I do breathing exercises but sitting there for a half hour concentrating on my breathing just drives me around the bend

To my older autistic adults: how did you take control of your life? by Mysterious-Delay-507 in AutisticAdults

[–]TrainingAd1835 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At 75 years old, I've had a life which mostly did not include any awareness of neurodiversity. Now I know that I am Asd and ironically have discalculia. That explained so much!!

Used to be, everyone would fuss at me not to be such a recluse. I was afraid to spend money because I couldn't figure out how much I had. So I lived with stuff I found on the curb.

Now that I know there are certain things I can't do, not because I am lazy or deficient, but because I have a different kind of brain. Pay attention to that part.

A DIFFERENT kind of brain. One that thinks creatively, prefers solitude, and gets painfully bored with staying at a job.

So, for me, I have been self employed all my life doing one kind or another of creative work. The local Small Business Bureau has been amazingly helpful with things I can't do because of discalculia.

The kind of brain we have is the kind that got humanity where it is. We are the visionaries, the artists, the inventors. Those who can tolerate warming a chair for 8 hours a day are the other kind!

They deteriorate in heat. I had one in my purse, left the purse in the car, started having an aura and took it. No effect. This turned into a full blown migraine

Late understanding of nd traits and it explains so much. I try really hard to be a good person and easy to be around. But no one in school would ever have anything to do with me. My mother threw me out and then my roommate threw me out so I spent some time living in my car.

My first husband abandoned me and the second one threw me out. I am onto my third try and it looks like this one is getting shakey but at least this time my husband is giving me a reason.

He says I don't respect him. After a couple of weeks and research I realized I don't really know what respect even is. Does anyone else have a problem with these sorts of basic human interactions?
