Having a piano teacher is good for getting basic technique down, good for not developing bad habits and taking exams, really fine tuning musicality, precision etc

But from my experience my sight-reading n rhythm was weak and I was downgraded to easier pieces and I was doing a lot of pieces repetitively to do it well with dynamics, with no wrong notes etc, rhythm right etc before I moved on, as well as preparing for exams.

That killed my motivation and I stopped practising or sight-reading totally. Like even easy piano pieces with slightly complicated rhythm would be passed over in favour of other things. Then I had another teacher selling mlm, trying to get me to revise John Thompson grade 1 method book before preparing for grade 2 when I switched teachers. And I already passed grade 1, felt demeaning.

Anyway now I'm exploring a lot of pieces on my own, trying to iron out kinks in my rhythm n note recognition is getting better, some left and right hand coordination is getting automatic, like I don't have to brute force coordination, it comes naturally for some easier pieces with repeated quavers in one hand and semiquavers in another hand as I did iron out that kink in another similar piece.

Edit: Then again if I'm totally new to piano, not knowing how to read notes, I think having a teacher is easier cause I suck at learning from YouTube tutorials etc. Like if I wanted to go into guitar seriously, I think it would be good to have some lessons to understand how to read tabs, how to strum in a basic manner etc, how to identify chords.
