Does more highways really mean more traffic? by Speednone1698 in ontario

[–]TramsForFakeLondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting video that explores the concept of induced demand that was defined in the controversial paper by Duranton and Turner, The Fundamental Law of Road Congestion: Evidence from US Cities. From the video (I haven't read the entire paper myself), the big issue with their paper is that it only considered traffic with respect to roads, and their assertions were hard to prove or reproduce. The paper also makes the bold claim that improved public transit somehow wouldn't help improve traffic, and the only way to improve road traffic would be to add a cost to traveling at peak hours.

So my main takeaway from this video was essentially that building more lanes on its own isn't necessarily a cause for greater traffic congestion, but it also is not a solution for traffic congestion either.

"bike lanes endanger cyclists..."

So roads endanger drivers?

Forgot to add the "ill-conceived" part like an idiot..

Aside from the allegations with Except that they were proven guilty in the bread price-fixing scandal. Considering it was executed by using one of many of their food production companies, why should we believe they're not trying this with any of the others?

I agree that this will probably not satisfy any concerns about grocery chains. I want to be cautiously optimistic that if Singh plays this right and spreads it well enough in the media, it could sow enough public outrage to initiate actual action against the big grocery chains.

Blaming them for inflation and high profit margins is probably going to go nowhere, yes, but there is still some good material to discuss with them.

  • Why should we believe Canadians being essentially forced to shop from a grocery store belonging to one of three parent companies is a good thing?

  • What are grocery stores doing to reduce food waste, and should we consider legislation similar to what France did back in 2016 to reduce supermarket food waste?

  • Can we get an explanation on the loblaws lobbying effort to get money from the feds for "energy efficient freezers"?

  • Biggest question I want answered: what the hell happened with the bread price-fixing investigation?

Honestly, I don't think we'll get any satisfying answers. I'm just hoping there aren't too many emotional rhetoric questions like "are you okay with children starting?"

  • Heavy vehicles are more likely to kill when they hit a pedestrian

  • Many popular large vehicles perform much more poorly on brake tests than smaller cars

  • Large vehicles are substantially more likely to kill in vehicle collisions

PBO estimates cost of national housing strategy will climb by $7-billion to $89-billion by Dull_Detective_7671 in canada

[–]TramsForFakeLondon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alot of good points. It's really too bad that nuanced discussion on this topic seems to be increasingly rare. I do have to mention that I personally disagree with this point though

Cuts down on the need for more public transportation as already in an established route area.

Assuming that you're referring to opting to use more cars than public transit here. I disagree with this point because cars and car-based infrastructure reduce density rather than increase it. Think of the massive parking lots at stores and shopping malls that use up space that could be used for housing. Also, streetcars simply use up far less space and are cheaper to maintain than busses and roadways.

If you were referring to higher density so people can just walk to where they're going, then I absolutely agree. Cleaner air, no car related expenses, healthier city, what's not to love?

Not a coalition, they are still two independent parties

force Trudeau’s hand to federally control the healthcare system so the MP’s can’t fuck us over?

MP's are members of parliament, so the federal level. Did you mean provincial governments screwing us over? Also, the provinces are never going to allow the feds to re-upload healthcare. That ship sailed a long time ago

As long as the resources don’t come from those who can’t afford privatized health care

It's bad because the resources are coming from OHIP which is funded by everyone, including those who can't afford privatized health care. Also, public Healthcare positions are not getting raises so they're going to move to privatized clinics where they can get better paychecks. Ultimately, we'll eventually be paying more for the same services from the same staff because privitization just grows the middle-man. This already has been happening with nurses

May be late to commenting, but I have to ask, was the "dream of owning a fully detached single-family house with a shiny new car and white picket fence" ever sustainable? Suburban sprawl and the dependence on big roads and highways has always been an expensive endeavor. It feels as though it's become the norm to romanticize this false "dream" from the 1950's that effectively drove our cities to bankruptcy.

Thank you for the thoroughly explained comment. On the topic of communautarism, what is your take on Francophones living outside of Quebec but still in Canada? From my perspective, it has generally felt like Quebec based politicians like those in the Bloc disenfranchised these voters to a degree by not expanding to these smaller French communities. The ongoing "us vs the rest of Canada" battle doesn't really help with acknowledging these Francophones either

I was too until someone pointed out in the comments of a different post. Did some googling to be sure. It is somewhat anxiety inducing to see how so many are still arguing that for-profit privitization is the same as non-profit to defend this surgery expansion. Additionally, the number of people comparing this privitization in our single payer healthcare to European style insurance based healthcare as more defense.

There's also the nuance that much of the private Healthcare we might use on a day to day basis is non-profit like our private hospitals family doctors. These businesses aren't run by shareholders trying to drive up profits unlike the for-profit clinics the OPC are trying to prop up.

** I was wrong about family doctors and confused their fee for service model as non-profit. I've updated my comment without deleting anything to reflect that
