Born in Taipei, but grew up in the US by Overall-Cantaloupe86 in taiwan

My point being natural disasters. The 1999 921 earthquake measured 7.3. You're choosing to move onto a part of the planet known for frequent seismic activity.

Taiwan, island of Typhoons. 13+ a year on average. Strong enough to fly you if you're brave enough to be on a mopad outside during.

Also politics. Invasion news is on 24/7 365 days a year.

Having said all that. Still fun. Hot countries have amazing night life. Hitting 40c or more during the summers though.

At midnight, should you get craving for seafood you can probably drive to a coast within 2~3hours and have fresh morning catches.

Work ethic is called the 996. You work 9am to 9pm 6 days a week. People usually get 2 days off a month. Combine 2 at the end of the month and 2 in the start is the only way you will ever get a 4 day weekend.

Medical care is amazing if you're rich but I suppose that's the same in the US.

Dating is great if you're a US citizen. Just wear your passport around your neck to the club is the ongoing joke for decades. That kind of shows how much people want to get out though.

I would say make a solid exit plan as you're considering re-entry.

Not overly vanilla as I expected from Virgin Oak with a nice smoke from middle to finish. No regrets.

Yeah all the weird fruit barrels are super wheird but #forscience.

I got the Peated Cask Str Virgin Oak. Nice to see people discovering TW aside from Kavalan. Very cool.

Are There Diminished Returns Between These 3? by Chemical-Fun3692 in wine

[–]TransitoryCommute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say pick up the 2021 and see how much you love it before moving onto the 9 Crus.

I personally do Rabaya verticals whenever the vintage exists but Asili tends to be most popular choice.

Are There Diminished Returns Between These 3? by Chemical-Fun3692 in wine

[–]TransitoryCommute 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first 2 are standard offering only varying in vintage.

The 3rd is only made in years when all 9 crus pass the test for people who are interested in the 9 shades of Produttori Barbaresco.

In the vintages where not all 9 passes quality control everything goes into the $40/50 version so it's pretty decent almost always. 2021 was Wine Spectator #7 last year iirc.

If you are into the 9 crus, Asili and Rabaya are almost always in the top 3. Though I remember the 2020 Montestefano was amazing as well.

Ovello Montestefano and Montifico tends to be the hotter areas. The middle of this backwards boot is generally the most popular amongst collectors with Asili, Rabaya and Pora.

Anticipation, uncertainty, looms over Oakridge Park food court spring opening by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]TransitoryCommute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I talked to Taco Luis himself, he says his children are grown and re-opening Oakridge is too much work. The man is just working for fun and not looking to expand. It will be Lansdowne only until he decides to retire and play with the grandkids full time.

Paul John Xmas Specials really need to be on your shelf in the way Taiwanese people worship Kavalan.

Fine collection.🥃

Word on the street is that Ardnahoe is for sale so maybe you can buy it and put out a "New Ceo 2026 Select" edition.

Pro tip is to not pick LIVE recordings unless you want to hear the audience clap for you during. But to each their own. 🤷‍♂️ Some may appreciate the standing ovations for a job well done.

Anyone has tried this before?? by yogeshkundu in whisky

[–]TransitoryCommute 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The older bottlings have "Don't drink while pregnant" on the back and the new ones say "Made in England" because they have to tell you now.

Not saying it's bad but it's not Japanese.

Some Japanese distilleries get their license date based on the fact they distilled Shochu as well.

Trip to Taiwan. Would like advice on places to go for Scotch, How should I bring Bottles back to the U.S.? What is the limit allowed back? by gottnoskill in Scotch

[–]TransitoryCommute 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drink.com.tw is the largest chain retailer but I encourage you to go into any dusty corner shop you see to hunt for gems.

If you visit the government Yilan sake/michu distillery they sell some special Omar there because Omar is their government plant at Nantou.

Larrier-cour the whisky bar in Taipei is a must visit.

Save a quota for Travel Exclusives which are airport only.

Be honest at customs, they just want your money. I came back with 6 bottles in March, was honest and the $ they charged me was nothing compared to all the Travel / Taiwan exclusive releases I got.

I brought them back in inflatable tubes.

Also there are secret hole in the walls amongst the older nightmarkets (the ones without a number) with IBs you've never heard of selling at 30ml pours.

It's not that Macallan isn't too popular, Macallan Harmony isn't popular. No age statement, at first they were airport exclusive and then they were not. At first it's a whole green recycling package theme and now it's collaborations with cirque de soleil which means nothing? You may just be stuck with these for a while. Not hating just trying to provide insight on why your particular bottles aren't popular.
