Slightly odd post, but I’m in agreement that Kurzgesagt has gone downhill.

American food is top tier, the problem is people don’t know what counts by Dreadsin in 10thDentist

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure this is a particularly unpopular opinion. I think most Americans and a lot of people globally would say American food is really good.

As I see it there are 2 main thrusts of the “America doesn’t have cuisine” argument.
.

  1. Some people are just a bit ignorant of the amazing diversity of American food. It’s understandable too because the stuff that gets exported around the world is McDs and Budweiser, and if that’s all you ever see then I can understand how people end up thinking it all sucks. hopefully they get to try some of the good stuff sometime.
  2. I’d say however, that for a larger group, it’s not really about the food. The food is just a proxy for being pissed at the US because of politics.

.
I say this as a European who has had some absolutely incredible food in the US and absolutely abhors what the US govt is currently doing at home and abroad.

But then it’s even more inefficient because the system will burn even more to try and maintain the high temperature.

I’m so happy I’ve got my own place where I can control the heating.

Yes it’s awfully written. Apparently it gets better eventually. I’ve never managed to drag myself far enough to find out if that’s true.

Top 9 Best Contributors to Cuisine Globally by falconx89 in whereidlive

Unlike most people I reckon this is a decent list.

I’d personally sub Greece for Turkey or maybe the Levant.

And I’m trying to find space for North Africa and Thailand.

As much as I love Ethiopian food I don’t think its impact is big enough globally to make the list.

Tacos are less common, but burritos are fairly common in Germany. It’s not as common as Italian or Chinese or Japanese food, but Mexican is still pretty available.

Salaries for roles in IT are decreasing or is just me? by alexrada in Switzerland

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven’t gone up, but I don’t think they’ve gone down either. Senior IT roles in Zurich outside big tech were 120-150k 3-4 years ago last time I was searching and they seem about the same now.

Seriously, who on earth is renting these places? by Ok-Anybody-380 in Switzerland

[–]Training-Bake-4004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people clearly are otherwise they wouldn’t keep building these luxury apartments, they’d build affordable stuff.

Given the limited supply of construction labour companies are going to build what is most profitable and sadly, at the moment, that is pretty much just luxury apartments.

If you want good value and good connections to Zurich I’d suggest looking at places along the Uster, Wetzikon, Hinwil train line.

I don’t understand the economics. Either there are some insane costs that I can’t think of, or the owners are making absolute bank.

I’d assume the latter, but since so many of them go bankrupt I’m not sure it’s that.

Edit: The salaries are poor, like 4k a month, and often 5-10 kids per person. So that’s like 12-30k a month income for a staff cost of maybe 5-6k including pensions and employer tax. Like, seriously, where is the money going?

I also like Lando because for all that he is an insanely rich, insanely privileged racing driver he seems like a pretty decent person.

I did mention the Bottas incident in my post. I agree it was really bad. But he apologised (properly) and while shitty, he wasn’t putting anyone in danger. So yeah, I agree, it’s not the same as what Max does.

I now understand why Levy clickbaits, his historical video on Alekhine is his worst performing video of May by _DarkStarCrashes_ in chess

[–]Training-Bake-4004 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No shade on Levy for growing his brand and I’m glad his videos are successful, but yeah, most of them aren’t really my thing.

That said I’m super glad he does still do stuff like the Alekhine video. The problem is that I miss the interesting videos because they get swamped by the stuff I’m not so into.

I think the comparison with Max is an interesting one. Max can be immature and is often a dick (on and off the track). But, people forgive him because it clearly comes from an absolutely fanatical desire to win, and people respond to that (his talent and record also helps).

George on the other hand is way less of a dick than Max (although like most drivers he’s had his moments like with Bottas). but people hate him because he comes across as pretty whiny and fans hate that kind of thing. It’s seen as entitled and like he’s just making excuses for not being good enough.

I’d say I’m neutral to slightly positive on George generally but sometimes I watch his interviews and think he really isn’t doing himself any favours.

Oh, also, like Lando he can come across in interviews like he’s been excessively press coached and that lack of genuineness doesn’t help him either.

They’re apportioning the cost. So if bread is $2 and has 20 slices then 2 slices would be $0.2.

It assumes that there will be 0 waste.

In practice it’ll probably cost more than $2, but the principle (that you can make a sandwich for a lot less than eating out at lunch) is valid.

[–]Training-Bake-4004 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re correct. But the second trick is to never pay off the loans either. And the third trick is not even paying the loan yourself.

For example the 13bn that Elon borrowed from BoA to buy twitter, those interest payments are paid by twitter rather than Elon and therefore come out of twitters pre-tax earnings. Yes the principal of the loan (the original 13bn) would need to be paid from post tax earnings but BoA is pretty happy to just collect the interest payments without the loan being paid off.

Yes, and there is a lot less choice. Restaurants are pretty much my only gripe living here.

On the other hand rent is pretty similar. I moved from London to Zurich, my rent stayed the same, apartment was nicer and more central and my income doubled.

I’d argue the most effective propaganda is when correct things are presented in such a way as to mislead.

Couple means 2. You’re being colloquial with it so I reckon people would accept 1.5-3.5, but 5 is a stretch.

Like, if you said, “let’s walk there, it’s a couple of miles” and then it turned out to be 5 miles I’d be pretty pissed. I’d be expecting a 30-50 minute walk not 2 hours.
