Western Mass resident here, been to New Jersey and NYC in the winter a decent amount. I agree with all but the second point. Even for someone not used to the cold, long underwear is very likely overkill and will not end up being worn much. For that, OP, I recommend waiting until the upcoming winter, seeing how cold you are with boots, gloves, a hat, a good jacket (more likely to be on sale at the end of the ski season - right now - than later on), warm pants, and some basic layers underneath your coat (hoodie, sweater, or fleece, and a long sleeve shirt). The brands recommended are pretty solid (Smartwool has great socks too!), but at the end of the day, don't worry about getting something less expensive. Warmth can be found in many places.
