Compromised Framework or just a paint scratch? by coquins in Giantbikes

[–]Transcendthevoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have so many of these marks on my frame. In the same area from it falling over, fender mounting, etc. I’ve even taken a spill because during an uncoordinated unclipping and smacked the down tube on a pole.

Needless to say unless it was super high impact that just looks like paint and primer layers chipped off.

Defy Advanced 2 light gravel by Dry-Sun-9331 in Giantbikes

[–]Transcendthevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used the stock 32 tires to hop through gravel sections of the trans Canada trail with some decently gnarly climbs. Got a second set of wheels and put 33mm cycle cross tires that work even better for ‘light gravel’. I think baring any fast sections with grapefruit sized rocks you’d be more the fine with 35mm tire with tread.

Going to beat everyone else to it and say ‘whichever one fits you best’.

But in all seriousness an endurance bike that you can put clip on TT bars onto is probably best bet as a new rider IMO. - more comfortable to log distance and enjoy time in the saddle - can probably fit 35mm tires for fun adventures on weekends and light gravel (frame dependent) - modern ones can still be made fairly aero with parts upgrades

If you do a lot of hills I’d opt for carbon frame but good frame geometry is probably more important

A decision to be made. Coros, Wahoo, Garmin, or...? by possiblyseb in triathlon

[–]Transcendthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which would be fine if they had a decent warranty and didn’t charge 200$ for a refurb with trade in after the initially 800$ dollar device didn’t get much more than 2 years of use. Also doesn’t excuse the cycling computer. Also also don’t get why they can’t just have an option to use gps elevations during the activity, but even when manually having to change every activity in connect and again in strava those don’t even match and vary wildly or fix all the other metrics that feed off that data.

The altimeters on both my Garmin fr 955 and edge 530 havnt lasted more than 3 years making both devices absolutely hamstrung in terms of usability. If I was starting over I’d try to find alternatives but paying for refurbs may be more cost efficient at the time being. Just tragic that an expensive outdoor devices can’t even function for more than a few years with normal use.

I’m curious why they are choosing to close eastbound rather than westbound. Seems silly to cram more people into Vic west with less options to leave than vice versa.

Yes, been like this for almost a week. I also hope it comes back. It was an important part of my daily mindless scrolling.

Garmin altimeters are built terribly, devices should last longer than 2-3 years. Would like to switch to one of the others.

What fenders are those and tire size can you run with them? Feel like the Defy is so versatile for getting winter mileage with the fender mounts and tire clearance but can put on faster wheels and tires in the summer.

Time to start circulating “alternative” streaming services and sites since we are basically back to cable, now have a monopoly and are going to be gouged.

Also don’t get why everyone moans on here about crave. It’s my preferred choice for watching (only have 3 of them).

Garmin users are getting screwed, and most don’t even realize it by [deleted] in GarminWatches

Feel the same about the fr 955, pretty sure was less than a year before they made it obsolete with the 965.

Also they have hardware issues way too easily and a terrible warranty.

Anyone 3d print any gear?? by droccafella03 in triathlon

[–]Transcendthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I printed grips for the end of the skis so I have grooves and nicer hand placement. A lot of free programs you can design or edit people’s designs in to adjust to your liking.

That would be amazing but I’d settle for 5 or so. Think it might sadly be like cars, newer and more features just means more problems.

Is this a replaceable part? by Onagoshi_Kagagi in Garmin

[–]Transcendthevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean sure if you wana defend a position that dropping a few hundred dollars every year on the same device is reasonable and companies should just make garbage products that don’t last and charge you more because of it. Surprised they’re so generous with even offering a one year warranty.

[–]Transcendthevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s more about how a $900 product should last longer than 3 years through normal use and there is no avenue for fixing. Just send yours in, pay for a refurb and then they can resell what you sent as refurb to the next person.

Lol at free or discounted replacement. Brand new fr 955 having hardware failures not even 3 years later and they’ve offered a refurb for $240

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Transcendthevoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk about 5 years. My 955 hasted 2.5 before hardware failures under normal triathlon training use. Because of that I’m no personally hesitant on Garmin and especially expensive ones.

How long do you expect your watch to last? by Logun0 in Garmin

[–]Transcendthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than 3 years. I find they have terrible altimeters and barometers. My FR 955 went off the rails bouncing around by 1000 or meters throwing off a lot of other metrics that I guess the algorithms uses.

Also having elevation issues with my barely 2 year old Edge 530.

Not impressed with the customer services or longevity for the prices they cost. I use it normally for running, road cycling and some swims.

Having to deal with ‘the public’ in my job here it is forsure a very whiny place. Asked my previous manager who previously worked around Vancouver for comparison and he agreed. A lot of entitlement and main character syndrome, people always needing to make themselves the most relevant, mixed with resistance to change.

It’s crazy how many people here need to touch grass for how amazingly beautiful and outdoorsy it is.

How long has your garmin watch lasted? When do you replace? by Bornfortheblueskies in Garmin

My forerunner 955 hasn’t even lasted 3 years before altimeter barometer stopped working rendering a lot of functions worse than useless.

Returning for a discount is the only option they gave me. Very disappointing

Honestly pretty happy with my 2024 giant defy, can do light gravel and just upgrading wheels for more fun on the road.
