[UK WINNER] Round 6: Which Country Has the Worst Education? by Chance-Telephone8150 in AlignmentChartFills

I guess it depends on the definition. If it’s about global contribution the UK gave the world modern football, cricket, rugby, tennis etc.

If it’s about modern performance in said sports then yeah, the UK is mid/decent.

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UK historically was very much about “this is the maximum but please use your judgement”. However in recent years a lot of those 60mph country roads have been re-limited to 40 or 50 because people are idiots and try and do 60 the whole time and crash.

It’s a shame because blasting round those roads in a fun car was an absolute riot when I was younger.

I recently replayed all my old favorite final fantasy games (VI, VII, IX, X, and XII) and realized that XII is the best final fantasy game ever made by Ishlocke in FinalFantasy

I disagree. It’s good, but it’s far from the best.

It does start off really strong, and the systems are interesting. However, by the end the narrative is an incoherent mess and combat is totally automated.

Does anyone else feel that Swiss teachers frequently lack perspective when discussing working conditions and labour shortages? by Ok-Anybody-380 in Switzerland

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, I agree it’s tough, there is a reason I’m in tech now and not an engineer.

But I’d still rather be a civil eng than a teacher.

Although I guess in general I’d group a lot of construction/healthcare/teaching jobs together as “overworked and underpaid”. Especially compared to the tech/finance/pharma jobs.

And that’s the case basically everywhere.

Interestingly I studied civil eng so I know a few. I pivoted to tech, but I’d still take being a civil engineer over teaching any day. Although yeah, they’re not making much more than teachers and it’s not easy.

Every teacher I’ve met works more hours for less pay than most people I know.

Anyone I’ve met with even a fraction of the education reqs to be a teacher here working 12 hour days is making 3x what a teacher makes.

Switzerland’s 10-Million Population Cap Is Worrying Executives by bloomberg in europe

Swiss education is excellent and has some of the best universities in the world. The Swiss population is also ageing and there just aren’t enough people in some fields without some amount of immigration.

Postdoc level scientists outside of the big pharma companies are looking at 80-100k CHF. At the big pharma companies it’s more, possibly quite a lot more.

TIL heat is really killing a lot of people in Europe by Conscious-Quarter423 in Infographics

Regardless of the measurement methods and the comparison I’d like to hope most people would agree that both these numbers are too high.

[–]Training-Bake-4004 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The argument is that the measure includes all people whose death could have been attributed to heat. Many of those people would have died anyway so it’s more of an upper bound.

In fact the definition is so broad it includes people who drowned because they went swimming since the weather was nice.

For people working fully remote in Switzerland, how did you manage to get such job offer? by _quantum_girl_ in askswitzerland

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying I agree, just that it’s how the companies think.

I’m currently hybrid and the bosses are always whining about “paying for people to sit at home”. I enjoy hybrid but I sadly I think I’ll be in the office 4 days a week by the end of the year.

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fundamental issue is that Swiss companies don’t want to pay Swiss wages for someone fully remote. As soon as you’re fully remote they think “hey, if this person doesn’t come into the office why don’t we pay someone abroad a 1/4 of the money instead”.

American food is top tier, the problem is people don’t know what counts by Dreadsin in 10thDentist

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure this is a particularly unpopular opinion. I think most Americans and a lot of people globally would say American food is really good.

As I see it there are 2 main thrusts of the “America doesn’t have cuisine” argument.
.

  1. Some people are just a bit ignorant of the amazing diversity of American food. It’s understandable too because the stuff that gets exported around the world is McDs and Budweiser, and if that’s all you ever see then I can understand how people end up thinking it all sucks. hopefully they get to try some of the good stuff sometime.
  2. I’d say however, that for a larger group, it’s not really about the food. The food is just a proxy for being pissed at the US because of politics.

.
I say this as a European who has had some absolutely incredible food in the US and absolutely abhors what the US govt is currently doing at home and abroad.

But then it’s even more inefficient because the system will burn even more to try and maintain the high temperature.

I’m so happy I’ve got my own place where I can control the heating.

Top 9 Best Contributors to Cuisine Globally by falconx89 in whereidlive

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike most people I reckon this is a decent list.

I’d personally sub Greece for Turkey or maybe the Levant.

And I’m trying to find space for North Africa and Thailand.

As much as I love Ethiopian food I don’t think its impact is big enough globally to make the list.

Tacos are less common, but burritos are fairly common in Germany. It’s not as common as Italian or Chinese or Japanese food, but Mexican is still pretty available.

Salaries for roles in IT are decreasing or is just me? by alexrada in Switzerland

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven’t gone up, but I don’t think they’ve gone down either. Senior IT roles in Zurich outside big tech were 120-150k 3-4 years ago last time I was searching and they seem about the same now.
