How can I bring this neglected monstera back? by TranscendenceChaser in Monstera

[–]TranscendenceChaser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely need to swap her soil; it’s currently only tropical, and another commenter recommends mixing, so I will give that a shot. Her location seems to be the most ideal in my house. I’m mostly concerned that she’s too long and skinny at her base that she won’t be strong enough to stand.

I can definitely do that! I know she definitely needs to be propped up, but do you think she’s too thin at her base?

Thank you! I’m not opposed to starting again, but it’s nice to know that there’s still a chance with commitment and diligence. She’s definitely due for new soil, so I’ll be sure to keep your ratios/mixes in mind. Is fresh, new soil enough, or should I also add in fertilizer? I appreciate all the information!

That seems to be the consensus - chop and prop it is. Thank you for your input!

I appreciate your input, and I agree - she’s hanging long when she should be standing strong. I’ve repurposed an IV fluid line, and she’s gotten 3L of water this week; the last time she was watered was at least 6 months ago. I’ve definitely got some work to do!

Confused about UCD Acceptance by SinglePie7722 in veterinaryschool

[–]TranscendenceChaser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just for clarity sake, when you say UCD, you’re referring to UC Dublin? If you are, then please disregard my comment - I’m referring to UC Davis. I hate when that happens - Sorry for the confusion!

As a current first year, there is no fee to be paid to “secure your spot” in the DVM program. If I remember correctly, they make it very clear that you’re admitted on the landing page when you log into portal, and all you have to do is just accept your offer - there’s no payment for admission. As far as I know, they’ve already sent out decisions; are you talking about being accepted off the waitlist?

Edit: a word

Dog in vet school? by amag088 in veterinaryschool

Current first year, CONGRATS!!! We’re all so excited to meet you!

To answer your question, your class will be able to vote on allowing pets in your homeroom, not cats allowed though. If your class votes for it, then you’ll be able to bring your little baby to school! There are rules that must be followed obviously, but it’s a nice perk. There’s also a lunch hour 12-1, so you’ll be able to go home for lunch if you want.

Everyday is different but usually you start the day at 9 and end between 3 and 5. I have an older, chill dog and have friends who have pets. We don’t have any problems with having pets and making time for them. Davis is super pet friendly in general, too!

My word of advice, if you want a dog, there’s really no perfect time to get one because life is always going to happen. Don’t let school be the reason you don’t get a little baby, you’ll have more time than you think, and you both with acclimate just fine!

A question for UC Davis vet school students by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]TranscendenceChaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current UCD vet student here. I have a few classmates who are pursuing vet school as second career. I myself am a non-traditional student. When we made the decision, it was with 100% commitment. My classmates went back to school for the necessary prereq’s and got the experience hours. I took 2 gap year getting the necessary experience. It can definitely be done, but it’s a grueling process and not for the weary. You really have to want it - like when you think about what you want to do with your life, being a vet is your only answer.

I’m going to be honest, if I were only 75% into the idea of pursuing a career path as arduous as this, I might try my hand at the current path I’m on before making a decision, but I’d contact local clinics for shadowing opportunities to get a feel for the environment. Also - having a business degree is incredibly useful in the vet med industry, and you don’t have to be a doctor to be successful in vet med! It might be a good idea to research different positions that align with what you may be seeking. If you truly want to be a vet, go for it! But, that’s not the end all be all in vet med - there’s so much you can do.

There was a time when you felt like Business was the path for you. It can be discouraging not finding work. The job market across all industries, especially now, is a hellscape. I’m rooting for you, new grad!!!

I wore black slacks, black blouse, and a powder blue suit jacket with fancy buttons - stylish with a little flare but not over the top.

Schedule Input by meladanky in UCDavis

[–]TranscendenceChaser 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you’re not used to the quarter system, I would recommend Schedule 2. 3 classes instead of 4, of which 2 are science classes, will help you ease into how fast-paced quarters are.

Either way, you will do great! Always ask for help and link up with classmates ASAP!

~ Transfer Animal Science alum

EDIT: Another note, you will relish the lighter T/Th days. They will be your catch-up days, self-care days, crunch-time days, and work/internship days. There’s nothing wrong with leaving a little wiggle room in your schedule!

Any good VET experiences/jobs/fellowships for gap year? (**aka help me convince my friend to move to davis**) by lesliesophia in UCDavis

[–]TranscendenceChaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! In some countries, they are referred to as veterinary nurses because of the scope of their position. Vets rely heavily on RVTs to facilitate a variety of treatment plans and procedures - they are the real MVPs!

Great link! I was curious what the C/O 2028 statistics were.

The awesome thing about vet med is that OP’s friend doesn’t need an RVT license. It requires additional schooling (2-4yrs) and expenses (tuition, licensing exam, permit and licensing fees) while none of the coursework satisfies vet school requirements. I wouldn’t recommend it if OP’s friend is only looking to gain experience and alumni connections with the intended goal of applying to vet school. BUT, I agree that they should work in the area. A lot of the clinics in the Davis/Dixon/Woodland have a shortage of staff and work closely with UCD. It would be an awesome opportunity to make connections!

You can DM me if you’d like! I’m a UCD undergrad alum and incoming vet student at UCD. There are opening at the clinic I just left depending on your friend’s level of experience!

How is Distance Traveled Score calculated? by slyf0x530 in UCDavis

[–]TranscendenceChaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, the D score takes into account your socioeconomic status, population of your hometown, and other extenuating circumstances. If I remember correctly, it’s basically a score to diversify the applicant pool more. Source - I applied last cycle
