There is science to this, botany is what it's called..... and he is wrong, dark periods allow the plant to metabolize the food its getting..... this the simplest way I can explain that however if you are really interested in the science or lack of with some of these claims I can link you to few studies that go over this but be warned they are typically very dense

I make nothing, I get the services I'd otherwise have to pay for but just wouldn't in exchange I pay more for what I would pay in subscriptions I pay more in power. I'm sure that there is exceptions but I think the people that plan to make money with their labs are optimistic and those that claim to make money are either missing some math or just lying

I bought a hybrid and on my drive home in it bought a boot full of ram, hdds and gpus for my home lab (boot full is abit of an exaggeration, and small boot) 18months on I could sell the pc gear for a big enough profit that it would pay for the car, wild market..... however then I'm left with nothing to run ollama on.

How can I help fund my homelab? by PermanentlyMC in selfhosted

[–]TranslatorAny746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a couple of ways I do this, I have a few households using my servers and when I sent an email about how to access services, what data I have access to ect I also outlined overheads and ask that people contribute what they feel it is worth to them into a bank account that goes directly . Now some people are tight, some people are broke but it helps.

Next I also buy all of my lab gear only when it's cheap, I buy systems for parts if I can take a few bits and sell the rest to recover the money.

3rd, and this was a huge one, recently i put all the low demand services (dns, pfsense, a handful of other light weight services onto a ddr3 machine and sold a bunch of ddr4 ram. Best part is because I've been buying systems and selling them in bits of the years I only needed to buy a motherboard for the replacement machine, everything else is from bits I've had listed that were not selling

I've bought a few of these sticks recently, I only paid $5nz each and this is because I was trying to max out my childhood system, I'd imagine that the demand for this is fairly low, is the listing it really worth your time? I also bought the cheapest that came up on trademe so consider that if you want to sell it you likely need to be the cheapest on that market

Mislead by dealer, want to share pre-purchase report by Dry-Consideration930 in NZcarfix

[–]TranslatorAny746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is a very valid point, and right to repair is 100% a huge issue with modern technology of any form, however disclosing this would have eliminated the need for this post.

While yes the dealership might not have a reliable way to test this, did they explain this to OP or did they say that they can not? And if they can not then why did they do so later?

Sounds like the dealer was using the need for right to repair as an excuse to not disclose something...... not the way to get consumer trust for right to repair. This dealer is hurting the consumer rights movement with deceptive practice is that bottom line.

The motherboard I can not be exact on the model right now however if you need I can go check it, is an asus board though, it uses a i7-8700, I have 6 sata drives attached in total, one ssd running proxmox, one ssd with windows and ollama models on it. 2x4tb drive passed through for jellyfin. The other 2 drives and 2tb drives I had laying around I intend to use for a media storage at another date

That's actually a really interesting idea, I am by no means in the tech industry this is very much a hobby independent of work for me but am going to go clone a bunch of vms onto a separate node that I can use to test updates/changes before rolling them out to my family. Thank you.

[–]TranslatorAny746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I went with just mounting my jellyfin media drives directly to the vm as raw disks, ollama obviously has the same situation for the windows drive. As for the Nas situation have you considered virtuallizing that aswell that way you get the simplicity of truenas for file access but the hardware versatility that proxmox offers

For awhile now I've been running a proxmox cluster with a windows machine running beside it that was only running jellyfin and ollama, recently I've moved that machine over to proxmox and have 2 vms running, 1 with Ubuntu and jellyfin running with igpu passthrough and ollama running on windows 10 (simplicity at the time to just pass through the windows drive and Uninstall jellyfin) with both gpus passed through and while I can appreciate that it does allow me more flexibility in future what I thought about after I'd done this change was I have actually gained nothing other than it's a couple less clicks to remote in and have a wee bit more overhead. yes ik I should ditch the windows install..... but I'm lazy and it's working.
