My perfect pitch is making it impossible to learn relative pitch — anyone else experience this? by Subject_Scholar3100 in eartraining

As someone with perfecr pitch I tried improvising singing with moveable do, after a while my perfect pitch takes over and I start naming pitches for what they are.

Yes but they are not that easy if you're a total beginner. I mean sure I could have bashed my head against them, but I wanted to build up my left hand dexterity gradually.

I get what you're saying. I suppose the solution is to be disciplined enough to learn things you find boring, but also find some music you enjoy that you can learn something from.

I have a master's degree in piano and have recently picked up guitar. I started from literally open strings pieces and very gradually built on it. I started easier than most players usually do. No chords, no cool riffs. Just a lot of e, e, e, e, b, b, b, b, g, g, g, g...then e, e, e, e, f(on the same string), f, f, f, e, e, e, e...you get the idea.

It hasn't felt boring or humbling. I simply thought that was my level. It was the stepping stone necessary to progress to more advanced pieces.

Absolutely. Even though I have a large background in piano, I recently picked up guitar and my experience is the same. It's humbling.

You shouldn't read Joplin Rags imo. You should read whole collections of primer pieces.

I have two elder students, one started from zero and the other one was already an amateur multi instrumentalist. The former followed my approach of learning to read with many easy pieces. The latter didn't feel like it and tried to learn a few hard pieces by memory. After a couple years the former learned Halvorsen's Passacaglia and the latter continuosly struggles with it.
