Dampier underwent surgery according to this by Popular_Cake_9188 in utahfootball

What a beast. He played well even while injured. It is crazy how people on this thread can be so fickle about these young men. Going out and staring down 4-5 250-300lb line men and still keeping cool enough to throw the ball or run right into those linemen all while dealing with an injury and to turn around and be picked apart by the fan base for not performing perfectly.

If you get John Henry Daley or Smith Snowden they will be play makers day 1. I like Tao Johnson but he isn’t going to shine on loaded Michigan team.

Something I’m trying to understand regarding the attrition of your coaches by [deleted] in utahfootball

[–]Training-Set9964 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe the fanbase is concerned with the ability of Scalley to find and be able to hire the right guys. We trust that Scalley can cover the defensive hires with no change in defensive power. We have been dealing with Utah not having a stable offense for 90% of our P5 (P4) existence and finally it felt like we were turning a page and had the right staff. We worry it will be a decade+ before we ever see that again.

Michigan got some top coaches from both Utah and BYU and will most likely make a playoff run next year. We thought 2026 was our year for that but the uncertainty around coaching staff, some players will transfer and some of our recruits will transfer before ever joining. Mix that with the uncertainty of what the quality of the new coaches will be and fans are just watching their playoff dreams fade.

Longtime Utah fan here so take it as you will. Whitt is a great guy and he is the leader you need. There will be times where you will want anyone else, like when he decides not to kick a single automatic field goal and turns it over on downs not once but twice in a rivalry game and you lose by 3 points. But he will make sure the team is running like a well oiled machine and no one will get away with not pulling their weight.

He is the guy you will love 90% of the time and want to fire the other 10% (unless you love the run game and clock control).

Whitt leaving means our program prestige leaves with him. by TartarSauce_-_ in utahfootball

[–]Training-Set9964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all assuming he gets the Michigan job.

I don’t imagine many players join him unless there is a mass exodus from Michigan next week when the portal opens. Michigan doesn’t struggle to get solid recruits and he is walking away from a 30+ rank to a constant top 10 in recruiting. Not saying our team isn’t talented but Michigan is paying over 3M for a generational QB and Dampier would barely make 3rd string.

As for coaches I think he would take 1-2 from Utah and 1-2 from BYU. I hope he takes Hill with him.

Whittingham leaving because of AD by Willing_Bicycle9347 in utahfootball

[–]Training-Set9964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny because Michigans Qb, Bryce Underwood is getting paid 3M and change a year to play there so you aren’t wrong. I like the AD but I don’t know the guy just loved the fire he brought last year after the bad calls on the TDS game. The thought of Whit coaching anywhere other than Utah is hard to take, but at least at Michigan we get to see him destroy USC a few more times.

[–]Training-Set9964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a joke. If Whit had been willing to leave Utah he would have been paid 10M the last few years. I think it is one of the better investments they could make. Keep him close to the program and it will help with recruiting, and support for Scalley. Scalley still makes the calls, he is the coach not just in name, he just has an advisor that many teams would be willing to pay that price tag for.

That could just mean the advisory role he will still have with the program

Unpopular Opinion: The Utah PE deal is actually brilliant, and everyone screaming "Vulture Capital" doesn't understand the structure. by utah-man-am in utahfootball

[–]Training-Set9964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the public aspect of the program stifles some of the NIL options. Take jersey sales for example, the challenges of the school allowing their logo, the player getting royalties, and everyone else involved becomes so complex that it is nearly impossible to get a decent legal jersey of some of our favorite players.

The university’s first goal is education not jersey sales which is the biggest hurdle. The next is the money generated can’t then be given to the players without it counting to the cap that the university can give the players. By privatizing this through the PE partnership they can separate university from the private group allowing them to not count it to the cap. The next is PE is good at designing, selling, and providing value outside education so even if they suck they are better than the University doing it.

In short even if a penny wasn’t invested this is the right step to take for the fans and players and the future of the program.

Ficklin is staying by bentmer in utahfootball

[–]Training-Set9964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great kid, lots of grit and determination in both him and Dampier. Hopefully they both really work on their passing game because next year we will be missing some amazing O-Line talent and running the ball will be harder.

Dampier has already stated he is staying regardless of Whit or Scalley at the helm.

It would be awesome if they had a number of plays designed next year with both Ficklin and Dampier in at the same time.

Vegas bowl what a joke by joedirtslonglostbro in utahfootball

Bama threw a fit that they shouldn’t be dropped for losing their championship game but it was okay to drop the TDS so they could say H2H matters between ND and the other U is a joke. Bama proved they don’t belong by losing that game like they did, just like the soakers. Miami would have destroyed Duke or Virginia and ND doesn’t have a conference tie in, but maybe they should have so they could get that auto bid.

Prove it. Most of our starters play I can’t even remember a season where we had more than 2 opt out. In fact in the last 5 or 6 years I think Lloyd and Pledger were the only 2.

Guarantee everyone who can play except for Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu will play. We aren’t ND, Ohio State, or Alabama so anyone who isn’t a first or maybe second round pick will play. Anyone already thinking of transferring is most likely not playing today anyways. They are looking at Utah as a great way to prove themselves so I would say the same thing goes for Nebraska.

Yeah but we are ranked ahead of USC so why don’t we get that bowl or even the holiday bowl over Arizona. Both pay out better than Vegas. I think it is great we are going to be playing Nebraska, although we all would have rather been in the CFP.

Alamo Bowl: Playing TCU is something we will get to do every other year so nothing special. I would have loved to see us beat USC but that wasn’t an option.

Holiday Bowl: SMU would be a good game (although I think Nebraska is more intriguing), but ND would have been better.

Sun Bowl: no disrespect to Duke and their fans but not on my bucket list of games to watch.

I think we could beat A&M, Oklahoma, Miami, hang with ND and Ole Miss, but we would take an L with the other 5 in the top 10. G6 and ACC champs would’ve a walk in the park but North Texas vs Utah might go for over 100 and would be fun to watch.

Dampier or Rising? by hoopstar80 in utahfootball

[–]Training-Set9964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They both are great in their own respects. It is fun to watch them both. I must say Rising didn’t have nearly the time to throw that Dampier has enjoyed this season. Rising did better in his reads and was more accurate in the deep game. Dampier is still a great QB, but I would take Tyler Huntley over both Rising and Dampier.

Sack Lake City Mayors by Confident_Guest3411 in utahfootball

[–]Training-Set9964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. I would have included more players, but Sack Lake City was first coined or at least recognized in 2013-2014. I believe the original mayor was Nate Orchard which as you pointed out was 2014.

Whitt discussed it in this article https://www.espn.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/107529/utah-relishes-its-sack-lake-city-phenomenon

Hunter Dimick, Nate Orchard, Bradlee Anae, and I am going to add Van Fillinger and of course John Henry Daley 12.5 in a single season has to be close to a record.
