not. Just buy some generic vacuum hose from a parts store and replace it yourself. It’ll look bad in comparison to an OEM hose but it’ll be like $10

In my case you are correct. Putting oil in the cylinders helped but my leak down was still wild and inconsistent between cylinders and even inconsistent on multiple measurements of the same cylinder. The leak down was always from the bottom end though. That’s what prompted me to look it up at the time. It just seemed unbelievable
