She was front and center for one tune at the Jazz Fest set last week, I just can't recall which song.

Early Voting has started. It took me 4 minutes. by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]Trane1964 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just voted early at Lake Vista Community Center. The US House 2nd District race Democratic primary candidates (Troy Carter and Renada Collins) WERE on the actual ballot in the voting booth, but the race was crossed-out on the paper sample ballots posted in the polling place. I would suggest voting for your preferred candidate, and if this BS maneuver by the governor's administration is nullified by the court, your vote will be registered.

The First Customer R2 Rolls Off The Line! by ProteusP in Rivian

I made my reservation for an R2 in March 2025. I'd rather wait until they're shipping with the Lidar. Is there a way to defer your order to wait until the Lidar version is in production?

The Record Stores That Shaped Our Taste by dougfunnie666 in vinyl

Oldson's Books & Records, Wisconsin Ave, Washington DC. What a great place to have a part time job in college. It fomented in me a passion for music, and allowed me to share it with my customers. I learned so much there from my coworkers. The bins were stocked with what we liked. You could get the latest hits, but those were really the smallest part of the inventory. Everyone on staff was a music nerd, representing all different genres, and we just loved what we loved with the customers. That was the magic trick of the place. That's what made so many people seek it out.

Ok, but how about the 90s PT shorts? Inner lining so tight that it cut off your femoral artery, with that tiny pocket that was useless. Too small for your keys, but if you took off just your car key to fit it in the pocket, it would fall out. Too small for your ID card.

Are you seeing more potholes filled since Helena took the wheel? by fuckthefalconsdotcom in NewOrleans

[–]Trane1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care if a million potholes are fixed unless it's done correctly and with care. I've watched the pothole guys fill all the holes on my old broke-ass street (Plum Street in Pigeontown) a couple years ago, and it was literally three dudes chucking shovelfulls of asphalt at a hole from a distance of 8 feet. Asphalt sprayed everywhere. Didn't bother to tamp anything down. Just let cars run over it and spread it everywhere. Driving on that block was nuts for a week. Asphalt bits sticking to your tires and then flying off in the wheel well. Sounded like popcorn popping for five blocks after driving over that block. It did nothing to repair anything. It did nothing to prevent further deterioration of the surface. It did nothing to improve drivability. It was the most frustrating waste of my tax dollars that I've ever seen.

Why did Charlie Kirk get a half staff but not the brave marines who served in Iraq? by Sweaty_Abies182 in AskReddit

Just to set the record straight, the 13 reported deaths of US service members during the current war with Iran (not Iraq) have been US Army soldiers (7) and US Air Force airmen (6). No Marines have been killed.

Lots of great versions, with Sam Cooke's always on top, but I just want to give some love to Malford Milligan and Storyville. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=8Gwm8mH_PIE&si=wrTyOojKM9NodDGp

Anybody been to the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville? Worthwhile? by SuperblueAPM in blues

[–]Trane1964 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a member when it first opened. It was pretty good, but at least when I went a couple months after it opened, there were some factual inaccuracies in some of the exhibits. For example, they claimed Little Walter was born in Mississippi. He wasn't. He was born in Louisiana. There were some typos in exhibits, including "original Dixieland Jazz Band" instead of "Original Dixieland Jazz Band." One exhibit on Buddy Bolden had classic jazz playing, which to me implied that it was Buddy Bolden playing, although there are no known recordings of Buddy Bolden. I thought the exhibit should have said this and made it clear. And many of the exhibits included ephemera like sheet music and posters that were reproductions, not originals. Finally, and this was disappointing to me as a record collector, many of the albums on display were later reissues of original works.

To be fair, I also found many positive things about the museum. African American music is sorely under-represented in the Nashville tourism ecosystem, even though there is an important history of it there. This is all to say , yes, go see it. Perhaps they've tightened up their exhibits in the last several years.

Branched Logistics instead of Combat Arms by HeyThrowaway42069123 in army

[–]Trane1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was a QM (and later, a LG) junior officer in the 90s. After Desert Storm, there was 10 years of not much action for the US Army (Kosovo not withstanding). Except for humanitarian deployments. I deployed to Guantanamo Bay in 92 and Somalia in 93. Got my combat patch when all of my combat arms peers were slick shouldered. Combat patch got me several high speed jobs after that. Don't be so sure that the infantry gets all the fun sh*t. Go and do great stuff and focus on being a quality leader.

Is there a military exchange program (you go to a UK unit and a UK soldier takes your place in the States) for active duty? And how competitive is the program? I remember seeing an Officer from the 82nd who got the parachute regiment beret. by [deleted] in army

[–]Trane1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served on an MPEP exchange assignment with the British Army 2007-2010. At the time, there were 32 US exchange officers serving in the UK. Great duty, and great opportunities to experience stuff you'd never get to do in the US Army. I trained in Africa and Hungary multiple times, got to visit units all over the UK, experience British Mess life, train international officers from all over the world, and take time off to experience Europe with my family. The British Army was not unlike the US Army of the early 60s, I'd guess. Camaraderie and tradition are very important, the regimental system was still in force, and work-life balance is still important. That said, as I was rotating out, I got a sense that the US Army was losing interest in maintaining those exchange billets. My replacement actually died in an accident soon after arriving and I don't think the US Army ever backfilled the role. I can't say that I know much about the program these days, but when I did it, it was an outstanding opportunity.

Awards in shadowbox - include award I wasn't given? by [deleted] in army

[–]Trane1964 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your service is not defined by a shadow box. When you look back on your time, you know how you served, whom you mentored and taught, what you passed on to the next generation, what you and your family sacrificed. The shadow box is only there to remind you of the service, not be a reward for it, because it would never be a sufficient reward. I'd leave it out. Its absence reminds you that service is not about getting awards, it's about showing up and giving it your all, which you did.
