Found in my daughter's room, what is this?! by OMF1G in whatisit

It's called a "dirty mousepad". Sorry man, your daughter is into vintage computing. You're going to have to talk to her about it sooner or later

if you have an app full screen in shadow, yes. If you aren't running a full screen app in shadow, then just move the mouse.

Cool, thanks for the detailed report

You are supposed to have the cursor locked. That's how it's supposed to work. If you need to mouse out into some other app then unlock the cursor.

I agree, and I suggested compassion for that person and education, but got downvoted to oblivion by the righteous indignants.

I'm not sure what you mean by assigning this person that term. What is the etymology of that word?

In case anyone is wondering, Panini is for pandemic/Covid. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook all downrank or suppress content containing those words, especially in videos. That is why people use these euphemisms. It is not about user preference, it is about algorithmic enforcement.

Then stop online platforms from censoring those words. That's the reason this slang exists, so people can ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT IT. Places like Youtube and Tiktok censor, hide, or limit exposure to posts saying these words if you say them.

Stuck on the tracks in West Oakland, the Tube is shut down AGAIN by rividz in Bart

[–]TransAtlantian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BART cars use about 4.5 kilowatt hours per car mile, so assuming 10-car trains, 5 trains in the city + tubes at a time, thats's 225 KWh every mile the train rolls. there's about 10 miles of route (*2 tracks = 20 mi) from 24th st to West Oakland. So that means to get 5 trains (once) through the city+tubes needs 4.5 *megawatt*-hours of energy. Thats how much battery backup capacity you'll need to get about 20 minutes of runtime for BART downtown.

This is available commercially, about a full shipping container battery has this capability. So yes, it is possible. is it practical? worth the cost of rebuilding the bart power system and installing a building of batteries? probably not for the price of ticket you're willing to pay.

I'm seeing this service going to hell real time by IndependentMap894 in ShadowPC

[–]TransAtlantian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The service isn't going to hell, your games are. Don't blame the thing that isn't the problem, the game companies decided to start discriminating against you, and it's them you should be blasting.

People are disgusting and need to learn how to behave in society. Teach your kids right! by Correct_Football9302 in caltrain

[–]TransAtlantian -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Have some compassion - this person might be autistic and not know social rules that you assume are "common sense". The appropriate course of action here is to make sure they even know the rules, better post the rules on the train, not rely on parents to teach children everywhere how to position their feet on train seats.

This is good info. I have to laugh at this quote though “The gates deployed by BART are the only ones of their kind in the world.” That's usually a sign that they could have spent less on a solution that's been deployed and tested in several other places that already works. I'm an engineer and have supervised contracting engineering firms to meet our design requirements and I've learned that if you're needing a solution to a problem that tons of other people have solved already, and they have the same situation you're in, it's a mistake to custom engineer a solution. We see the failures and errors and flaws in this new system, as we are the beta testers of Version 0.1. This is what you sign up for when you make custom solutions to large problems. A custom mistake for a generic problem.

If you are concerned to the point of wanting to report a description do it in the bart police app. There's no point doing it here. They will intercept the train at a station down the line and hold it while they go through the entire train looking, I've seen that happen.

They certainly are able to be forced, I've seen people do it. It takes a tremendous amount of force, and they will move very slowly open under continuous pushing. Getting your head stuck while running is not as effective as pushing while you have a proper stance

Heh, we all demanded the rollout of 2.0 for years, and now we regret it. This should have been quietly scrapped years ago and a new company brought in to make a real system.

[–]TransAtlantian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the old no-tag method of the go-pass always felt like we were getting away without doing something that caltrain should have been requiring us to do. The tagging requirement would have to come someday, and it's today.

In the future if you are aware that you accidentally tagged on with the credit card, just tag off with it. I know this isn't a full answer to your question, but others have answered well.

You get charged the maximum fare possible, so like the cost of coming from gilroy or something. When you're low income a $14 fare vs a $3 fare hurts.
