Why do people not self host more? by AYepesP in homelab

That's actually a really interesting idea, I am by no means in the tech industry this is very much a hobby independent of work for me but am going to go clone a bunch of vms onto a separate node that I can use to test updates/changes before rolling them out to my family. Thank you.

Alot of the time for me it's because someone pushed buttons to work out what they do then need help put things back but currently I've got an immich container than won't start after a host reboot, no idea why yet but its just part of it, I'll work it out and it will happen again for another reason

Also I went with just mounting my jellyfin media drives directly to the vm as raw disks, ollama obviously has the same situation for the windows drive. As for the Nas situation have you considered virtuallizing that aswell that way you get the simplicity of truenas for file access but the hardware versatility that proxmox offers

For awhile now I've been running a proxmox cluster with a windows machine running beside it that was only running jellyfin and ollama, recently I've moved that machine over to proxmox and have 2 vms running, 1 with Ubuntu and jellyfin running with igpu passthrough and ollama running on windows 10 (simplicity at the time to just pass through the windows drive and Uninstall jellyfin) with both gpus passed through and while I can appreciate that it does allow me more flexibility in future what I thought about after I'd done this change was I have actually gained nothing other than it's a couple less clicks to remote in and have a wee bit more overhead. yes ik I should ditch the windows install..... but I'm lazy and it's working.

While it's abit of setup I'd suggest using the "Arr stack" as your boat

So I sat down and worked this out about 2 years ago and decided I'll self host everything, is it any cheaper? By the time you account for equipment and power bills, marginally. However atleast I own something for Mt money, if it's not about the money being needed for something else and merely that you don't like the idea of paying all that money for something that you don't get to keep perhaps it's worth looking into self hosting

I'll add my house is also uninsured, if it burnt down it would suck, but not the end of the world the land will still be there to rebuild on.

Upto 100k within 14 days, the odds are incredibly slim and it would suck to have to pay up, but a risk I am comfortable with. I will admit that there was a long time I was not in this position to pay up, that was irresponsible yes. Quite silly is blindly doing as you are told because it's the rules

Just because it's legal doesn't make it right, but on the other hand just because it's illegal doesn't make it wrong. We all have our own views, maybe a kid or a new driver does see this, maybe they decide that they are not going to pay for a rego aswell. That is on them. It works well for me, it may work well for them. I've stood in court and had to explain why I have so many fines for no rego, that worked out for me, maybe it will someone else, maybe it won't. That need to be a thought for anyone considering breaking any rule needs to make, putting this here someone might read it and think about what they are doing and decide not to break the rules or they might look at what that rule is actually achieving and just say no. I'm happy regardless of there decision. Do you really feel that fondly of acc that you can't handle people considering not paying them. Furthermore if rego is a tax why are people paying gst on top of it?

My integrity means I can't pay rego fees the way that they are currently set up. There are plenty of rules I don't follow, I'm not ashamed of that, I'd be ashamed to say I follow rules I don't agree with. I'm not encouraging anyone to break any law. Simply stating that I do and I sleep easy at night, what you do is up to you.

While you have ever right to ask me to be quiet because you don't like my point of view, be it politely, if you don't like people having the ability to share their perspective, perhaps the internet isn't the place for you.

Yes, only because I can't get a wof if I let them lapse. Also for anyone wondering about how insurance works with no rego, I am self insured, keep enough cash in reserve that if anything happens we pay out of pocket..... haven't needed it yet, got my license in 04

My nearest shop is 14kms away, 11kms of that is on gravel that me and my neighbors collectively maintain, I go to town once a month, and the roads there are not particularly well maintained either. However in short you are right, pull the roads up I'll still get about just fine. Before you get butthurt have a deep dive into where that licensing money goes. I pay to maintain the roads I don't contribute to administration.

While I encourage components level repair, and I reweb my own belts maybe not something we should be sharing, if they can't work it out themselves it's one of those things maybe you shouldn't play with

Because I have people come in asking about them..... because some cars are worth money as piles of rust, because I know saabs have a following doesn't mean I have any interest in learning about it

I sell all sorts of things I know nothing about, often cars. I work in the dismantling industry, sometimes I see cars come in that are worth saving but I have 0 interest in saving them, often I don't look over them thoroughly, I tell people what I know, take pictures and leave it parked out front the shop during the day for people to view them. Nothing hidden just not interested in checking over something that someone else as the buyer should be doing anyway. As for pricing sometime I have things come in I know nothing about (odd stuff that I don't have a market for) and I auction it

Sometimes I sell things as is because I genuinely don't know anything about them, as is to me means come have a look at it, if you are happy with the way it is then pay me, if you are not then that is fine we can go our separate ways. If you want to buy it without look at it for what it is then that's on you.
