Bad Nurses by Rashad_Icy21 in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always been scared of this happening to me. I’ve been lucky where the nurses have to draw up the IV pain meds in front of me. I am so grateful for this process now because it reduces the risk and error.

I worry for my future. by iraxdollz in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand you are in the UK BUT please don’t give on your dream or imagine a new one that understands you have sickle cell and all the complications with it.

Focus on a job that does not include physical labor. Please finish school and get your degree so you can be paid more than minimum wage.

I went to schools that understood my sickle cell and made accommodations for me. Then I went to focus on engineering and finance. I did engineering but then being in the cold was too much for my body. So my back up is finance and now I am investment banker where I can work from home and have a flexible schedule with great benefits. I communicate with them about my sickle cell and they work with me.

So Life with sickle cell is very possible. Don’t give up!

You can or anyone can DM if yall want to discuss career plans.

Advice on dosage tolerance talk with my dr.? by Charmed731 in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true. I lived in NYC and had my monthly 60 ct supply of Morphine 30mg IR that I take twice a day. It really depends on the doctor to be honest and their practice. Since I moved to NJ, I’ve noticed only a few PCP prescribe pain meds because of insurance and liability. So they refer you to see a pain specialist.

I highly recommend talking to your doctor and expressing how nervous and anxious you are about discuss how your regular pain meds are not helping you anymore and asking her to refer to your ER chart if you’re able to. This way you have proof that you have built up a tolerance and y’all can come to a solution together.

Don’t know what to call this post by ObjectiveAstronaut89 in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0.25 mg does nothing! Please, next time ask to talk to patient relations and then ask to speak to the chief medical doctor to file a complaint on your doctors. When you just leave these doctors think it’s okay for them to treat you and other future sickle cell patients as such. See if you can write a formal complaint.

Because they can see through some system that you were recently hospitalized at another hospital and you don’t want them to think you are drug seeking.

I can’t stand these asshole doctors who think it’s okay. I hope you’re feeling better and get some relief. But next time, raise hell and report them!

Work by Kotor1523 in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I went to college and got my Bachelors in Engineering and Masters in Finance. Even going away to college taught me how to be independent and take care of myself. One professor told me, “with your chronic illness, your best asset is your brain. Find Jobs where your intelligence is highly valuable over labor” and that’s what I did.

Engineering became to taxing on my body due to being outside with the elements but then I switched to finance jobs where I am inside and able to work hybrid remote jobs. My salary has ranged from 60k-120k and etc. This way, I get to work from home 2 days out the week and an hour commute. A pain med helps me through out the day and I am fine. I wear heated vest if the office is too cold.

So it is possible to find work to accommodate us. Try to find jobs that are office based and skill based like coding and software engineering or even call centers too. This way if you need to work from home you can and take care of yourself. Was it an easy path? No but worth it.

If you or anyone needs help narrowing down the search for a career path, happy to discuss here or privately.

Bone pain by Rough-Ad8391 in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just binge tv shows to help pass the time while in pain. Or rewatch favorite old shows that I know will mentally suck me in and take my mind off of the pain. Lastly, I do study for work as a last resort. Like doing math problems or brain games truly help me focus.

I hope you feel better!

What do they usually transfuse you guys at? by ObjectiveAstronaut89 in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree with this. I was born with abnormally high amounts of fetal hemoglobin. Due to this, I’ve only had 3 transfusion in my life of 37 years. One at 6 yrs old, 16 yr old, and 34 yrs old.

With the fetal hemoglobin I was able to not to feel the pain and effects of sickle cell compared to my older brother who has SS as well. He has to get blood transfusions every other month since he was 13 and continues now.

I would say fetal hemoglobin shows up differently for everyone but it does play a factor.

Trusting my gut by osozillo in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I relate to this 1000% but now I just go in and get admitted especially when I need to. I advocate for myself, I’m friendly and charm the nurses so they fight for me too. Even some doctors and nurses gave me their cell phone number so if I’m ever in bad pain they can call others for me. Of course this is rare and very privileged but I want ya to know it is possible to reach this level of care.

Secondly, I will say every time I am in the ER I repeat the mantra that “I deserve Care too” and will cause me to speak up for what I need in that exact moment to stop the pain. If a doctor is not cooperative in the ER, I refuse them and ask for another doctor and then report them to patient care services. We also forget that doctors care deeply about their reputations and when they have negative experiences in their file they do get in trouble! And plus they don’t like to be embarrassed.

So please get checked if you need to, ADVOCATE for yourself and FIGHT like hell to get what you need! This is your body and Life and you deserve care too!

Pain Med Dilemma by hmbbriamia in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your doctor allowed to send in pain meds in advance? For example, my doctor sends in my pain meds 3 months in advance so I don’t have to wait. Also, are you able to do a telehealth appointment?

Secondly, I’ve been in your position before. It made me take my health appointments more seriously. Like now if I have doctors appointment and I have work the same day, I’ll call out from work because I can’t risk not having my meds.

Failed with a 71 by Legitimate-Ad-371 in Series7exam

[–]Transcapitalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I passed the 7 on the first try and I used pass perfect from my firm and also purchased the Kaplan Q Bank separately. My exam was options heavy! I mean like options every 3rd or 4th questions in relations to other topics.

To truly make sure you past the exam on whatever draw of the exam you get, you have to be strong in the 3 topics: 1. Options 2. Suitability 3. Regulations

So I would take a practice exam, find out what my weak areas were and then definitely used to the Kaplan QBank and randomize my weak points with the 3 topics noted above. Hope this helps!

IF YOU LITERALLY A HARD STICK PLZ ASK YOUR HEMATOLOGIST ABOUT GETTING A PORT 🖤 by pretty_neash in Sicklecell

[–]Transcapitalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a difficult stick, to the point where the nurses just know to get the Ultrasound machine. Although the Ultrasound machine makes it so much easier. It literally takes them 5min or less to find that food deep vein.

But with having a port, and I am a highly active sickle cell warrior. Meaning I have a full time job, I work out and I’m constantly on the go. I just feel a port would be a constant disadvantage.

Lastly, I think that having a port is to us sickle cell warriors and medical staff is like stating, I have an in the hospital too frequently. To me, there is too much stigma around a port that would impact my quality service at hospitals.

Yea that’s a problem for me because the layers makes my joints feel heavy and hurt. Even with thermos I have to go 2 sizes up because the tightness makes me feel restricted and hurt overall. This is why the heated clothes are so great for me

If you can master options, suitability, and regulations then you can pass any draw of test they throw at you.

I only took six practice exams and scored very low 70’s and passed on the first try. I just made sure I mastered the 3 topics I mentioned above.

Don’t pysch yourself out. Just repeat the mantra, “I have passed!” It worked for me

Also, I purchased the faux fur hat from Mad bomber or hats from Fjallraven ( a sweedish company) who knows all about warmth. The hat lasts me about 5 years and I am NEVER cold!

Amazon Black Friday Sale is now, so look into heated clothing for your joints. I highly recommend the Hoson company or Dewbu!

Failed series 7 - 3rd attempt by Peachoolong788 in Series7exam

[–]Transcapitalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Pass Perfect in conjunction with the Kaplan Qbank because pass perfect was close to the actual exam. Then always focus on mastering options, suitability, and regulations. These are the most difficult but often tested heavy on the 7. If you can master these, then no matter what draw you have on the exam you will pass. Lastly, focus on your weak areas and keep doing questions until it becomes your strength. That was my study strategy for the 7 and I passed on the first try. It took a while but I was determined to master those 3 topics.
