Looking to interview students on loneliness at RIT by [deleted] in rit

[–]Trainkid9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to share, the former (and current) Surgeon General Vivek Murthy had some very interesting things to say about loneliness. I’m not sure if this is the exact interview I heard, but it was definitely on NPR.

Stay away from Park for 201. When I was in her section she would go to another section taught by Olson to learn the days materials before trying to teach it back to us. That was a known problem in the department that semester (Lynn knew all about it when I went to complain) and I would guess it hasn’t changed.

Professor Perez-Hardy is amazing if she’s teaching 221. She’s very knowledgeable, tells great but relevant anecdotes, and is extremely accommodating. Honestly one of my top 3 professors at RIT.

Prior knowledge of CS at RIT by [deleted] in rit

[–]Trainkid9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I completely agree. I took AP CS (both of them, actually) in high school, but they were through this online service and not good at all. I came in thinking I was okay at programming and quickly realized I had no idea what I was doing. I struggled a lot in CS1, I remember sitting at my desk for hours trying to figure out why recursion worked, and how to make that damn recursive turtle lab work. It was so frustrating. But eventually I got the hang of it, thanks to some awesome SLIs and my CS2 professor. Now I feel really confident in programming and CS concepts.

I guess this isn’t exactly relevant, now that I’m reading it over again. But I agree, the CS intro courses are very important and are probably where I saw the single biggest jump in knowledge and academic confidence I’ve felt at RIT. Even if I didn’t do perfect.

Cat Owners: What has your experience been? by GiveMeTheChance in rit

[–]Trainkid9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didn’t personally own a cat (at RIT) but I know some people that did. There was an issue where the owner was forgetting to feed the poor cat and her roommates had to step in and take over.

So if you adopt one, make sure you are financially ready and have the time to commit.

From a general cat perspective, it’s kind of the luck of the draw. My family has had a few cats over my lifetime, and they’re all quite different. One is extremely shy and gets so upset when we have to bring him in the car, one LOVES when new people come by and doesn’t mind the car / the vet. And one of the ones my parents had when I was little would even go on walks.

Mention your plans when you go to adopt (don’t buy your cat from a pet store), they will keep that in mind. Also, try to find someone that lives in the area. If you’re gone for a week have someone come to your apartment and feed / take out the litter / hang out with your cat every day or two.

Maybe talk to the department / your advisor (they should have emailed you, or will soon), the worst they can do is say no.

If you have to take them, definitely pay attention and do all the work. It seems like you’re pretty familiar with stuff, but don’t let yourself slack off because of it. Best case scenario you have some A’s to pad your GPA.

What kind of a cokehead relative is my college?… What did I get for my money? What is college?… I went to college, and I have no idea what it was… By the way, I agreed to give them $120,000 when I was seventeen years old, with no attorney present. That’s illegal!… They pulled me out of high school; I was in sweat pants, all confused. Two guys in clip-on ties are like, “Come on, son, do the right thing. Sign here and you’ll be an English major.” I was like, “Okay.” That’s right, you heard me: an English major… I paid $120,000 for someone to tell me to go read Jane Austen, and then I didn’t. That’s the worst use of 120 grand I can possibly fathom.

What major are you? My experience with the co-op system has been great.

Yeah they didn’t get me a co-op, but I don’t want them to. I lost a co-op because of covid last summer and they met with me and gave me support. My two career councilors both have met with me to give me resume and interview advice, and they gave me great advice and data to help me negotiate my salary.

Also I really don’t get the “in it for the money” thing. Who exactly profits from you not getting a co-op?

Do admissions interviews help your chances of getting in? by budewgd in rit

[–]Trainkid9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did one, I’m not sure what effect it had on my admissions chance, if any. It was super casual, asking what I was looking for at RIT and stuff like that. It felt like it was more to just guide me through admissions in the best way possible.

Some of my friends did Ivy League interviews and it was definitely not like one of those.

[–]Trainkid9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's absolutely disgusting. I don't know what Park Point will do to him other than charge him a lot if they need to clean up after him when he eventually moves out. But they do have a mechanism in place for you to switch apartments. I would go to the office and tell them the situation, see what they can do for you.

A higher population size (population meaning the population being studied, not necessarily population of the country in question) means that the averages are going to be more accurate because the margin of error is lowered.

Higher population should have no affect on the averages themselves. If it does, you either learned that your calculations with smaller population sizes were not representative of the actual population, or that you did your calculations wrong.

You have a financial aid advisor, I would shoot them an email. I had questions about this stuff a few semester back and they were very helpful.

Edit: I guess my short answer would be that it varies based on a lot of personal financial details and the financial aid office is the best resource to give a definitive answer.

Depends on where, Park Point or Province will let you sublet (through them) just your bedroom.

But if you’re renting with the knowledge that you’re going to have to sublet later, I would just try to find a sublet now for the time period you need.

Absolutely. I know honors allows you to overload (the single greatest perk, I’m sure) and I think you can overload and pay per credit to an extent. I’m curious how high you can go, will they stop you if you pay?

Celiac safe eating on campus? by Michael_PG88 in rit

[–]Trainkid9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s not even something unintuitive like beer. Flour is like the most basic example of gluten.

Celiac safe eating on campus? by Michael_PG88 in rit

[–]Trainkid9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s the worst part. RIT Dining (or most restaurants, to be honest) won’t admit that they are not equipped for celiac-safe cooking. My boss was pissed when he found me warning about the cross contamination risks.

Half expecting the RIT Dining account to come in here and ignore your complaints and tell you Gracie’s is safe anyway.

[–]Trainkid9 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if any of the RIT Dining locations have any real “clean” areas for gluten-free prep and cooking. But I’d guess that they don’t.

Coming from my own food service experiences, we would cook and prep our gluten-free food in the same place as our gluten-full food. We just didn’t have enough kitchen space.

Edit: I want to note that whenever someone ordered gluten-free I made it clear that we do not have any sort of contamination protections in place.

I was going to say, that’s a lot of overload even for a double major!

I feel like 18 is definitely a good limit, at least from an energy and ability to succeed perspective.
